This year's World Mental Health Day theme is "Mental Health at Work" 💪 ⛑️ 👨💻 In Singapore's fast-paced work environment, where work-life integration is the norm, it's easy to overlook our well-being. Stress can be beneficial in the short term by driving us to reach our goals, but chronic and overwhelming stress can lead to burnout, affecting both personal health and job performance. 🤕 Prioritising mental health in the workplace is not only crucial for employees' well-being, but it also helps organisations save on annual medical costs. Dr. Pearlene Ng, Deputy Programme Director & Education Director (Psychology) of NUS Yeo Boon Khim Mind Science Centre, shares insights on recognising signs of burnout, its causes, and practical tips on building resilience, setting boundaries, and promoting a supportive workplace culture. #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealthAtWork #PreventBurnout #BuildResilience #WorkLifeBalance

Presenteeism happens when employees attend work when they are not in good health. And according to research by the CIPD, it costs organisations more than absenteeism each year. A study by RAND Europe found that 50% of workers have at least one stress-related condition, underlining the importance of focusing on employee well-being. Minds That Work can support you to develop, or update, your well-being strategy, based on World Mental Health recommendations. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/dCnJz7kQ

As #healthcare professionals, you dedicate your lives to caring for others. But in the face of demanding schedules, high-pressure situations, and emotional burdens, it's easy to neglect your own mental health. Remember, taking care of yourself is not selfish; it's essential for providing the best possible care to your patients. Unique Challenges Faced by Healthcare Professionals ● Compassion Fatigue: Witnessing pain and suffering daily can take an emotional toll. ● Burnout: Long hours, demanding workloads, and emotional exhaustion can lead to burnout. ● Moral Distress: Difficult ethical decisions and witnessing futile care can cause moral distress. ● Vicarious Trauma: Hearing about or witnessing traumatic events can lead to vicarious trauma. ● Isolation: Shift work and irregular schedules can make it difficult to maintain social connections. Recognizing the Signs It's important to be aware of the signs of mental distress, which can manifest physically, emotionally, and behaviorally. ● Physical: Fatigue, insomnia, headaches, stomachaches ● Emotional: Anxiety, irritability, sadness, anger ● Behavioral: Increased substance use, social withdrawal, difficulty concentrating Self-Care Strategies Tailored for Healthcare Professionals ● Practice mindfulness to stay present and grounded. Meditation can help reduce stress and improve focus. ● Connect with colleagues who understand the unique challenges you face. Share experiences, offer support, and learn coping strategies. ● Regularly discuss challenging cases with a supervisor or mentor to gain perspective and emotional support. ● Engage in activities that bring you joy and allow for self-expression, such as art, music, or writing. ● Regular exercise releases endorphins, improves mood, and reduces stress. ● Nourish your body with balanced meals and snacks to maintain energy levels and support emotional well-being. ● Prioritize sleep by establishing a relaxing bedtime routine and ensuring a comfortable sleep environment. ● If you're struggling with persistent or overwhelming emotional distress, don't hesitate to seek help from a mental health professional. Therapy can provide valuable support and coping tools. Remember, your mental health is as important as your physical health. By prioritizing your well-being, you'll be better equipped to provide compassionate care to your patients and lead a fulfilling life both inside and outside of work. #Pharmatech #MentalHealth #MedicalandHealth

🎴 Did you know that last year, 23% of workers took time off due to mental health challenges? This month, we published our new 'Mind Health' report, commissioned by the AXA group and conducted with Ipsos, because the mental health of our employees is an important focus: “At AXA, our priority is our people, demonstrated through programs such as We Care, which offers support to employees at various life stages and during critical moments," explains Patrick Cohen, CEO of European Markets and Global Health, Member of AXA’s Management Committee. "We then develop targeted plans, tutorials, and webinars to improve mental health awareness and practice, as well as offering dedicated trainings and coaching.” The report sheds light on the key findings to know: 1. Mind Health Issues are globally on the rise. 32% of the population is experiencing mind health conditions. 2. Young people are struggling. 39% of 18-24-year-olds are experiencing severe or extremely severe forms of anxiety, stress or depression. 3. The seriousness of mind health problems is underestimated, to the detriment of professional care. 40% of people with current mind health conditions are managing their disorder themselves. 4. Mind health: invisible at work? 3/4 of the working population experienced at least one mind health issue due to their work environment. 5. Companies are unaware of the real consequences. 70% are reporting acts of disengagement at work. As well as mapping out the landscape, the report touches on how to identify early signs of mind health challenges at work and how recognizing these signs is crucial for taking care of ourselves and each other. Women’s Health Week kicks off tomorrow! 🩷🎉🫶🧘📚☀️⭐️ In 2024, around 1 in 2 Australian women (54%) are currently experiencing some form of mental health issue. Worryingly, 1 in 4 women are dealing with a severe mental health issue. Given both the spread and severity of mental health problems for women, it is surprising that this doesn’t get more attention – and isn’t a key focus of women’s health week! For many women, we only reach out for help when things get dire - only 48% of who had experienced mental ill-health sought professional help. Women’s health week is a great opportunity to remind ourselves – and our family, friends, community and colleagues – of the importance of preventative health not only for our bodies but also our minds. With mental ill-health on the rise, what are some things we can do to boost our mental wellbeing? Here are 3 things you can do every day or every week – just make it a regular part of your rhythm – to boost your mental wellbeing. #womenshealthweek2024 #wellbeing #mentalhealth #meditation #mindfulness https://lnkd.in/gmVx39fR

Today is the last day of #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek , and I didn't want to let it pass without taking a moment to reflect on how my own Mental Health has shaped my personal and professional journey over the years. Time was I chose not to recognise my mental and emotional health. Friends, I can tell you that this is a strategy that is doomed to fail. For me, my brush with #burnout in 2017 was one such moment. Unhappily juggling a crushing workload as a GP, while at the same time trying to find a way to pursue my passion for healthtech, I sank into depression and anxiety and was forced to take time off to recover. With the support of my wife, friends, family, and my GP, I slowly found me way back and, with it, the courage to leave front-line clinical practice. Brushes with the brutal unpleasantness of depression tend to leave a mark, and for me this was a commitment to being open and honest about my own story, and finding ways to help others. Even if that help is a story of hope, that you can find yourself happy and fulfilled after such darkness, I'm glad to play my part. Of course, I'm passionate about technology, and how it can help address the yawning gap between the demand and supply of healthcare. I'm an advisor to Noetic who help support the neurodivergent community, who are disproportionately affected by mental illness. I also advise Flow Neuroscience, whose innovative headset uses electrical stimulation to effectively treat depression without drugs. I'd really love to hear of any new products that are taking huge strides in this area and changing the game. There is so much work to do in this area and so much impact that can be made - who do you think is really changing the conversation? #Depression #Anxiety #ADHD #Neurodiversity PS: I've written about my burnout and ADHD diagnosis many times, and spoken on numerous podcasts. It's a Sunday, and the sun is shining, but if you would like to know more here's something I did for Pluxee last year: https://lnkd.in/eWeNyPbv
