Mawani Reports 4.29% Increase in Handling Volumes for November 2024 Shipping Arabia, December 10, 2024 — The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) announced a 4.29% rise in handling volumes across its ports for November 2024, totaling 24,735,561 tons, an increase from 23,717,049 tons in November of the previous year. The month saw significant growth in exported containers, which surged by 23% to 261,030, up from 212,216 in November 2023. Imported containers also saw an uptick, rising by 15.62% to 259,355 from 224,324 last year. Breakdown of cargo types showed general cargo at 1,131,939 tons, solid bulk cargo at 3,598,925 tons, and liquid bulk at 13,057,383 tons. Despite these increases, livestock arrivals dipped by 4.98% to 716,541 from 754,124 heads during the same period last year. Total container throughput was 670,185, marking a 9.14% decrease from 737,628 containers last year. Transshipment containers experienced a sharp decline of 49.43%, down to 138,166 from 274,203 in 2023. Maritime traffic also decreased by 6.96%, with 949 vessels arriving compared to 1,020 in November 2023. Passenger numbers fell by 15.78% to 66,422 from 78,865, while vehicle imports showed a positive trend, rising by 11.82% to 99,760 from 89,214 in the previous year. In comparison to October 2024, Mawani achieved an 8.26% increase in handling volumes, totaling 27,012,128 tons, up from 24,951,573 tons in October 2023. Exported containers for October 2024 increased by 14% to 254,832 from 223,434, and imported containers grew by 10% to 248,216 from 226,514. Dry bulk goods followed, recording a 28.6% rise in handling, with about 2.7 million tons managed in August 2024, up from 2.1 million tons in August 2023. In terms of vessel traffic, there was a notable increase across all categories, with liquid bulk vessels showing the highest jump of 36.8%, totaling 52 vessels. Dry bulk vessels also saw a rise of 28.6%, and container vessel traffic grew by 13.5%. Overall, the Port of Alexandria experienced a 14.1% increase in total vessel traffic in August 2024 compared to the same month in the previous year, with a cumulative tally of 456 vessels. This score underscores the Kingdom's ongoing commitment to enhancing its maritime infrastructure and bolstering global trade connectivity. Throughout 2024, Mawani has continued to develop the infrastructure of the Kingdom's ports, significantly boosting their competitiveness on both regional and international stages. Notable developments include the completion of the Red Sea Gateway at the Northern Container Terminal of Jeddah Islamic Port, with investments totaling one billion Saudi Riyals. Additionally, the Northwestern Approach Channel at the port has been extensively dredged and now extends 3,000 meters in length, 300 meters in width, and 18.5 meters in depth, an increase from the previous 17 meters.
