On Wednesday, Nov. 13, Netflix announced that the action-thriller starring Gabriel Basso will be returning with its second season in January 2025. The streaming service unveiled the news alongside an action-packed teaser and new images teasing what's to come for the FBI agent working at the White House in Washington, D.C. Based on Matthew Quirk's 2019 novel of the same name, the series follows Peter Sutherland (Basso), who is a low-level FBI agent unexpectedly tasked with uncovering a mole in the U.S. government after learning of a vast conspiracy in season 1. Christopher Saunders/Netflix The Night Agent Season 2: All About the Thriller's Highly Anticipated Second Installment According to Netflix, Peter's "efforts to save the president in season 1 earn him an opportunity to become a night agent in Season 2. But working in the secretive organization of Night Action will propel Peter into a world where danger is everywhere and trust is in short supply." Per the teaser, "It takes a certain kind of person to succeed as a night agent." And based on the footage, it looks like Peter will be tested at every turn in the upcoming episodes led by showrunner Shawn Ryan. The new look at season 2 comes after Netflix teased that "danger" was afoot as it debuted first-look photos in October. The streamer also revealed that the series scored an early season 3 renewal, with production on those episodes set to begin in Istanbul in late 2024 and continue filming in New York in 2025. Christopher Saunders/Netflix All About 'The Night Agent' Star Gabriel Basso While speaking to PEOPLE about season 1, which first premiered in March 2023, Basso revealed what drew him to the politically-themed conspiracy and action thriller. "What made me want to do it was talking with Shawn and hearing how grounded he wanted to make it," he said at the time. Basso added, "I don't like when violence is sort of romanticized and made to be this, like, 'Oh, I'm smoldering through a punch.' So I'm glad that his vision for this show was really grimy." Considering the response to season 1, Basso's instincts were right. Following its debut, The Night Agent became "the most watched series in 2023 (by views)," according to Netflix, which also noted that it's the 7th most popular English-language series of all time, garnering 98.2 million views in 91 days.
