Chris Stapleton Will Spend the Fourth of July Performing for 40,000 Troops: 'I Can't Think of a More Appropriate Thing to Do'

Chris Stapleton is celebrating the Fourth of July by giving back in a big way.

The Grammy-winning country superstar will spend America’s birthday at North Carolina’s Fort Bragg, where he will perform for 40,000 members of the armed forces and their families. He will also be on hand to present Budweiser s $1 million donation to Folds of Honor, an organization that provides educational support to the spouses and children of fallen and disabled service members.

For Stapleton, the Budweiser-sponsored concert is the perfect way to spend the Fourth. “I can’t think of a more appropriate thing to do,” he told PEOPLE. “No one who lives in the United States of America doesn’t owe these guys a debt of gratitude. Anything we can do to honor them is a real treat to get to do.”

It’s far from the first working holiday for the 38-year-old musician. Last year he spent the July 4th weekend performing a series of dates in Texas with Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. “We had planned on taking this Fourth off, but then the opportunity to go celebrate the soldiers with Budweiser and Folds of Honor came up and it was just something we couldn’t say no to. So we decided to go celebrate these guys and girls. I’m honored to meet them.”

Despite the constant touring commitments following the global success of his 2015 album, Traveller, Stapleton is never far from his family. In fact, his wife is right beside him at every performance! Morgane Stapleton is a vocal powerhouse, and the duo share the spotlight – and heavenly harmonies – at each gig. Their two young children are also familiar faces on the tour.

“I feel really fortunate to get to do both things: play music on the road and do what I love for a living, but also get to have a family life,” he says. “Because you miss things. You try not to, but you’re gonna miss things being out here on the road, because that’s just the nature of the job. So when we can make those things not get missed, we always try to do that.”

As anyone who’s ever been on a long car trip knows, it’s not easy being cooped up with the same people. But for Stapleton, having his wife nearby is the ultimate blessing – most of the time. “We’re married like anybody else, so there are days where we’re going to disagree about something. Some days are better than others, but for the most part it’s a real treat.”
