Latinos Celebrate 'Despacito' Performance at Grammys

Luis Foni and Daddy Yankee's performance of "Despacito" at 60th Annual Grammy Awards had the Latino community on the Internet celebrating.

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee may not have walked away with an award for their smash hit “Despacito” at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards, but the two Puerto Rican artists stole the show when they gave a sensational performance of the Spanish-language track. Their presentation didn’t only get a standing ovation from the star-studded audience, but was wildly celebrated by Latino fans across social media.

During Fonsi and Yankee’s performance, Latinos rushed to Twitter to express their excitement at a Spanish-language song getting front and center attention at an iconic awards ceremony. “Feels so good to see @LuisFonsi & @daddy_yankee on that #Grammys stage. #LatinosStandUp #Despacito #PuertoRico,” one fan wrote.

Here’s a mix of some of the most enthused reactions:

For Luis Fonsi, pride for his Latin heritage and community was at the forefront of his mind before his memorable performance last night. “This is really big,” he told ET before hitting the stage. “Not only for me, but for Latin music in general, to be able to sing a song in Spanish for the big show. I’m really proud to be here…. So to be able to celebrate a little bit of who I am and where I’m from, and to share with the world, and break that language barrier.”

The Puerto Rican duo’s original rendition of their megahit brought the crowd of celebrities at the Grammys to their feet, including Chrissy Teigen, John Legend and Donnie Wahlberg. Stars like Mindy Kaling and fellow Puerto Rican Lin-Manuel Miranda, who weren’t present at the ceremony, showered the pair with love on Twitter. “This performance of Despacito was muy caliente,” Kaling wrote. Miranda wrote: “De…spa…ci…toooooo,” alongside a pic of the U.S. territory’s flag.
