Photo: Saturday Night Live Chappell Roan boasted all the glitz and glamour of a true Midwest Princess in an unforgettable performance on Saturday Night Live. The synth-pop star, 26, appeared as the musical guest in the sketch comedy show’s Nov. 2 episode, with comedian John Mulaney as the host. In a performance marked by elaborate, colourful and fun sets and costumes, Roan was introduced by Mulaney, 42, for her first song of the night, her hit track, “Pink Pony Club." Dressed in a glittering white, floor-length gown, the singer wore a voluminous red wig with silver streaks and bold eye makeup as she began the song sat on a throne-like chair. The set featured an altar-like structure draped in material and bows, as well as projections of pink ponies galloping on screen on the walls behind. Roan's band also wore equally striking sparkly outfits and bold wigs. For her second performance of the night, Roan debuted a new country-style track, "The Giver," and was again introduced by the night's host. The fun set featured plants, faux rock pillars and steps as well as trees projected on the walls, which were revealed when theater curtains raised after Roan began singing. Roan’s name last appeared on SNL in the Sept. 28 sketch by Bowen Yang, which commented on fame’s impact on Roan’s mental health and sparked controversy amongst fans. While some believed Yang, dressed as viral baby pigmy hippo Moo Deng, to be supporting Roan, others viewed the sketch as a mockery. "Leave her alone! Let her take as much time as she needs for her mental health. We both deserve patience and grace, so stop harassing her and stop throwing shellfish at her," Yang’s Moo Deng said. Yang clarified the next day that the sketch was in support of Roan. “If my personal stance and the piece aren't absolutely clear in terms of supporting then there it is I guess," Yang wrote in an Instagram story.
