Jolie Seeks Divorce from Thornton

It’s over between Academy Award winners Angelina Jolie and Billy Bob Thornton. On Wednesday, reports the Associated Press, she filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court, citing irreconcilable differences and seeking full custody of the couple’s 11-month-old son, Maddox, whom they adopted recently from Cambodia. A representative for Jolie, 26, declined comment. Thornton, 47, issued a statement saying only, “It’s a sad thing.” Since meeting on the set of the 1999 movie “Pushing Tin,” the couple has been the focus of endless media attention. They wed in Las Vegas in May of 2000 after a whirlwind courtship — he had been keeping company with actress Laura Dern at the time — and their post-marital antics (such as getting tattoos with each other’s names and wearing vials filled with each other’s blood) were widely reported, as were their frequent public displays of affection. This is Jolie’s second marriage and Thornton’s fifth. Apparently each will assume custody of their own Oscars: Jolie was named Best Supporting Actress for 1999’s “Girl, Interrupted”; Thornton won for Best Adapted Screenplay for 1996’s “Sling Blade.” Jolie, who serves as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations, has spent time in Thailand in recent months, filming the upcoming movie “Beyond Borders.” Thornton has been touring to support his CD, “Private Radio,” according to Reuters.
