The decision was made amicably and with mutual respect toward one another,” the couple told TMZ in a joint statement. “We will always remain great friends and devoted partners in raising our children.” Quaid, 62, married the blonde real estate agent, 45, in 2004. Three years later, they welcomed fraternal twins, Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace, via surrogate. Just two weeks after the twins (now 8) were born, they were accidentally given a massive overdose of the blood thinner Heparin and spent days battling for their lives. “It turned their blood to the consistency of water,” Quaid told PEOPLE eight years after the scare. “The danger would be rupturing an artery. And they were so small they couldn’t thrash around. I think that’s what saved them.” The children recovered, and the Quaids ended up reaching a $750,000 settlement against Cedars-Sinai Hospital in December 2008. All seemed well – until Buffington-Quaid filed for divorce in March 2012, citing that the marriage had “become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities.” RELATED VIDEO: What Did Dennis Quaid Buy After Earning His First Big Paycheck as an Actor? Two months later, a reconciliation seemed possible when she withdrew the papers. However, Buffington-Quaid filed for legal separation in October, and requested sole physical custody and joint legal custody of their two children. A few weeks later, Quaid responded by filing for divorce himself. He asked for joint legal and physical custody of the children and offered to pay spousal support to Kimberly. After many sightings together with their family, the couple reunited in spring of 2013, and divorce proceedings were dismissed by a judge. As recently as Christmas 2015, the two spent time in Hawaii with the twins and Quaid’s son from a previous marriage, Jack. The five were all smiles in a silly photo posted on Instagram. This was the third marriage for Quaid, who was divorced from Meg Ryan in 2001 and actress P.J. Soles in 1983. Close
