Ty Burrell & Julie Bowen Bask in Emmy Love

Now they have his and hers Emmys.

The Primetime Emmy Awards kept things modern Sunday night, awarding the first two trophies of the telecast, live from L.A.’s Nokia Theatre, to Modern Family stars Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell for their outstanding supporting roles on the ABC comedy as husband and wife Claire and Phil Dunphy.

“I don’t know what I’m going to talk about in therapy now,” Bowen joked as she accepted her award.

Burrell paid homage to his late father in his acceptance speech – also with a sense of humor.

“‘Why do you have to look like a harlot?’ ” he imagined his father wondering about his decision to go into acting, where he frequently has to wear makeup. “I would say, ‘Dad, just think of me as a very masculine lady.’ ” His ABC show won the first four awards Sunday night, and Modern Family won best comedy series for the second year in a row.

It wasn’t the only déjé vu moment of the night.

For the fourth year in a row, Mad Men secured its reign in the outstanding drama series category, besting HBO’s Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones, as well as The Good Wife, Friday Night Lights and Dexter. The show has not lost this category since it was first nominated in 2008.

Jim Parsons, of The Big Bang Theory, picked up outstanding lead actor in a comedy series, his second Emmy. And Melissa McCarthy, of Mike & Molly, earned her first-ever Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series.

Dramatic Wins

Julianna Margulies took home top dramatic actress honors for her role in The Good Wife, nabbing outstanding lead actress in a drama series.

For his outstanding actor win, Friday Night Lights star Kyle Chandler’s name was squealed by (count-’em) four angels – former and new Charlie’s Angels Minka Kelly, Rachael Taylor, Annie Ilonzeh and Drew Barrymore.

Sixty-year-old Margo Martindale, who played the tough mom and moonshiner Mags Bennett on Justified, was stunned by her first Emmy nomination and win.

“Sometimes things just take time, but with time comes great appreciation,” she said fighting back tears, while also lauding her “kick-ass cast led by Timothy Olyphant.”

Supporting actor in a drama series winner Peter Dinklage, meanwhile, had a tough act to follow.

“Wow, I followed Martin Scorsese – my heart is pounding,” he said when accepting honors for his portrayal of Tyrion on Game of Thrones, thanking network HBO for letting “artists create.” He also thanked his amazing wife and his “dog sitter, Kitty, for taking care of my dog Kevin back in New York while I am here.”

Also earning bragging rights: Guy Pearce and Kate Winslet were both recognized for their roles on period drama Mildred Pierce.
