Skills-based hiring is increasingly being adopted by AU 🦘 businesses (circa 90% takeup rate depending on source) but current recruitment methods (job board/CV focus) aren't supporting this. We need a shift towards marketplace style hiring focused on hard and soft skills rather than the current title/tenure/degree lens. Interesting to note, candidate preference for skills-based hiring (whilst high), trails the business takeup rate - no doubt a result of candidates still feeling defined by title/tenure/degree in the current recruitment landscape.

Had a conversation with a CRO of a $150M ARR business about APJ.    Some interesting takeaways –  1. Impressed by top-end talent but the overall pool is limited. 2. Sticker shock at salaries for Sales and Leadership roles. 3. APJ expansion only came on their radar post-$100M ARR  4. Gathering in-depth market insights on TAM, competition, and cultural nuances is challenging. 5. Strong GTM plan, but the execution needs a seasoned leader to localise it.   Overall sentiment? 💲International recruiters and employers of expat talent will be pleased to learn that relocating to NZ has become a little cheaper in the past year, according to the data collected in the 2024 Mobile Relocation Cost and Policy Report. 🛳️ Shipping Costs have eased slightly across most routes, but the anticipated significant post-COVID price-drop has not materialised due to the crisis in the Red Sea. ✈️ Airfares to NZ have eased as supply and competition on all routes have increased. 🏢Temporary Accommodation Costs have decreased as the economic slowdown has led to reduced domestic travel, resulting in lower demand for Airbnb accommodation. The new ELMO Software employee sentiment report (based on a survey of over 1,000 Australian Employees) offers several brilliant data insights. In particular, I like this chart, which indicates that the FUD around AI replacing our jobs is diminishing and that it will, in fact, augment our increasingly specialised roles. However, the fear of our jobs being offshored is increasing. My takeaway is to be truly indispensable you need to 1. Invest and harness the potential AI and new technology at a personal and organisational level 2. Focus on your individual and unique differentiators 3. Great result by the Kiwi SaaS community In 2023 New Zealand’s Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) sector earned $3.6b in revenue. It has been growing revenue by a 15 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) since 2016, and at this rate it is on track to earn $9.7b by 2030.  By 2030 the report estimates that SaaS export-led added value will be growing faster and contributing more nominal GDP ($4.5b) than New Zealand’s top three primary sector industries (horticulture, dairy product manufacturing and meat product manufacturing).  Since 2016 SaaS exports have been growing at an inflation adjusted rate of 8.7 percent.  This is two and a half times higher than the inflation adjusted CAGR of 3.4 percent that New Zealand’s overall export economy has recorded in the past two decades.  Bruce Jarvis, Head of kiwiSaaS, says that the SaaS sector remains an ‘invisible giant.’  “How much the SaaS sector contributes to our economic wealth today, and could do in the future, is only just becoming visible,” says Jarvis.
