It was great to have had a small amount of input into this, including a visit to a client using the Pryme solution in Europe. Thanks for the mention Robin Allardice it has been a great journey. What impressed me about Pryme was its PROVEN SCALABILITY with one of the largest firms with over 800 staff using it in Europe. There is a BIG difference between vaporware versus realware. A BIG opportunity also presents itself when using a Microsoft based system such as Pryme Global tied in with a solution to maximise Microsoft Office like Intapp - the R&D dollars being invested by both of these dwarves everything. When a firm engages me, I'll discuss with them the merits of ALL PMS systems and their suitability to the goals/aspirations OF THE FIRM and not railroad them down a path of convenience - that is just lazy. Sadly, Australian firms' loyalty to their incumbent vendors has not been reciprocated. Get information from an independent source, not one with vested interests. Reflections from the NZQBA Auckland Bookkeeping Conference! I had such an energising day at the NZQBA Auckland Bookkeeping Conference on Friday, and I’m still buzzing with new ideas! With 179 delegates in attendance, it was a fantastic opportunity to learn, network, and explore the latest tools and trends shaping our industry. The conference covered everything from cutting-edge tech to efficiency strategies that can streamline our work. It’s exciting to see how rapidly the industry is evolving, and how we, as bookkeepers, can harness these changes to better serve our clients. What truly stood out, though, was the opportunity to connect with fellow bookkeepers from across New Zealand. From Auckland locals to attendees from the South Island, it was inspiring to share experiences and ideas. The variety of approaches within our profession is vast, and there’s so much we can learn from each other. One key takeaway for me? The importance of self-care. It’s easy to get caught up in client work, but this conference reminded me that looking after ourselves is just as crucial to doing our best work. And as for marketing? Forget the flashy billboards! Building authentic relationships and engaging in meaningful conversations is where the real value lies. I left the event feeling motivated and ready to implement fresh ideas into my work. If you ever get the chance to attend a professional development event like this, I can’t recommend it enough. The word digitization and cloud tools sounds a lot more daunting than it is 2. It's not hard to find the right tools for your business - you don't have to do it alone 3. It will transform your efficiencies in your business 4. Having more time and sight of your financials in your business, will improve your business. The tools don't improve your financial performance, the information and data you have to make decisions are quicker and better And finally... drum roll please 5. A great deal of relationships between software vendors and councils requires patience and humility. Many years ago, we screwed up and a client moved to a competitor. We are not proud of it, and own our mistakes, and (which is incredible in the local government market, with an average 10-15 year "stickiness" with their ERP!) they came back about 4 years later, asking us to convert them back to our system. That was nearly 10 years ago, and our software has been processing their rates efectively since then. Business as usual. Three years ago we suggested they might consider migrating to our new offering, but no pressure. We are pretty excited that they have just decided to move from our legacy platform PropertyWise to the new, modern CouncilWise Cloud Property and Rating package. Patience. Humility. Relationships matter when it comes to ERP installs. Some might say that our client has spent an extraordinary amount of time making sure they are getting what they want. We think they took the time they needed - and we needed - to give them confidence in our property and rating product. In our market, patience and humility matters.

Next Migration Batch for on-prem file share into SharePoint online migration tasks are rolling! This migration has a couple of significant uploads into some SharePoint Document libraries and has required the deployment of a second SPMT agent in a different geographical location - Victoria - Which tomorrow has a public holiday for the AFL Grand Final - So we started the migration this afternoon at 5PM to increase our upload window! There are some fascinating details in the 2024 National State of the Assets Report, put together by IPWEA in partnership with the Australian Local Government Association. For example: 1. Local Governments collectively own one-third of all Australia's public infrastructure assets, yet employ under 10% of the public workforce. 2. Local Governments are the most asset-intensive level of government in Australia. 3. Total value of assets under Local Government control is $643bn, yet amazingly, their combined revenue was just a fraction of that (around $60bn in 2022-23). Just imagine operating, maintaining and renewing all those assets on this budget - let alone funding all the other non-asset services delivered by Local Government, such as urban planning, economic development/tourism, environmental health (nobody likes dodgy takeaway), animal and pests/weeds management and so much more... It is a real challenge to balance the needs and expectations of the community with financial reality. Therefore, it's not surprising that ~8% of L.G. assets (worth $50-55 billion) are in poor condition. Take just roads... Poor to very poor roads can have significant social, safety and productivity implications at a local and national level (even people living in the big cities don't want bananas bruised from a farm=>store journey via a washed out or potholed road!). All of the above, extracted from the report below, help to emphasise the need for continual improvement to our asset management and long-term financial planning capacity. This continual improvement and, importantly, the long term financial planning and properly funding renewal and replacement of ageing assets takes strong yet delicate leadership. I do not envy any Local Government politicians who seriously engage with this challenge.
