Last week, Education New Zealand Manapou ki te Ao had the privilege of joining student seminar sessions at the EcoQuest Centre for Indigeneity, Ecology, and Creativity in Whakatīwai, on the stunning Wharekawa Coast. These seminars marked the culmination of an incredible learning journey for 22 students from prestigious U.S. institutions, including the University of New Hampshire, the University of Michigan, Cornell University, the University of Vermont, Bowdoin College, Northeastern University, and the University of Virginia. The students have been hard at work analysing data and compiling their research reports. Divided into four teams, they have undertaken impactful projects across the Waikato and Auckland regions, including: - Climate Change: Monitoring: Studying the effects of climate change in a coastal wetland at Pūkorokoro, Robert Findlay Wildlife Reserve. 🌿 - Freshwater Ecology: Examining the abundance and diversity of freshwater fish in the southern Hūnua Ranges. 🌊 - Conservation Biology: Investigating the population structure of Pepeketua (Hochstetter’s frog) in the Hūnua Ranges. 🐸 - Pekapeka Research: Tracking the activity and habitat preferences of Pekapeka tou roa (long-tailed bats) in fragmented rural landscapes. 🦇 The presentations, held at Wharekawa Marae in the coastal village of Kaiaua, showcased not only the students' ecological insights but also their deep respect for Aotearoa's cultural heritage. Ed Tuari, General Manager Māori at ENZ, presented Tū Ngātahi taonga to the students—a symbol of connection and friendship between Aotearoa New Zealand and the United States. This powerful cross-cultural learning experience was made possible by the collaboration of Ngāti Pāoa, Ngāti Whanaunga, Te Ahukaramū Charles Royal, Ria Brejaart and the amazing team of the EcoQuest Centre for Indigeneity, Ecology, and Creativity. A heartfelt thank you to all for fostering this unique blend of education, culture, and sustainability. This experience reflects the transformative power of education that inspires global connections. We are immensely proud to be able to say that New Zealand continues to top the world in university sustainability rankings! 👏 QS has recently released the third edition of the QS Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings: Sustainability. All eight of New Zealand's universities rank in the top 500 this year, giving the country the highest average score in the rankings. Congratulations to our universities for this recognition of their ongoing work in the sustainability space! This is good news for universities as they look to attract students to their campuses especially as QS Destination: Australia and New Zealand report 2024, found that 63% of students interested in studying in New Zealand say environmental sustainability was very or extremely important. Yesterday 80 New Zealand and Chinese officials, academics, and Early Childhood Education (ECE) practitioners came together for the 2024 New Zealand-China Early Childhood Symposium. This was the first time the event was held in New Zealand. The broad themes of the day were emerging opportunities and challenges of digital implementation in teachers’ work in early childhood education, the use of digital technologies for early childhood education assessment, and digital transformation for communication and collaboration with families. A 31-strong delegation from China across 21 universities, schools, kindergartens and government agencies were in attendance to learn and share knowledge with their New Zealand peers. The symposium wouldn't have been possible without the support of the China Center for International People to People Exchange, China Ministry of Education and our gracious hosts at the University of Canterbury. 🎌🎌🎌Unique study and experience opportunities are in growing demand in Japan, an important source of international students for Aotearoa New Zealand. To meet this demand, our wonderful team members in Japan, Misako (Misa) Kitaoka and Tomomi Kontani have been busy supporting New Zealand institutions and regions to share their unique offerings, elevating New Zealand’s key selling points and helping us stand out among competitors. Two examples are rugby clinics for Japanese school students in Tokyo which saw 100 students attending across three sessions and the other, a delegation visiting international and IB schools in Okinawa to raise awareness for their region. Misa and Tomomi are continuing to explore this market and connection opportunities with New Zealand and Japanese institutions.
