This is great news. We're delighted that the new UK government has reaffirmed its commitment to the Graduate route visa, and highlighted that international students are welcome. The International Graduate Outcomes 2024 report, which we published in collaboration with Universities UK International clearly showed the impact of the Graduate route visa on students and the economy. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/ejGiDkfz 🎓73% of surveyed graduates felt that the visa met their expectations, reporting higher job satisfaction than those on other visas. ⚕️60% of respondents still living in the UK work in small- to medium-sized organisations, with the highest percentage employed in healthcare. We also know the importance of a welcoming environment. In Destination: UK, our new report based on the QS International Student Survey 2024, we revealed that 52% of students interested in studying in the UK said that a welcoming environment for international students was an important factor when choosing a country to study in. This concept of a European multi institution joint degree is very exciting and presents many opportunities for mobility. A peer reviewed study I did for a provincial agency in 2013 looked at the Canadian experience in this area and found somewhat simpler two and three party models but this pushes the envelope even further. It also brings to mind interesting ways to support access such as for refugees. I recall back in the early 2000s working with faculty colleagues across several institutions around the world to deliver such a cross institutional degree that was accessible to those in refugee camps. One institution was the anchor for the degree credential and several others contributed courses. Yes, these opportunities challenge residency regs and cause creative disruption for transcription, course delivery, student information systems and more but what a worthy way to “break” longstanding practices and rules, create transformative opportunities, and support nurturing of global citizenry. The international student population in the Netherlands has grown significantly over the past decade. According to the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the number of international students in Dutch higher education institutions reached approximately 120,000 in the 2022-2023 academic year, accounting for about 11% of the total student population. The majority of these students come from European Union (EU) countries, with significant numbers also from China, India, and India.

Speaking up for British students in international schools applying to UK universities - a call for a more nuanced approach to the debate about international admissions. My latest letter to the The Times. My substantive point is that recent debates about international students in UK universities have conflated two distinct groups: - UK passport-holders studying in British international schools around the world; and - foreign citizens. I believe that the former group should, in practice, be a sub-category of domestic applicants, and, as a consequence of this, should be given a priority on places. At present the issue is confused by how universities consider each applicant’s application for “home status”; with universities applying different interpretations of the legislation.
