This post by Robert Vis should deserve more attention. I have a deep respect for Robert Vis for what he was able to do with (Message) Bird. Why? Bird is a very interesting, innovative company. Practically a big-tech in Europe, or rather, an attempt. To scale the main obstacle is becoming Europe itself. Europe has a big problem with entrepreneurship, free markets and innovation. Robert is right. The entrepreneur is not seen well in Europe, the efforts in creating a company, which then means creating wealth, are not appreciated. A Europe hostile to innovation and enterprise, but attached to corporations and privileges. A Europe hostile to technology, see AI, a lot of confusion, little knowledge, pride in regulating what it doesn't even know. A Europe with a free market on paper, but in practice controlled and influenced by politics. A Europe that is afraid of change, of losing privileges, is afraid of innovation and closes itself in to defend itself from change. Which is inevitable. A Europe without vision, a slave to politics, in turn a slave to consensus. Robert is right, we need to look elsewhere. United States, Switzerland, Singapore. I would also add UK. Too bad for Germany, it is devastating its potential to become a global player in tech. Incredible opportunity for the United States to attract European talent and companies, make them scale and prosper right up to the gates of Wall Street. Incredible opportunity for Switzerland to be able to create a high-tech ecosystem that can attract European players, given its geography. The Europe that slams the door in the face of entrepreneurs and innovation with pride should not then complain about its own decline. #Europe #Innovation #Startup

Golden Rock Resort: Amazing holidays can be sustainable! Nestled on the beautiful island of St. Eustatius in the Dutch Caribbean, a short ferry journey from St Kitts, Golden Rock has set a benchmark for sustainability in luxury hospitality. Since its opening in September 2021 on the pristine shores of St. Eustatius, this resort has demonstrated a profound commitment to the environment, local community, and the well-being of its guests, redefining what it means to be a sustainable lifestyle resort in the Caribbean. Central to Golden Rock's sustainability efforts is its dedication to environmental stewardship and biodiversity. The resort has planted over 130,000 plants, flowers, and trees, transforming the grounds into breathtaking gardens that guests can explore. The Resort operates a 20,000 ft² greenhouse, located near Bobbie's Beach Club. Here, the resort grows organic herbs and vegetables without the use of pesticides, thanks to the region's favourable climate and natural sunlight. This year-round cultivation reduces reliance on imported produce from Europe and the USA, fostering self-sufficiency. Guests are encouraged to visit the greenhouse, where they can pick their own produce and enjoy a true farm-to-table experience at the resort’s restaurants, Breeze and Bobbie’s Beach Club. Energy sustainability is another pillar of Golden Rock’s commitment to the environment. The resort is powered by 2,240 solar panels that generate 0.8 megawatts of electricity daily. This substantial energy production allows the resort to operate almost entirely off the grid, with excess electricity stored in batteries for use overnight. This initiative underscores Golden Rock’s dedication to renewable energy and reducing its carbon footprint. Water management at Golden Rock is impressive: utilising advanced reverse osmosis technology to convert saltwater into pure, clean drinking water. This system, capable of storing up to 240,000 litres of water underground, ensuring a continuous supply of safe drinking water for guests. Additionally, wastewater is treated through helophyte filters and repurposed to irrigate the resort’s lush gardens, exemplifying a closed-loop water usage system. Golden Rock’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond environmental concerns to include robust community engagement. By supporting local artisans, sourcing materials locally, and providing employment opportunities, the resort contributes significantly to the social and economic well-being of the surrounding St. Eustatius community. This symbiotic relationship ensures that the benefits of Golden Rock are felt as a sustainable future for the region. 🚫 𝗜𝘀 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗱𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻? 🚫 The travel industry, represented by the Dutch Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (#ANVR), has announced it will challenge The Hague’s new ban on ads for fossil-fuel-related products—including air travel, cruises, and cars with fossil or hybrid engines—in court. The industry argues that the ban 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 and that a local prohibition like this will have minimal impact on global climate issues. Hoteliers, the key to a successful luxury strategy can be by un-plugging your guests. We recently wrapped up our brand development and strategy with our client in Belgium. Our workshops and discussions emphasized wellness, nature, and serenity. Those are all key characteristics to the positioning and brand experience we developed. A trickier discussion was about technology and the extent to which it was available to guests. We vetted and integrated a tech stack that allowed guests to autonomously check-in, buy food and beverage, and book amenities. But a point of contention was having TV’s in the bedrooms. Often times, hotels force elements into the experience that guests are used to. Such as televisions in the rooms. This is done in hopes of increasing ADR through the available amenities/features and perceived value of the stay. But, that doesn’t mean its right for every property or brand. Or even for that specific guest, during that specific experience. We had a brief debate about it. They mentioned that many guests ‘expect’ to have televisions in modern hotel rooms. But we always brought the decision making back to the strategy and concept. If your hotel focuses on wellness and disconnecting - TVs have no place in the rooms. They distract guests (easy entertainment), cause stress (news), and take away from the experience (not being present). With the natural surroundings available to guests, The bike paths and walking routes the hotel provided, And the peace and quiet they could experience, Having TVs in the rooms would break the promise of the brand, and the ethos/values they communicated via social media and website. It ended up being a simple decision, but not something straightforward at first glance. Never sacrifice your hotel’s values and raison d’etre for what you think guests may ‘expect’ from other properties. Guests will lose trust with the brand due to breaking consistency in the experience and end up in lost revenues and negative reviews over time.
