  • Today, 11 key players in the hydrogen value chain, including Nobian, handed over a Letter of Support to accelerate the development of underground hydrogen storage in the Netherlands to Nel Aland (Envoy for Energy Storage) and Kees Hansma (Director Transition Deep Underground) of the Ministry of Climate Policy and Green Growth (Ministerie van Klimaat en Groene Groei). Underground hydrogen storage is crucial for a functioning hydrogen infrastructure and market in the Netherlands. It will play an essential role in the future energy system by helping to balance hydrogen supply and demand and developing of the hydrogen market. Salt caverns are highly suitable for large-scale, fast-cycle hydrogen storage. It is currently the only proven and available technology for large-scale underground hydrogen storage. The signatories to the letter call on the Dutch government to leverage the Dutch Climate Fund further investigate underground hydrogen storage possibilities, which helps to de-risk the development of salt caverns for hydrogen storage.     #EnergyStorage #Hydrogen #Sustainability #Innovation  Sophie Hermans Alexander Kops Silvio Erkens Wytske Postma Henk Vermeer Suzanne Kröger Henri Bontebal Eline Vedder-Monaster Ilana Rooderkerk  Koninklijke VEMW Uniper Equinor Vattenfall NLHydrogen Energie-Nederland OCI Global ENGIE Energie Nederland NV HyCC Energy Storage NL Nobian

  • As part of our Further Together community program, Nobian in Frankfurt proudly supported the ‘Tatorte’ (Crime Scenes) campaign. This initiative was organized under the UN’s UNiTE campaign, launched for this year's International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. In Frankfurt, the day was marked with an outdoor campaign ‘Tatorte’ (Crime Scenes), initiated by local support groups. The campaign included impressive images remembering some of the victims, a loud NO to violence against girls and women and, above all, information about where those affected can find help. Further Together is Nobian's community engagement program that enables our employees to get involved in projects in the communities where we work, building strong relationships with our neighbors and stakeholders and making a meaningful local contribution. #FurtherTogether #Community #Care #NoExcuse

  • At yesterday’s Offshore Industry Conference, Marco Waas, Nobian's Chief Technology and Sustainability Officer, engaged in discussions on the future of offshore wind energy. Marco participated in a panel of experts discussing the future of energy systems, with a focus on new offtake and connections. The panel addressed solutions for net congestion, capacity challenges, and the slow uptake of offshore electricity. Alongside industry leaders Kristian Borum Jørgensen (CEO, Maersk Stillstrom), Ruben Dijkstra (Managing Director Benelux, Ørsted) and David Zenner (Chief Assets Officer, Elia Group), Marco explored innovative strategies to ensure efficient energy delivery to consumers. This transition to a sustainable energy system is crucial for a robust and geopolitically resilient economy. In Northwest Europe, cooperation among stakeholders in Germany, Belgium, Denmark, the UK, the Nordic countries, and the Netherlands is essential. While the private sector must take action, political leadership from the EU and the countries involved is vital. #OffshoreWind #Energy #Sustainability #Innovation #GrowGreenerTogether Management Productions

  • The first Nobian PPA in Germany has been realized. Tion Renewables and Nobian have signed a Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to supply Nobian with sustainable electricity in Germany. This partnership is set to support the reduction of Nobian’s Scope 2 emissions by 20,000 tCO2 per year. The customized PPA, spanning 2026 to 2028, will supply Nobian from an installed capacity of approximately 25 MW, with an estimated production of between 35 to 40 GWh a year, equaling the annual electricity consumption of 10,000 households. This PPA in Germany with Tion Renewables marks another milestone in our journey to achieve zero-carbon with 100% renewable energy by 2040. Johan Hospers, Director Energy at Nobian: “This agreement underlines our commitment to procure electricity in the countries where we operate and strengthens our sustainability efforts across Europe. The volume will be allocated to Nobian’s electrolysis plant in Bitterfeld in eastern Germany, where it will cover all electricity consumption during periods of high wind. Annually this is approximately 20-25% of the plant’s total energy consumption with an expected Scope 2 emissions saving of 20,000 tCO2 per year.”   Nobian is keen to pursue additional PPAs in Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark over the coming years to expand our renewable energy portfolio. This will help to generate low carbon products by reducing CO2 emissions in our production processes for salt, chlorine, caustic soda, and hydrogen. • It’s official! Nobian's new Innovation Center on the campus of the University of Twente in Enschede is now open. On 13 November, our CEO Michael Koenig cut the ribbon alongside the University’s Chief Development Officer Geert Dewulf to inaugurate our new lab.   Michael emphasized the significance of situating our R&D facilities in such an innovative environment and celebrated our long-standing relationship with the University of Twente, dating back to the 1960s when Koninklijke Nederlandse Zout (Royal Dutch Salt), a predecessor of Nobian, co-founded the university.   The opening ceremony was a joyous occasion, attended by about 80 guests, including Jennifer Herek, Dean of the Faculty of Science & Technology, who enjoyed a tour of the Innovation Center.   Special thanks to Geert Dewulf for the warm welcome and to the University of Twente for the continued partnership. In the spirit of this collaboration, our Chief Technology & Sustainability Officer, Marco Waas, presented the university with a tree that will be planted next to the Innovation Center.   We wish our colleagues all the best in their new workplace.   Read more about the opening on our website: https://lnkd.in/dGejJeRU #Innovation #Sustainability #GrowGreenerTogether

  • We are pleased to announce that Gas Storage Denmark and Nobian have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore potential collaboration in energy storage in Denmark. The collaboration will explore partnership opportunities and the development of energy storage caverns, including hydrogen storage. The initiative is set to enhance Denmark’s energy infrastructure and support the transition to renewable energy by leveraging Gas Storage Denmark’s expertise in high-pressure underground gas storage and Nobian Dansk Salt’s extensive experience in salt cavern development. By exploring the development of hydrogen storage caverns, both companies aim to support and unlock Denmark’s renewable energy potential and position the country as a leading hub for hydrogen in the Nordic region. Michael Koenig, CEO of Nobian: “Nobian Dansk Salt is uniquely positioned to contribute to the hydrogen infrastructure and the hydrogen economy. To build sustainable hydrogen chains, we need to promote knowledge sharing, research, technological innovation, and infrastructure development. This collaboration, the first hydrogen storage partnership between partners in the Netherlands and Denmark, addresses the need to develop hydrogen storage solutions in Denmark”. Søren Møller, Site Director of Nobian Dansk Salt: “We are very pleased with this collaboration, which aligns perfectly with our new role as a key enabler and balancing partner in green energy production, storage, and grid stability”. The MoU was signed during a conference as part of the working visit of His Majesty King Willem Alexander of the Kingdom of The Netherlands to Denmark and Norway on 12-13 November. The visit focused on the development of the hydrogen market in Northwestern Europe, with hydrogen and the energy system of the future as the main themes. A Dutch business delegation active in the area of hydrogen and energy infrastructure, including Nobian, also participated.
