Is the current international architecture for climate action in food systems boxing us in to inaction? Can we step out of the box and analyse how we can create an architecture which works for people and planet at the scale and pace that is needed? This will be the focus of our event at #COP29 "Analysing the international architecture for climate action in food systems" scheduled on 20 November at 15:00 in Side Event Room 8 💪🏾 Find out more 👉🏾 https://lnkd.in/eCHWsvcp Clim-Eat | AgriCord | Wageningen University & Research | Government of the Netherlands | Ministerio da Agricultura | Southern African Confederation of Agricultural Unions (SACAU)

“We really need to catalyze sustainable synergies for planet-centric progress. It’s the only way forward.” 🙄 Are you hearing phrases like these during COP29? High-level climate meetings are often an incredible word salad, filled with international development and climate diplomacy jargon. Trust us, we know. Almost all COP29 events suffer from this strange linguistic phenomenon - including ours! 😅 At times, the language is warranted, and something sincere is communicated... somewhere between the lines of jargon. Other times, the language is empty, a mere collection of terminology reflecting nothing but the energy spent bundling them together. And this year, we have decided to collect it! 🥁 🥁🥁 Introducing... the 𝐂𝐎𝐏𝟐𝟗 𝐉𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫: a place to submit your favourite climate diplomacy jargon! 🎉 Just open the webpage and enter your phrase into the search field. Here, you can also check out the wonderful phrases other COP29 goers have overheard. Take a look, and leave your phrase 👉 https://lnkd.in/eqfEEpCS

Today, Leanne shared the insights from Clim-Eat's latest Policy Brief, exploring game-changing actions to pursue positive outcomes across #nutrition and #climate. Alongside dsm-firmenich, EIT Food, and Mosa Meat, the panel discussed the role of protein diversification in the intersection of climate change, nutrition, and food security. Authored by Clim-Eaters Leanne, Senni and Bruce, the brief connects the dots between environmental and nutritional outcomes. By integrating nutrition into climate policies, promoting public-private cooperation, diversifying agricultural outputs, and building resilience for vulnerable populations, we can foster a more sustainable and nourishing future. Here pictured with Robert E. Jones, Nicholas Towle, Jaime de Bourbon de Parme, and Richard Zaltzman. The brief was produced under the Nutrition-Climate Game-Changers project and funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the European Commission. The work is carried out by Clim-Eat and implemented with the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. 📃 The full brief can be accessed here 👉 https://lnkd.in/esCUGBUG

Can diversifying our proteins help tackle climate change, boost food security, and improve nutrition—all at once? Today’s panel dug into exactly that. During the session, I shared some insights from our newly launched policy brief on climate-nutrition win-wins, highlighting ways to make climate and nutrition work together—especially for those already living and farming under climate challenges. Here are three key points from the brief related to protein diversification that I shared in the session: 1️⃣ Availability Diversifying what is produced is a way to build resilience, especially for farmers who are already faced with climate change and climate shocks. At the same time, introducing beans or rice-duck integrated systems also provides additional protein sources—a clear win-win. 2️⃣ Affordability Public-private partnerships work when incentives align. Africa Improved Foods is a great example, using creative collaboration to make fortified foods more accessible and affordable. Reducing food loss is another crucial lever to boost supply and lower prices without increasing production. 3️⃣ Accessibility Social protection schemes are critical in addressing food and nutrition insecurity amid climate change. Aligning policies—like public procurement for school meals—with climate and nutrition goals has immense potential to improve resilience, especially for vulnerable groups like women and children. There’s much more in the policy brief (link in the comments), but the bottom line? There are plenty of win-win solutions to address climate change, food security, and nutrition, including protein diversification. We just need to be better at connecting the dots between them. Big thanks to my fellow organizers and speakers for the open and nuanced conversation today: Robert E. Jones and Richard Zaltzman at EIT Food, Nicholas Towle and Reint-Jan Groot Nuelend at dsm-firmenich, Zaltzman and Jaime de Bourbon de Parme from the Netherlands, and the Pavilion hosts Government of the Netherlands, Luxembourg & Belgium and the European Investment Bank (EIB). And to our partners Jennifer Braun, Taufiqul Mujib, Pouchamarn Wongsanga at Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH / European Commission / Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), with whom we’re excited to advance this important work.

Nutrition and climate change are deeply interconnected. As climate change exacerbates food insecurity and malnutrition, ASEAN nations face distinct challenges but hold immense potential to become leaders in harmonizing climate and nutrition goals, creating resilient, sustainable agrifood systems. On November 20th, Clim-Eat, the European Commission, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) will organise the COP29 event "Nutrition-Climate Game Changers: A Pathway for Asean Through NAPs and NDCs." The event will focus on the integration of nutrition into National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Looking ahead, the event will connect these discussions to upcoming global nutrition platforms in 2025. Join us at Thailand Pavilion at 11:00 - 12:00 local time.
