While it is often captivating to have pastoralists as our audience, mostly to motivate the uptake of innovations, it is even more fulfilling to hear pastoralists converse about the diverse issues affecting them. The 2024 inaugural National Pastoralist Conference, held in Isiolo provided a great opportunity for us to listen to them. The greatest take home for us was the expressed demand for collective action through cooperatives to harness high-value output and inputs markets for livestock products. The pastoralists envy the functional milk, coffee, and tea cooperatives in other production systems. The recurring anchor question was, "Why aren't we organized like them?" This is the question we are pondering together with technology partners like #wowzi and #Kifiya, to provide a digitally enabled aggregation mechanism for the unique pastoral system. Stay tuned

Data Scarcity is often a missing link between development, innovation, and policy. Filling this gap is an uphill task—you know it. AIID-AFRICA is honed to provide data solutions across Agri-food systems. We have the network and technology to capture high-frequency data. We are happy and honored to have recently completed a mission for the WorldFish in aquatic systems. Now we are preparing to attack the Pastoral systems with capacity-building interventions to boost the adoption of resilient building financial innovations through the hashtag #DRIVE program Stay tuned

Untapped potential in Kenya’s agricultural insurance market "Kenya's agricultural sector is the backbone of the economy contributing to approximately 20 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Findings by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations indicate that over the last 30 years, an estimated KES 490 trillion( USD 3.8 trillion) worth of crops and livestock production has been lost due to disaster events, corresponding to an average loss of KES 15.9 trillion(USD 123 billion) per year".

The financialization of risks is a transformative innovation that has facilitated enhanced value creation in the exchange of goods and services in the world. From the Genoa policies in the 14th century to the current complex parametric insurance covering climate-induced shocks, signifies the fundamental role of insurance in advancing humanity. The growth of the sector has been a gradual transition from the age-long informal insurance systems, epitomized by strategic grain reserves held by the ancient monarchies of China and the Pharaohs of Egypt. To date, a significant segment of the world population has limited access to insurance. It is even more intriguing that not only is the sector depicting low uptake, especially in developing contexts, where livelihoods are dependent on agriculture but also a significant proportion of its stability hinges on public funds. The recurrence of insurance information has a great bearing on increasing awareness -to increasing knowledge -to increasing demand and supply. As we end the Insurance Awareness Month, AIID_AFRICA reaffirms its commitment to catalyzing the re-orientation of the insurance industry to spur a value proposition necessary for its exponential growth.
