Kangstem Biotech recently applied for a Class 1 regenerative medicine license from Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, based on cord blood stem cells. This license will enable the company to produce and supply allogeneic cord blood stem cells to Japanese medical institutions for the treating atopic patients.   The Japanese regenerative medicine market is predominantly focused on autologous adipose stem cell-based type 2 therapies, with no approved cares of type 1 regenerative medicine using allogeneic stem cells to date. In April, Kangstem Biotech signed a MOU with Tokyo-based Medical Care Group, specializing in immunotherapy for cancer treatment, to seek approval for the first allogeneic cord blood stem cell-based type 1 regenerative medicine in Japan.   Medical Care Group of Japan has shown optimism regarding the approval of the Type 1 regenerative medicine license, citing Kangstem Biotech's copmprehensive safety data from over 600 patients in clinical trials, as well as their GMP-compliant facilities and equipment.   Cord blood stem cells, isolated from umbilical cord blood, are the youngest and healthiest cells with superior growth and differentiation capabilities compared to fat- and bone marrow-derived stem cells. Clinical trials have demonstrated their superior therapeutic effects.   Acquiring a Class 1 regenerative medicine license will allow Furestem-AD® Inj. to be used as a treatment for atopic dermatitis even before final approval. Given that Japan has an estimated three times mor atopic patients that Korea, this presents a highly promising market opportunity. Hong Kong Baptist University and Infinitus China Company Ltd signed a MoU last week to launch a strategic collaboration focused on research related to food as medicine. This partnership will establish the "Infinitus-Hong Kong Baptist University Joint Laboratory of Polysaccharide Research,” dedicated to investigating the health benefits and applications of herb polysaccharides. The first two research projects will be led by Prof. Simon Han Quanbin and Dr Xu Jun from the School of Chinese Medicine. They will explore the effects of polysaccharides derived from traditional Chinese herbs, such as Astragalus and Dendrobium, on lung immunity, as well as the potential of herbal polysaccharides in inhibiting intestinal polyp growth. The MOU was signed by Dr Ken Yeung, Director of Technology Translation of HKBU, and Dr Frank Ma, Vice President and Chief Science Innovation Officer of Infinitus (China). Kangstem Biotech(“Kangstem”) announced, on Nov 7, 2024, that it has entered into a licensing agreement with YooYoung Pharmaceutical(“YooYoung”), a company specialized in musculoskeletal products in South Korea, for its stem cell-based combination therapy with acellular cartilage matrix, OSCA, which is being developed for the fundamental treatment of osteoarthritis.   Under the terms of the agreement, Kangstem will receive a total of at least KRW 14 billion, which includes an upfront payment of KRW 2 billion, short-term milestone payments of KRW 6 billion. Additionally, further KRW X billion payments will be made if certain conditions, such as conditional approval during the clinical process, are achieved.   YooYoung will be fully responsible for KRW XX billion of clinical costs and development process of the Phase 2b and 3 clinical trials of OSCA, as well as the subsequent exclusive sales and distribution in South Korea. As a result, Kangstem will significantly reduce its R&D expenses and expects to generate revenue from providing OSCA as investigational products. Additionally, Kangstem will handle manufacturing and supplying for the domestic market and receive sales royalties, ensuring a long-term revenue stream.   OSCA aims to provide a fundamental treatment for osteoarthritis through intra-articular injection into the knee joint, without the need for surgery. The global population of osteoarthritis patients is estimated to be around 600 million, and with the increase of the aging population, the demand for related treatments is rapidly increasing. However, existing osteoarthritis treatments on the market only provide pain relief, and no DMOAD are available. OSCA has shown significant improvements in both pain relief and structure, such as cartilage repair and subchondral bone regeneration in its Phase 1 clinical trial, and is expected to meet the unmet medical needs of patients and establish itself as a global blockbuster drug.   Kangstem Biotech expects to secure the full result of the OSCA Phase 1 clinical trial in November. Following this, the company plans to present clinical data from the Phase 1 clinical trial, including MRI images showing structural improvements such as cartilage regeneration at various international conferences.   “This License-out is significant as it marks our first agreement through our unique technologies and development, and it is also the world’s first License-out for a stem cell-based combination therapy.” said JongCheon Na, the Chief Executive Officer of Kangstem. “Moreover, it was executed during the Phase 1 clinical trial at the early stage of development, and the early recognition of OSCA’s efficacy and potential as an osteoarthritis treatment makes this a meaningful achievement. Because visual perception is one of the fundamental sensory interactions in the brain, eye movements contain critical information regarding physical/psychological health, perception, intention, and preference. With the advancement of wearable device technologies, the performance of monitoring eye tracking has been significantly improved. It also has led to myriad applications for assisting and augmenting human activities. Among them, electrooculograms, measured by skin-mounted electrodes, have been widely used to track eye motions accurately. In addition, eye trackers that detect reflected optical signals offer alternative ways without using wearable sensors. This paper outlines a systematic summary of the latest research on various materials, sensors, and integrated systems for monitoring eye movements and enabling human-machine interfaces. Specifically, we summarize recent developments in soft materials, biocompatible materials, manufacturing methods, sensor functions, systems’ performances, and their applications in eye tracking. Finally, we discuss the remaining challenges and suggest research directions for future studies.
