With development costs rising, we need to make games based on user feedback, not numbers and data from the past, says NEXON Games' Yong-hyun Park. Well, I never... He goes further "I think that focusing on user feedback is the most reliable standard at present … I think that if you confidently tell the upper management, 'This game will be well received by users!', it will be accepted, but I don’t think it will work if you say, 'We can make this much money.' This is because the sales figures change depending on various circumstances." Yong makes a good point, and appears to be a fan of Goodharts Law. Don’t makes games by the numbers—use data as a reference, not an absolute, and just because something worked before doesn’t mean it will work again. He seems like a CEO who understands that gaming sales and trends can vary wildly, and past success doesn’t guarantee future results. That said... Developers should listen to player feedback, but also filter it wisely and be willing to change course when necessary, rather than sticking to solutions that might alienate their fanbase. Ironically, relying too heavily on user feedback is that it often leads to creating games "by the numbers." When you ask players what they want, they tend to describe what they already know and like. For example, if I’d never played a Souls-like, Minecraft, The Sims, or Frostpunk, I’d never know to ask for games like them. Player feedback is valuable, but it’s often misused or ineffective when not properly filtered. A recent example: Zenless Zone Zero After complaints about "TV Mode" slowing down the story, the developers removed it from the main story, keeping it in side content. This sparked debate—some liked the faster pacing, while others felt TV Mode was vital to the game’s lore. Realizing this, the developers reworked TV Mode and reintegrated it into the story, leading to positive feedback. This shows the importance of filtering feedback and staying flexible. Many studios fail to adjust, then blame the players when their solutions don't align with player expectations. Developers need to listen and course-correct when needed. Personally, as a player, I would love to see more games made from developer inspiration, not market predictions, the latter often leading to bland experiences. However, in today's industry, that's mostly a dream reserved for indie projects or those not aiming for major profits—something a CEO can’t afford to publicly endorse. Hence why the development cost of games should decrease. Costs don’t seem to correlate with sales anymore and often end up being more harmful than helpful.

📊 Games & Numbers (04.09.24 - 17.09.24) 🎮 PC/console games ◾️Sales of Black Myth: Wukong surpassed 18 million copies in just two weeks. This was reported by Daniel Wu, one of the founders of Hero Games, the largest shareholder of the game's developers. According to him, the game's development cost $70 million and took 6 years. ◾️Street Fighter 6 sales reached 4 million copies across all platforms. The total sales of the series as of the end of the first half of 2024 stand at 55 million. ◾️Sales of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 are approaching 3 million copies, earning more than all other Warhammer universe games combined in 2023. ◾️Harrison Froschke, Senior Product Manager at Blizzard Entertainment, revealed on his LinkedIn the revenue of Diablo IV. The game has surpassed $1 billion in earnings, with $150 million coming from microtransactions. Blizzard had officially reported that the game earned $666 million in its first 5 days of sales. ◾️More than 1 million people have played Citizen Sleeper. The studio and publisher (Fellow Traveller) proudly shared this on their social media. ◾️Released on August 15, shapez 2 has already sold 260,000 copies. "Atlus is one of our most successful acquisition deals to date," says Sega Sammy as Metaphor: ReFantazio posts strong sales. Sega Sammy Holdings highlighted the success of Metaphor: ReFantazio and Sonic X Shadow Generations during a Q2 FY2025 earnings Q&A. Atlus, developer of Metaphor: ReFantazio and the Persona series, was praised as one of Sega’s “most successful M&A deals to date.” Acquired in 2013 for about ~$140m, Atlus has benefited from Sega’s global publishing reach, enabling broader multi-platform launches. “By joining forces with Sega, they have gained the capability to expand their targets,” said Sega Sammy, crediting the partnership and Metaphor’s high quality for its strong debut. Sega picking up Atlus has been pretty good for me. Just getting their games on more platforms has been a huge boon. With so many RPGs becoming less RPG and more action, Atlus is one of the only studios consistently putting out great classic-styled JRPGs with good production values. Atlus was also a great acquisition for Sega from a consumer perspective because it meant Sega could work with Atlus to expand to the ever-growing PC market. Sega made some really great decisions, particulary with Metaphor, and I'm glad to see those decisions paying off. - Going multiplatform from the start - Putting out a great demo that let you experience almost an entire in game cycle without time constraints All of that made possible because they trusted that the game was really strong. I hope this leads to more demos like this. Certainly up there for game of the year, and with Infinite Wealth, glad to see Sega supporting their top studios to do their thing.

We did a deepdive episode on Wechat minigames with Lemon Choi, who runs a Minigames blog and is an expert on the matter 😎. Some of the facts and numbers that he shared are mind-blowing 😱. The expected MAU of the minigame market will exceed 500 Million 🕹 users in China this year, with an average daily play session of 60 minutes per day per user. These minigames are produced very fast (2-3 months) by small teams from 5-30 people, with the development cost around $140K per 1 minigame 😱. There are multiple dominant genres (nearly all of them being RPGs) that are prevalent in the market, with Loot Box RPG (Nobody's Adventure Chop- Chop 🐷 ) being the biggest genre per revenue share with around 30% of the whole market. This specific sub-genre has also a big impact on design iteration of other genres as seen in the episode. The new promising genre that Lemon showed us is 2D Arcade Idle + 4X (you can see the game "Fingertips Warriors" in the screenshots). Yeah you heard it right, imagine your typical Dreamdale or My Perfect Hotel with a 4X metagame on top 🤑. This game is already making millions in the top 10 charts of Wechat minigames. Soop, a new livestreaming platform, is set to launch globally on June 5th with the help of LoL esports legend “Faker” and the esports organization DRX. SOOP is made by AfreecaTV Co., Ltd. which is one of the most notable live streaming platforms in Korea. The platform is said to be “tailor-made for esports and gaming fans”, with the platform working with a variety of personalities, game publishers, and tournament organizers to have content on launch. Some features of the platform include having up to 3 channels on one account, free virtual streaming (vtuber), real time translation with subtitles, and a content support for various creative ideas for streamers. These are all quite interesting features that seem to be decently unique in the streaming world. The mobile app is currently available for pre-registration on the Google Play and Apple App Store, with English, Thai, and Chinese webpages available as well. Will be interesting to see what regions this sticks in and how it’ll compare to other streaming platforms like Twitch, YouTube, Kick, and others. 💭 Would you pay more for fair pricing? Once Human, a new free-to-play survival game by NetEase, has been praised for its fair and unobtrusive monetization practices. Unlike many games that push aggressive "pay-to-win" microtransactions that tend to infuriate gamers, Once Human focuses primarily on cosmetic items, and does not force them on customers (may even make them too difficult to find!) What caught my eye in the article is that the Battle Pass (monthly subscription) is not considered to be particularly impressive, but some gamers are buying it anyway to support the Once Human developers. One interviewee had spent over $100 just through goodwill! Perceived fairness and acceptability of pricing undoubtedly results in happier customers - that's nothing new. And certain customer segments will not buy without transparent pricing. But Once Human's success might even suggest that fair and transparent pricing might be more lucrative for the vendor, even in industries where more aggressive pricing is the norm. We so often think of scenarios that are "good for the customer" and "good for the vendor," we need to remember that some moves are truly win-win. What do you think about Once Human's approach?
