🔔 Important news: 🔔 Special issue on #Innovation #Policy in Industrial and Corporate Change coordinated by Jakob Edler (Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI), Silvia Massini (The University of Manchester) and myself (Dipartimento di Scienze Economiche at Università degli Studi di Bergamo), has a new deadline ❗ 28 November 2924 ❗ The purpose of this ICC special issue is to revisit existing #theoretical models of #InnovationPolicy with a critical and contemporary eye, to understand the effectiveness of past models and their usefulness in the current and future economic settings. A particular focus will be placed on research addressing new conceptual issues arising from the socio-economic post-pandemic realities, trade de-coupling between large economic powers, increased attention to firm and countries' resilience, as well as empirical evidence on the impact of recent innovation and industrial policies, to address the dual - digital and green - transformation. Interdisciplinary research projects that bring together experts from different fields to address societal challenges such as public health, climate change or technological innovation and acquisition have recently become more popular. By drawing on the strenghts of diverse disciplines, a multidisciplinary approach promotes critical thinking, creativity and innovation. Also financial education policy – considered nowadays a priority could profit from interdisciplinary research approaches. Developed in collaboration with two Bocconi colleagues – Donato Masciandaro and Alessia Papini - our article uses political economy, marketing and text analysis as interwined methodological tools to offer a positive analysis in which financial education is the outcome of both market- and state forces. More directly, we outline whether and under which conditions a public certifier can increase the social welfare. A special thank to the Editor and to my estimated colleagues. After a workshop on Remedy a few months ago, I was happy to present the business case on DEI in person to a number of Italian companies thanks to the Italian Observatory on Business & Human Rights in Milan. So many great studies now showing that companies that invest in having a more diverse and inclusive company will do better than their counterparts - and that DEI too is an integral part of their sustainability journey. The recent updates to the World Gender Benchmark were of great interest (where Italian companies - particularly in the apparel sector - do not fare well). I introduced the group to the label ‘male, pale, and stale’ (which got a few chuckles) and highlighted some costly and reputationally damaging mistakes that companies have made by NOT having diverse and inclusive teams at all levels. Of course we could not ignore the very poor position of women in the Italian labor market vis a vis their European counterparts (even though they outperform the men in terms of educational attainment). I am hoping the new gender certification that the government has launched will have an impact. This certification gives tax credits to companies and provides advantages for procurement contracts if companies show what they are doing to improve the hiring and retention etc of diverse employees with clear benchmarks and targets. Of course, I do hope that companies ‘get it’ without the need for all this… so we can move beyond compliance to best practices. #BHR #DEI #dirittiumani #ESG #CorporateSustainability #humanrights #duediligence

Social Innovation for Health, Social Care and Wellbeing 3 *Strategic Social Innovation: Towards New Entrepreneurial Arrangements between the State & Social Enterprises? Alessandro Sancino and Francesca Calò Sancino and Calo present a compelling argument for redefining the strategic relationship between public organizations and social enterprises to enhance transformative social innovation. They contend that by fostering these relationships, it is possible to scale up and scale out public value co-creation, thereby strengthening the social economy sector, mitigating the negative externalities of capitalism, and paving the way for post-capitalist, collaborative governance models based on civic wealth creation. Sancino and Calo's research addresses a critical gap identified in recent reviews, which have found a limited understanding of the public sector’s potential in leveraging its unique position to tackle social problems at scale and an underestimation of the benefits of adopting social enterprise solutions for public value co-creation. Their work engages with the literature on strategic public management and builds on the concept of "strategy management at scale," which they argue can be instrumental in fostering holistic responses to complex societal challenges. The concept of strategy management at scale, as explicated by Sancino and Calo, involves creating direction, alignment, and commitment across multiple organizations and sectors to address large-scale issues. This approach moves beyond the traditional strategic management of single organizations by focusing on systemic and outcome-oriented strategizing, which relies on the co-alignment and co-missioning of many actors, none of whom are solely in charge. This innovative framework has broad applications for public, social, and environmental causes and offers a new lens for strategizing collaborative governance, a trend identified as significant in future strategic public management. Sancino and Calo also draw connections between this strategic framework and other literatures, such as civic wealth creation and the entrepreneurial state, thereby enriching the discourse on public value generation. Their paper provides a detailed exploration of how strategic management practices in social enterprises can enhance public value and civic wealth creation. They illustrate this with a real case example of the Italian social enterprise PizzAut, which successfully integrates autistic people into society by producing and selling pizzas. By advancing a multi-actor theory of public value co-creation and conceptualizing new models of government-social enterprise relations, Sancino and Calo make a significant contribution to the field. Their work paves the way for innovative strategic interventions that can transform governance and enhance public value through collaborative and entrepreneurial arrangements. We are glad to invite contributions to the special issue "Co-design and Social Innovation for Climate Neutrality" of the journal "Sustainability" with Francesca Rizzo| Deadline August 13th. Climate neutrality is an urgent and complex challenge that cannot be reached with top-down technological solutions alone but requires multidisciplinary knowledge and citizens-centered solutions for systemic change. Social innovation is increasingly valued for its transformative role in promoting people-centered approaches through co-designing solutions for the systemic change of socio-cultural systems. Departing from technological solutions and top-down policymaking, user-centered solutions and services requires the involvement of networks of actors and the ability to co-design solutions, learn from experimentation through appropriate and relevant assessment methodologies. The aim of the Special Issue is to foster a discussion of the role of co-design and social innovation, service design and policy design for reaching carbon neutrality through a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach. We welcome papers based on theoretical, qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods studies which reflect and provide evidence of the relevance and need of considering design approaches and people-centered solution to reduce GHG emissions. In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but not limited to) the following topics: -Co-design and social innovation impact measurement, impact pathways, indicators and SDGs -Design for transition -Case studies and best practices of co-design and social innovation projects for climate neutrality at urban, reginal, and national level. -Sense-making and learning from large-scale experimental sustainability projects -People-centered evidence-based policy design for climate neutrality Indicators of behavioral change for sustainability -Citizens’ participation and public service co-design for climate change -Design of communications and reporting of social and environmental impact of projects and policies for sustainability -Co-design and social innovation in circular economy -Participatory design, co-creation, inclusive design for sustainability and wellbeing. Research in this area can contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in particular to climate action (SDG 13), by promoting sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11) and responsible consumption (SDG 12), through partnerships (SDG 17) with the final goal to increase health and wellbeing for all (SDG 3), as well as to the New European Bauhaus – the interdisciplinary initiative connecting the European Green Deal to living spaces and experiences.

This paper examines the policy impact of increased funding on the efficiency of Italian universities. 📉 Our results show that while production efficiency has remained relatively stable over the years, the post-COVID-19 period is characterised by a statistically significant decrease in cost efficiency. This work is a part of the EFFEct Project under #HorizonEurope, a multidisciplinary research project that aims to investigate how scarce public resources can be invested in #education in the most efficient and cost-effective way.
