Shoutout to my podcast partner Sonali Gupta for sticking her head for this one. The first part is focusing on the incumbent government, the #BJP, #modikiguarantee My overall take is that its a very weak set of promises with a lot of ambiguity with no real vision for sports development in the country. The biggest hindrance to the growth of a new and upcoming industry is the #GST. Sports goods are subjected to 12% GST but this does not include equipment for routine physical activity, which is subjected to 28% GST and sports coaching and services is subjected to standard 18% GST. While the Modi Government says they want to promote sports development and support sports start-ups, their policies are counterintuitive. With sports still being a tertiary interest for most in the country and yet being a great revenue and employment generator, a serious look must be given to the policies being defined for this sector. India’s growing sports ecosystem needs political stability No matter who comes up trumps in the great political game today, India sports will hope for a stable government so that recent progress can be sustained. I am not a political commentator, and politics isn’t my domain. And this isn’t a political piece, by any stretch of imagination. At the same time, it is important to state that from the standpoint of Indian sport, a stable government at the centre would make a huge difference. Indian sport is on the cusp, and Paris 2024 could well be a watershed Olympics for us all in India. The world is interested in the India story, and a good Olympics and Paralympics could help Indian sport turn the corner. A stable government would mean the political class will back the event and be in a position to use sport as soft power. Athletes will be feted and backed, and the Olympic cause given a much-needed fillip. A government in no danger of collapse would also mean the news media moves on from the elections and trains its attention on the Olympics, giving the event its due. Once a government is sworn in and left to the business of ruling the country, other events can take centre stage. There could be public fatigue from consuming toxic political rhetoric, exit polls and the like, and matters other than politics would get much-deserved airtime. All of this will, however, change if there is political instability in New Delhi. Daily bickering and back-channel parleys will mean nothing else matters. The Olympics and Paralympics, less than two months away, will hardly get the coverage they deserve. With India expected to win over 30 medals in the Paralympics and 10 in the Olympics, a stable government would mean the leadership appropriates the rhetoric of success and runs with it. It would be the India-shining story on the global stage, and add considerably to the growing acceptance of Olympic sport in India. The sports ecosystem, much like every other sector, is waiting with keen interest as to what happens today. Sponsors who put money into sport have held their cards close to their chests, and haven’t committed much yet. A strong market would mean more investment in sport, and that’s what you need when you are part of a growing ecosystem. In the last few years, Indian sport has turned a corner. We have seen state governments like Odisha make a huge difference by investing in sport. The same has now been done in Assam with the badminton Centre for Excellence. The national sports budget was added to, and the TOPS scheme has made a major difference to athletes’ prospects in major events. Political instability could scuttle all this. In contrast, a stable political set-up would mean sport takes centre stage in the coming months, and the India story is viewed globally through a very different prism. So, as we all stay glued to election results today, my only wish is for stability. The people have decided. May the best team win.

The future is bright for Indian sports Part II - The Samaaj Continuing from my previous post on building the Indian sports ecosystem https://lnkd.in/g2bZX7ik The landscape of sports in Indian society, or “Samaaj,” is witnessing a positive transformation fueled by a growing middle class and increased disposable income. This shift has led to a rise in organized sports activities, marked by a surge in cricket and badminton academies, as well as increasing participation in traditionally elite sports like golf and tennis. The enthusiasm of parents in fostering their children’s sporting potential, coupled with greater awareness of physical fitness and improved nutrition, suggests that this upward trend will continue. However, the journey ahead is fraught with challenges. To cultivate a vibrant sporting culture, several key areas need improvement. Firstly, sports should be woven into the fabric of Indian culture. A global study highlights that countries like Norway and Sweden boast high participation rates, fostering a natural affinity for multiple sports among youth. In contrast, most Indians still faces barriers to easy sporting access. This difference shows up starkly when we compare medals per capita in the Olympics. India holds significant untapped talent within its underprivileged communities, including the urban poor and rural populations. While their success is commendable, it is essential to recognize athletes across all levels of competition. Community and state-level tournaments deserve more support, as local recognition serves as a crucial motivator for athletes striving for excellence. Another concern is the financial viability of pursuing sports. Many athletes realize they may not be able to reach elite levels or to acquire employable skills for a decent job after sport, forcing early drop-outs from sports. This reality underscores the need for a systemic change in how sports are valued and supported, beyond just those who achieve fame and fortune. We will discuss the pivotal roles of government and market in future posts. However, community support can drive meaningful and lasting change in creating a supportive environment for aspiring athletes. Back in 2019 I joined the Rajasthan Royals to lead on all things digital. The team were lagging massively behind their rivals and the growth across all channels was stagnant. The first challenge was to understand why there was a lack of growth and to create a digital strategy that would get buy in from the owners, leadership and wider team. One obstacle I faced was that the Royals had been using a high end agency for a few years (I won't name them). Each year they would create a campaign for the tournament. The output would be a brand strapline, song, advert, branding (mainly OOH), social content to build excitement before the IPL kicked off. The same formulaic approach year on year. I can remember sitting in the pitch with the agency, the campaign idea was ok, nothing ground-breaking, then we got to the costs. These were x3 more than the whole digital marketing budget for the entire year. I nearly spat out my chai. When reviewing the pitch, it was pretty clear to me, why would we risk spending so much on a campaign that was to build hype for a few weeks, when this money could be better invested into the whole digital teams output for the whole year. We could invest the campaign budget into the following; 👨‍🎨 Create new modern branding that's digital first 👫 Increase the digital team with creative talent so that the channels are busy 365 not just during the IPL 🎥 Double down on production, more cameras to capture more moments 🖱 Bring in motion control editors for short form and add more resource for long form edits 💸 Use software to track commercial content on social to provide an ROI 🏏 Bring in a content distribution platform to syndicate content through athletes and partners ☁ Create the campaign through the Royals in-house team and current content agency rather than pay an outside agency big bucks This may be controversial but campaigns in sport are rarely successful and they're quickly forgotten. A campaign should never impact the wider work a digital team performs all year round across social, product, email, partner activations, syndication etc. The unglamorous work done all year round compounds and adds so much more value than a one off campaign. Digital teams in sport on the whole are under resourced. Budget is everything within sport, spend it wisely.
