Who exactly is losing market share in the hotly contest grocery commerce? I thought it must be the now-not-so modern retail, but I'm not so sure. Zepto raised $665 Mn at a valuation of $3.6 Bn, and is in talks to raise $250 Mn more. And their cofounder and CEO Aadit Palicha recently commented that they can beat DMart - Avenue Supermarts Ltd on GMV in the next 12-18 months. Swiggy Instamart also is growing, and Blinkit is likely to be more valuable than their owner Zomato itself - so they are all doing well, even if Dunzo isn't. Sure, no idea what JioMart Digital is doing, but deep pockets. Same with Tata Digital and their weird assortment forced to converge on Neu. bigbasket.com is trying to unlearn and relearn, and it just might. And Flipkart Grocery and Amazon Fresh are also upping their game - launching faster deliveries, discounts, improved fill rates, and selection. So I wonder if it is the modern-trade players? The likes of More Retail Private Limited, Spencer's Retail, STAR BAZAR, and SPAR Retail that are suffering? The nearest Spencer's to me is definitely a sore sight, now reduced to a shell of it's former glory - I think they aren't even replenishing inventory now. And we all know what happened to Big Bazaar - Future Retail. But Dmart itself isn't doing half bad - with pareto presence in just 23 cities, and no presence in UP (except NCR), Bihar, and West Bengal, they have considerable headroom, still. And they haven't yet quite solved for ecommerce, so while The Ken says that they are lost, they may find their way, eventually? I also don't think that the real consumption is growing, if at all, it may even shrink with the K-growth. Thus, some one _is_ losing share. And if it is not modern trade, then is it the regional chains? The single kiranas? The corner-store? The hand-cart? I'm not entirely sure because this data is hard to organize, and get. Unicommerce is a standout company in more ways than one: * First ones to build a sizeable ARR (100 Cr, ~ 40% CAGR) and profitable at scale business (Bn shipments, $Bns in GMV) in India mostly focussing on developing geos; * Hit PMF very early in multi-channel seller fulfilment space, and built hero products like OMS & WMS; * Was a part of first Snapdeal | AceVector Group mafia start-ups, then acquired and then spun-off and groomed as a consistent compounder building a full suite of Ecomm Ops products; Honestly Unicommerce is one of the biggest enablers of Ecommerce in India, key leader from the Ecomm 1.0 cohort (2010-15 cos) n now a flag-bearer of India Saas for developing Geos! Super Saver Store: ₹799 minimum order, focused on bulk groceries like rice and vegetables, claiming the lowest prices in the area. The Super Saver Store’s UI is strikingly simple—prices are displayed above product images, with MRPs canceled out, similar to DMart. Founders focusing on category-specific Quick-Commerce (QC) should note: when Myntra/Nykaa launched, Flipkart/Amazon weren't operating in those categories. Also, e-commerce players are now venturing into quick commerce. They already know which individuals in which locations order what products and at what frequencies! I see no chance for category-specific QCs. I've noticed many VCs lamenting that 70% of new founders are pitching category-focused QC ventures. These founders seem inspired by broad-QC successes (Zepto/Blinkit/Instamart) and draw parallels to e-commerce, where broad players (Flipkart/Amazon) coexist with category specialists (Myntra/Nykaa). The VCs' concerns are valid, and many founders are missing the crucial point. When Myntra/Nykaa launched, they faced no competition from major e-commerce players. These category specialists captured significant market share before broader players entered. By then, they had built unique user experiences and strong brand recall. This helped them survive and thrive. Today, every broad QC (Zepto/Blinkit/Instamart) is raising crazy capital to expand. It's unlikely they'll leave room for category-focused players to establish themselves. Unless the broad QC players mess it up big time, I fail to see how category-focused QC players will make a dent. Additionally, the entry of established e-commerce players into quick commerce (like Flipkart with Minutes) complicates things. These players have years of data on which pincodes order what products, and at what frequencies. They are aware that you place an order for Vim liquid every month and a laptop every three years. You can also be confident that they will aggressively defend their key categories, such as electronics. New category-focused QC ventures will face significant challenges in competing with them. D2Cs (Mamaearth/Licious/Akshayakalpa) may succeed by targeting specific market segments that value unique attributes (organic, premium, etc.). However, they'll find it difficult to expand beyond their niche. Mass-market capture will remain a broad QC play. Thoughts?

Highlights: Amazon India has approached IPO-bound Swiggy for a potential deal involving its quick commerce business under Instamart, said three people aware of the matter. The development comes close on the heels of Swiggy confidentially filing draft documents with Sebi for Rs 10,414 crore ($1.25 billion) public offering, among the largest for a new-age internet firm. The early discussions may not lead to a transaction considering the complicated structure of the deal in its present form, these people said. “Swiggy is unlikely to sell only its quick commerce business and Amazon won’t be interested in the food delivery space where growth is starting to plateau,” said the person cited above. Legacy ecommerce companies have been on a hunt to amp up their quick commerce play as the sector sees aggressive growth, challenging the likes of Amazon and Flipkart. Swiggy’s Instamart, Zomato’s Blinkit and sole independent platform Zepto are the three leading firms in the segment, unsettling online platforms by expanding beyond grocery retail. ET reported June 25 that Flipkart had explored a similar deal with Swiggy last year but the talks fell through due to a valuation mismatch. Q-Commerce overtaking traditional e-commerce? Currently we are seeing a big boom in terms of the different SKUs being sold in Quick commerce apps like Zepto, Blinkit, etc. - Atomberg Technologies 's fans - Sony's PS5 - Samosa, Chai and what not - Digital Gold from Jar! Zepto is in talks to raise $300m for its broader ecommerce play. While Swiggy is preparing to file for an IPO this year, incumbent Flipkart is readying its entry into quick commerce. Zomato has invested $240 million in Blinkit over the last one year. Taking a step back, the lines between quick commerce and traditional e commerce have started to become increasingly blurred with QCom pretty much catering to every needs! Also, multiple reports suggest that QCommerce can potentially become bigger than traditional e commerce in India!  Case in point : According to Goldman Sachs, the valuation of Blinkit is greater than Zomato's core food delivery biz! Non-grocery boom in Q-Commerce: Categories including beauty, toys, health and electronics are witnessing robust sales growth on quick-commerce platforms overall. While the overall base for the new categories is still small, aggressive expansion by these players is starting to ensure a dominant presence for these categories. Plus AOV is higher which also comes with better margins, making it a win-win! Case in point: Zepto - 2x sales MoM in segments such as toys and electronics accessories - Beauty category expanded 3x QoQ - ~15% of Zepto’s $1.2bn annualised gross sales currently comes from non-grocery products (Source: Goldman Sachs) For several D2C quick commerce has become the fastest growth channel as well as the platform with highest customer engagement This is definitely a positive for the consumers and the Q-Commerce players, but is everything on the up and up?   As the demand for space on quick-commerce platforms skyrockets, niche D2C cos in segments like FMCG, beauty and personal care, and health and fitness are agreeing to pay a 30-45% commission on sales, besides shelling out on advertising and discounting on these Q-Com platforms. On top of the commissions, brands are also regularly spending around 20% of their total sales on ads on the platforms, and discounting their products by about 20-25% (totaling 60-70% revenue!). This is in stark contrast to the 10-20% commission that large FMCG cos pay these platforms reflecting the intense competition for visibility. The brand's scale and comparison with competitors are crucial considerations when it comes to new listings. On the positive side, smaller D2C brands have seen 40-60% total revenue coming from Q-Commerce compared to ~10-20% from traditional ecommerce, which is surprising! Zepto has reportedly wrapped up a deal to raise a funding of $340 Mn that will now value the quick commerce major at $5 Bn 👇 While initially Zepto planned to rake in $400 Mn in the current round, but now it has decided to cap the funding at $340 Mn. Of this amount, $250 Mn will come from General Catalyst, with Mars Growth contributing approximately $50 Mn. The remaining amount will be provided by existing backers. [MMT Appreciation Post] - MakeMyTrip’s Acquisition of Happay from Cred – My Take Cred saw travel as a natural extension of its business (overlapping customer segments) and acquired Happay to expand its offerings. Worth noting, Happay’s largest shareholder at the time was Sequoia (32%), which also backs Cred. Sequoia’s first investment in Happay dates back to 2015, so the 2021 acquisition likely had multiple layers at play. Happay didnt succeed in vertically integrating expense and travel management (TMC). Instead, they became a go-to expense solution partner for many TMCs. Here’s where things got interesting: Travel and expense management is all about 1) inventory 2) operational intensity 3) low margins. Points 2 and 3 didn’t align with Cred’s DNA—personal lending operates at a juicy 30%+ gross margin, while travel management hovers around 6–8%. and they strength was more prod + brand and not hardcore ops (aka swiggy/zomato). Meanwhile, MakeMyTrip was quietly strengthening its enterprise game. They acquired Quest2Travel during the pandemic (talk about timing!) and also re-wrapped their B2C product as MyBiz for solopreneurs, CAs, SMEs. The missing link for enterprise customers? Expense management. Happay acquisition—brilliantly filling that gap. Those who know me know how much respect I have for MMT as a brand. Integrating acquisitions isn’t easy, yet they’ve successfully managed Goibibo, RedBus, Quest2Travel, Savaari, and now Happay. It’s also no secret that MMT has been lucky—no one in India has truly challenged them (Yatra or Cleartrip could’ve really given them a run for their money, or oyo could have nailed alternate acco). But guess, luck is hard work translated to glory :) the quality of MMT's execution is immense and no wonder they will nail this too. Personally, as an outsider, I’ve always had incredible support from MMT folks whenever I’ve had industry questions. They’re not just big—they’re big-hearted too. Watching them build a travel behemoth is inspiring to say the least! Who owns the Q-commerce race in India 💡? Yes, its Zepto. Zepto has been reportedly generating significant revenues, with some estimates (available in public domain) suggesting monthly revenues in the range of INR 150-200 Cr (about $18-24 Mn). Days back, the cofounders Aadit Palicha & Kaivalya V.'s platform took home a whopping $350 Mn, Zepto's third fundraise in just six months. Palicha in his interview, highlighted a few points those stood out. ➡️ Cost arbitrage: Relying on a super-meticulous execution & excellence approach, Palicha talked about how cost arbitrage proving a game changer in smaller cities, busting the #myth that #qcommerce is an urban phenomenon. Here, building a dark store, involving delivery professionals etc need less cost. Hence, the profitability per store incurs sooner than in metros. ➡️ Per store profitability than market share: The focus is on achieving per store profitability than capturing sizable market share or #profitability. He explained, achieving 1000 orders per day in cities including Vellore, Nashik, Kota etc takes lesser time than Mumbai. Because, people there don't get this wide range of 13, 000 to 14, 000 SKUs, hence, this popularity. ➡️ Disciplined investment: Zepto launched Zepto Cafe recently offering 10 Minutes food delivery options to Delhi, Bengaluru & Mumbai. And Palicha said they are investing hundred of crores in building this. To me its obvious that the platform is going to play its existing quick commerce customer base. Its no brainer, consumer who wants groceries within 10 minutes, would relish their evening snacks or breakfast coming along. So, yes, absolute brilliance over there 💪. ➡️ Quick commerce is not replacement for Kirana stores. We experienced it when #ecommerce had hit the consumption pattern. Now, its q-commerce that is taking the blame. However, my POV resonates what Plaicha explained. He said India's #grocey market has reached $46 Bn, hence if q-commerce is taking some $1 Bn, the rest $45 Bn is going to the Kirana store. So, no single business format replacing another.
