Mistakes in journalism can have dire consequences, potentially inflaming communal tensions. Sometimes, these errors are intentional, aimed at spreading hate and inciting conflict; other times, they are simply human errors. The recent dominance of the Indian media in shaping narratives has been both brutal and condemnable, driven by clear ill intentions, with numerous instances of blatant falsehoods. On the other hand, one example involves Reuters correspondent Ruma Paul. She reported quoting a police officer from Chittagong, who later denied making such comments. Moreover, her report inaccurately described a slain lawyer in Chittagong as representing a Hindu monk—a claim that has been debunked by several sources, including the interim government. In both instances, the necessity for accountability is clear. Accountability in journalism is essential. Reputable news organizations have guidelines that compel journalists to verify the information they disseminate. Therefore, it is both reasonable and necessary to expect Reuters and Ruma Paul to offer explanations and, if necessary, accept responsibility for their mistakes. Nevertheless, media professionals and people in the authorities must be careful not to foster an environment that endangers journalists like Ruma Paul, either online or offline. Online violence, particularly against female journalists, represents a severe threat to press freedom today. This includes not just verbal assaults but also threats to personal safety, doxxing, and sexualized violence, all aimed at silencing and marginalizing female journalists. This surge in targeted attacks aims to intimidate, silence, and stigmatize women journalists, potentially restricting their participation in public discourse. It's crucial to understand and address online abuse, as it directly impedes women journalists' ability to exercise their right to free expression. I urge those in power and my peers in journalism to exercise caution and ensure that they avoid contributing to a climate that might encourage violence against journalists. #bangladesh #journalism #freepress #india

Drone Warfare in Manipur: Bomb Attacks Escalate Violence, Raise National Security Concerns and Geopolitical Tensions   Readmore: https://lnkd.in/duahj4au The northeastern state of Manipur, which has been a flashpoint for ethnic and communal violence for years, has witnessed a significant escalation in conflict with two separate drone bomb attacks in the Koutruk and Senjam Chirang areas of Imphal West district. These attacks, which occurred over consecutive days, resulted in the deaths of two people, including a woman, and left 12 others injured. The use of drone bombs marks a troubling new chapter in the region's ongoing violence, raising serious concerns about national security and the involvement of external actors. The Role of Drug Cartels The northeastern region of India, particularly Manipur, is part of the Golden Triangle, a region notorious for drug production that includes parts of Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos. The government’s crackdown on drugs between 2022 and 2023, combined with the lack of proper border fencing in Manipur, is a key reason behind the ongoing unrest. India’s efforts to secure the border with fencing have faced resistance, with some citing tribal rights and the need for free movement across the border. Currently, the area along the border, 5-10 kilometers on either side, remains a free-flow zone where drug production and cultivation continue. The recent crackdown by the BJP-led government on drug trafficking in Manipur has likely played a role in the escalation of violence. The government has seized significant amounts of drugs and destroyed large swathes of poppy fields used for drug cultivation.  When the crackdown began, government data shows that drugs worth ₹6,000 crores were seized. Along with this, 200 hectares of land used for drug cultivation were destroyed. A total of 366 cases were registered, leading to the arrest of 2,000 individuals on narcotics charges, with bail being denied to many of them. These actions have likely provoked a violent response from those involved in the drug trade. The involvement of international drug cartels, possibly supported by figures like George Soros, adds another layer of complexity to the situation. Soros has been accused of funding various movements around the world, including those in Myanmar, and his involvement in the region raises questions about the true motives behind the violence.
