Mazagon Dock (MAZDOCK) is just took off to high with a market cap of ₹1,12,654 crore and a stock price of ₹5,585. However, its intrinsic value of ₹1,159.69 and DCF value of ₹1,274.48 suggest potential overvaluation. Cochin Shipyard (COCHINSHIP.NS) is flying to record high with a market cap of ₹70,504 crore and a stock price of ₹2,680. However, its intrinsic value of ₹1,300 and DCF value of ₹1,400 suggest potential overvaluation. This could indicate a potential bubble, as the current price might not be sustainable if the company's earnings don't meet these high expectations. What can FM gift to SMEs? Today, MSMEs are smart and competing with large corporations across various sectors. A prime example is the F&B industry, with companies like Paperboat, Bira 91, Licious, and Yogabar. MSMEs are not seeking subsidies or Production Linked Incentives (PLIs). For every successful startup we hear about, many others disappear. As someone who serves on the boards of several startups, I see that their challenges are multifold: 1. Permits and Licenses: Obtaining basic permits and licenses can take an exorbitant amount of time, ranging from months to years, even for non-invasive medical devices, simple drones, GeM registration, and trademarks. The Finance Ministry could create a simple single-window system exclusively for startups. 2. Compliance Hurdles: Startups, like babies, need support from the system. Currently, these young companies must compete with well-resourced established companies. The Finance Ministry should simplify compliance regulations for startup private limited companies to be as simple and straightforward as those for proprietary companies. 3. Incubation Centers: When I started an operation in Gothenburg, Sweden, a few years ago, the Mayor’s office provided us with a free office in a world-class development center, free audit services from E&Y for a year, and free legal services for a year. They also introduced us to top companies there. Singapore offers similar facilities. While we have various organizations and industrial development corporations, they are often too confusing and operate like profit centers. 4. CGTMSE: This scheme is intended to help startups (MSMEs) secure credit facilities without collateral. However, 90% of startups do not benefit from it. The scheme excludes pre-money startups, non-profitable startups, and those without a two-year banking relationship, effectively excluding 90% of startups. The government should establish a mechanism for evaluating idea-level and pre-money startups. 5. Confusing Schemes: There are numerous schemes, but startups lack clarity on which ones to apply for and which ministries offer what. The government should set up a startup guidance cell in each state and outsource its management to companies like TCS for effective implementation. #financeministry #budget #schemes #cgtmse #startups #pmo

Startup have surely new ideas and risk taking ability. Large companies and established MSME have deeper understanding and maturity of the market and some financial stability. Looking at the reputation and fear of board approvals some of the new ideas are not taken forward . In such cases global participation and satisfaction with few assemblies in India is what is preferred by such companies. It does not give a big return on investment but it is considered as safe. Government is trying to encourage unicorns and helping them with seed money which may last for only few months. Till the time TRL is crossed beyond 4-5 level no investor will take a big risk. The rate at which you need funds and efforts is very high in the initial few months or years but at this stage crossing TRL beyond 4-5 is difficult unless academic development and some concept proving has been established. Academic focus till today and even now is more on fundamental research, transactional research is now coming up like startup’s are coming up. Academia is more worried on PhD and publications than product. R&D labs are struggling for funds and maintaining establishments and most important is large canvas on which they are required to work. Public recruitment has limit and private participation has trust deficit. Everyone in this loop is right and justified but we need to break the vicious circle. Who will take lead and how the circle ⭕️ or ball will start rolling. In such cases can we form a cluster in the regional nodal agencies with presence of private public participation with R&D labs, academic institutions, startup’s, MSME and each of this cluster shall be given a task to develope and produce for Indian repents first and for the global requirements parallel. I recommended NITI aayog to take lead and create such clusters with financial participation from each stage holder and private equity partner and establish it as SPV and monitor it for national benefit. Just do not like or dislike but share your views.

The slowdown in India's GDP growth to 6.7% in the April-June 2024 quarter, the lowest in 15 months, has been attributed primarily to reduced government spending. This reduction in spending is linked to the enforcement of the model code of conduct during the Lok Sabha elections, which constrained both central and state government expenditures. key sectors continued to grow at rates exceeding 7%, however, the agriculture sector where more than 75% people are employed, underperformed, with growth slowing to just 2%, exacerbating the overall GDP slowdown. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das optimism is good, but the scenario raises concerns about the sustainability of economic growth, especially given the high level of public expenditure on subsidies and welfare schemes, which might be straining the government's fiscal capacity. This slowdown highlights the need for more transparent and accurate fiscal data, which is critical for maintaining the credibility of institutions like the RBI. Slowdown is currently attributed to temporary factors like election-related spending cuts, the underlying fiscal health and the reliance on welfare expenditures may pose challenges to achieving sustained economic growth. How do we ensure Indigenous Product capability. Key to this would be to first analyse what are we lacking ? In the entire chronology of building a product from requirement - design - supply chain procurement - integration - testing - protytping - certification - demonstration and procurement, how are our various govt agencies placed to identify and mitigate issues? Earlier this June 25, the Ministry's Department of Defence Production (DDP) issued a letter to key industry bodies, including FICCI, Assocham, and the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM), urging them to warn their members about the risks of using Chinese parts. (Source: Economic Times) Let's take the case for #DroneIndustry is it even viable for the procurement agencies to think that just by banning something they can really stop the usage ? Unless there is a complete overhaul in the procedure that was mentioned earlier about the chronology of building the product, all of this knee jerk reactions might not yield what we want to achieve.
