PM Overload: Why India’s Product Managers Are Facing an Identity Crisis . . India's tech landscape is buzzing with an influx of aspiring Product Managers (PMs). But with abundance comes competition, and with competition, the inevitable rise of shortcuts and quick-fix courses. The question is: Are PMs in India at risk of becoming the next wave of digital marketers—plentiful but diluted in quality? The numbers game: (Src: Edureka, Payscale) Associate Product Managers (APMs): 30,000 - 50,000 Product Managers: 100,000 - 120,000 Senior Product Managers: 30,000 - 40,000 Group Product Managers: 8,000 - 10,000 With over 150,000 active and aspiring PMs across various levels, the competition is fierce. This isn’t just a battle for jobs; it’s a race to stand out in a sea of resumes. The rise in numbers isn’t surprising, given the multitude of industries now embracing product management roles. From technology and e-commerce to healthcare and manufacturing, companies are hiring PMs to steer their product strategy. Companies in the Game (Source: foundit India): Technology (Software, IT Services, Fintech): 1,500 - 2,000 companies E-commerce & Retail: 400 - 600 companies Banking & Financial Services: 300 - 500 companies Manufacturing & Industry: 200 - 300 companies Healthcare & Pharmaceuticals: 100 - 200 companies But here’s where it gets tricky. With so many opportunities, the demand for quick certifications and crash courses has surged, leading to a proliferation of product management programs. There are currently around 120 to 130 courses available across India, catering to the aspiring PM crowd (Source - upGrad KnowledgeHut, PremierAgile) But here's the catch: Not all PM courses are created equal. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of PM Courses Not all PM courses are created equal. While some programs provide in-depth knowledge and real-world experience, others might be little more than glorified PowerPoint presentations. Aspiring PMs need to tread carefully—choosing the wrong course could mean wasting time, money, and ultimately, stalling their career progression. The abundance of PMs in India is both an opportunity and a challenge. As the competition heats up, so does the pressure to be better, faster, and more qualified. But in this race, it’s essential not to lose sight of what truly matters—gaining real skills and experience that go beyond certifications. The approximate number of aspiring Product Managers in India is around 30,000-50,000, with many individuals enrolled in APM programs and transitioning from other fields. What explains the High & Low of Product Management? Maybe this series of events 👇🏽 1. 2020 - 2022: Orgs went on a frenzy of hiring PMs due to inflated market demand, and easy money amid COVID. 2. This made Product Management popular, more jobs, and a lot of work in market. This led to inflow of influencers, content creators, b-schools, bootcamps who started fuelling this category. 3. Post 2022: Now the winter came post covid (it all started with Google, Amazon, Meta layoffs). The influencers, content creators, bootcamps who were there to make quick money, now moved to more exciting things like AI, Prompt Engineering, Side Hustles, Productivity etc. Afterall, Going deep into PM as a content creator, isn't easy, they realized. Bootcamps are now diversifying into coding, DS, & other alternates. 4. The genuine demand from people who want to learn the craft of product management is still there, people who were originally creating content to help PMs are still there & helping people. If I could name a few of them: Deepak Singh, Diego Granados, Dr Bart Jaworski, Anuj Rathi, Vikrama Dhiman, Anshumani Ruddra, Liam Bolling, Malthi SS (Product Coach), and more. Learnings: If you are a content creator be ready for the up & down of industry and be an expert at what you create. You can't fake expertise. If you are a BootCamp: Please solve real problems of learning the PM craft and not just interview prep. Long term > Short Term. If you are an aspiring PM: Please have a genuine/real motivation to get into PM and not just go with what is trending. All great PMs today, started when PMing wasn't so cool. PM is a critical part of any organization and is here to stay, but inflated demand and short-term thinking won't stay for long. #productmanagement

The best product managers are those who know how to balance user experience, tech and business in the most basic form. But hear me out, I believe that most PMs have biases towards a particular side. This bias may be based on factors like personal experience, previous career experience, personal values amongst others. Here is what I mean, someone who transitioned from a business background might always think about the business side with their first thought being “How does this benefit the business” while someone from a customer experience background may always scream “How can we make it easier for the user” As I already mentioned, the super power is in finding a balance. For me, my bias leans toward the User experience. One could say I personalize the term “mouthpiece of the user” and you can say it is because I transitioned from a customer support background and also because I detest bad experiences myself; be it in person, virtual etc. I hate when things do not work as they should But knowing this bias is just the start. The real challenge is stepping outside of it to consider all aspects of the product. For me, that means constantly reminding myself to think about the other sides of things, even when my instinct is to focus on the user. It’s a balancing act that requires a lot of collaboration with other teams to ensure we’re covering all the important angles. Ultimately, great product management is about being flexible. It’s knowing when to lean into your strength and when to rely on others to fill in the gaps. By doing that, we create products that not only make users happy but also move the business forward. As a Product Manager, tracking metrics across the user journey is crucial. Key metrics at different stages include acquisition, activation/onboarding, engagement, retention, revenue/conversion, referral, and customer satisfaction. Which of these metrics do you manage?

🌟 This is all you need to write the Perfect PRD. The mistake I have seen many Product managers including myself do is in order to move with velocity we jump hops to solution which often leads to low grade solutions. As Anuj Rathi said that, "You have to diverge before you converge" That take room where you dive deep into problems and understand it fully however I don't blame you as we are bombarded by other stakeholders to deliver fast. The following is my go to Mantra which I try to follow. 1. Understand the problem fully 2. Collect evidences of the scale 3. Who is the user of this problem or this is just an internal request 4. Validate with your users 5. Go into an idea space 6. Effort and Impact Analysis 7. Talk with everyone and take their inputs 8. Then give a timeline - I often make mistake on these 9. Co-Work and think end to end for launch 10. LAUNCH and Monitor!! That's it, but it's not that easy. It is scrappy, messy and confusing at the same time. Having a structure is very important. I cannot share how proud and happy I feel to read such principles and practices of #productmanagement are followed in India. Please find in the comments an essay by the Product Head of an application I loved to use during backpacing in India - redBus. Here are some golden words from the essay - 1. Defining the Product Vision is actually an 'aha-moment'. 2. Right Product Vision makes the purpose crystal clear, which in turn helps to define right scope and what to prioritise - it becomes one thing to refer to for every decision. 3. A roadmap defines what the product will achieve in next 6-12 months. 4. Building together vibe - "We will then discuss the feature among a small group that includes folks from product, analytics, design and engineering. The details of the feature are discussed and debated" 5. Product Management is science - "I’m a big fan of A/B experiments and have many running at the same time" 6. A good PM knows how to do work in parallel processing - "You will notice how each team is working in parallel and not waiting for the other. This saves a lot of time and delivers speed" 7. On documentation - "Once we have everything finalized, the product team will document everything so that everyone is referring to one source of truth." 8. On Launch/UATs - "You’ll always have something that will go wrong at the right time. Factor this in" 9. Measuring what matters - "Dashboards around the feature are formalized and automated" 10. Writing a "perfect" PRD is a myth... There are at least 100s of PRD templates out there and every product expert on LinkedIn is selling their own version, making the amateur PMs feel that is the recipe of success as a PM. Let me break the truth to you-- There are no perfect PRD templates, and I think all experienced PMs can agree to it. PRD is just one another way for you to communicate your thought process to others, that's it, that's all the job it has to do.
