In today's fast-paced corporate world, leadership plays a pivotal role in the success and growth of an organization. But what happens when leadership goes wrong? Bad management? Today, I want to touch on the age-old saying, "People don't leave companies, they leave managers." In my recent conversation with Mr. Sukumar Sekhar, a seasoned leader with decades of experience, we touched upon this topic. Sukumar firmly believes that while there may be monetary, career, and personal reasons for individuals leaving an organization, the most prominent one often is their immediate manager. In his banking operations career spanning 25 years, Sukumar has seen a plethora of people managers. He categorizes them into four buckets. According to him, 50% of managers are bad, genuinely ruining careers. 40% are good, not bothering you but not helping you progress either. About 9% are great managers who give their team members wings to fly and are supportive, kind, and approachable. But it's only about 1% of managers who are true leaders, the ones who inspire absolute trust and blind faith. Sukumar advises, if you find yourself working with a leader, stick around. Don't leave them, because such leaders are rare gems. The difference between a manager and a leader? A leader is approachable, unbiased, protective, and genuinely cares for their team. They are the ones who create a nurturing environment for their team members to flourish. A leader understands the difference between education, qualification, and success, and helps their team members realize the same. They help their team members leverage their education and qualification to achieve success. Leadership is not just about directing; it's about connecting at a human level, understanding the challenges, aspirations, and dreams of your team members, and supporting them in their journey. It's about instilling trust and fostering an environment of respect, value, and importance. Remember, we are all in the people business first. Sachindranath Chatterjee: Pioneering Education and Shaping South Kolkata's Future: Sachindranath Chatterjee was a visionary entrepreneur who played a pioneering role in shaping the educational landscape of South Kolkata. In an era when educational infrastructure in the region was still evolving, he recognized the critical need for accessible, quality education and set out to establish schools that catered to a growing urban population. His work laid the foundation for what would become a thriving educational ecosystem in this part of the city. Chatterjee’s schools were not just institutions of learning—they were models of progressive education, reflecting his deep understanding of the changing needs of society. His approach was holistic, emphasizing not only academic rigor but also the development of character, creativity, and social responsibility. The CII Education Conclave 2024 was a deeply fulfilling experience and an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations about Kerala’s higher education ecosystem. As someone who deeply values industry-academia collaboration, this event reinforced how crucial it is to create real-world opportunities for students. At Acsia, we’ve seen firsthand how bridging these two worlds helps not just businesses, but the larger ecosystem thrives. Smt. Ishita Roy IAS, Principal Secretary, Department of Higher Education, captured it perfectly when she said that Kerala needs a tailored construct. Unlike other states with a strong industrial presence, Kerala’s unique challenges demand a different approach. The government must play the role of a facilitator, enabling industries and academia to collaborate effectively. This isn’t just about creating jobs; it’s about ensuring that all institutions and students — beyond the top-tier colleges — have access to meaningful opportunities. Dr. Usha Titus, IAS (Rtd), Chairperson of ASAP Kerala, highlighted a point that truly resonated with me: the critical role of structured internships. These programs don’t just help students — they prepare industries for the future. Real-world learning is invaluable, and internships provide the perfect bridge between the classroom and the workplace. A proud moment during the event was the release of the Internship Checklist, a guide to support companies in creating impactful internship programs. It’s a step toward addressing the disconnect between academic learning and industry needs — a step I hope many companies will take. As we commemorate India’s 78th Independence Day, it is an opportune moment to reflect on our nation’s remarkable journey of growth and development. From the stroke of midnight on 15th August 1947, when we came together as a nation with one destiny, to today where we have set our sights on a Viksit Bharat, India has come a long way. Back then we were a predominantly agrarian economy. Today, we are the fastest growing major economy in the world; and are slated to be a USD 7 trillion economy by 2030. The world is watching this ascent as we take forward strides with landmark development policies, a thrust on self-reliance, a thriving start-up ecosystem, technological innovation, robust infrastructure and so much more.  Yet, our progress is not merely measured in economic terms. It is seen in the power of our cultural capital that finds admiration in far corners of the globe – be it our films, music, or art. Our scientific breakthroughs are held in high esteem – who can forget Chandrayaan-3 landing on the south pole of the moon last year! Further, the strength of our institutions, and the resilience of our democracy attest to our evolution as a nation.  However, the journey to Viksit Bharat will require us to reassess ourselves, and recalibrate our approach. What has got us here, will it get us there? In the 78 years since independence we have built the framework for our development, but it is what we do from today till 2047 that will truly count. Inclusive development will be a key factor propelling us forward, for it is when all of us are empowered to contribute can India realise her true potential. There’s much to be thought of and much to be done, and I hope today will serve as a catalyst for us to get our collective vision into motion. Happy 78th Independence Day!
