Recently I had an opportunity to speak at Indiantelevision.com #Vidnet Conference and below are my thoughts. #Attention spans are shrinking, and OTT platforms must act! To boost content consumption, we need to prioritize simplicity and user experience, taking a cue from traditional cable TV - plug and play, easy peasy! Let's focus on making customers' lives easy by: Building seamless platforms Enabling API access for aggregators Fostering collaboration across the OTT ecosystem Inspired by ONDC, let's think long-term: Make content available on aggregator platforms with direct streaming integration Embrace a cost-per-stream model, ensuring creators get paid for their everytime customers stream their content. Let's not focus solely on short-term revenue gains from MGs. Instead, build a robust cost-per-subscriber model, investing in world-class technology and solving distribution challenges by endless bundling opportunities. Remember, customers will pay for quality content. When I get asked, why is a localized brand approach so important for our members in India, we’ll, we Marketers need to understand that India presents some unique challenges and opportunities: Cultural Diversity: India is incredibly diverse in terms of culture, languages, traditions, and consumer behaviors. Brands often need to tailor their marketing strategies to resonate with local cultural nuances. Consumer Preferences: Indian consumers have unique preferences influenced by factors such as tradition, family values, and socio-economic status. Understanding these preferences is crucial for brands to develop marketing campaigns that appeal to the target audience. Regulatory Environment: India has specific regulations and guidelines for advertising, particularly concerning sensitive topics such as religion, gender, and health. Competitive Landscape: To stand out, international brands often need to differentiate themselves by understanding local market dynamics and consumer behavior. The 90s and early 2000s ad agency account executive are fortunate in many ways. Account management folks in the ad agency environment of the 90s and early 2000s learnt a lot from peers, seniors and clients. My take on various ways in which we benefited: Lots to learn from Manager, Boss and Super Boss. They led from the front whether it was selling creative, recommending strategy or fighting the good fight. Many had great persuasive skills in communication and ‘selling’ the idea or an investment plan. Some of them gave it back to clients when they ill-treated some of the agency juniors. They commanded respect from client-in-chief. When I got into a managerial role, I felt I was a shade of the bosses I had - Importance of writing skills. Those were the days of the memo. And written creative briefs. Media requisitions. All of it had to be written cogently. Seniors invested in writing & presentation skills workshops. So we learnt the art & importance of writing well.  - Presentation skills. We had to ‘sell’ campaigns, scripts, annual plans and such like aside from pitches. We observed how some of the great Creative Directors ‘planned’ and sold their ideas - it was mesmerising  - Cost of mistakes. PPTs were made on 35-mm slides or acetate sheets on Overhead Projectors (look it up on Google). So a typo discovered after the slide was made, meant running to the vendor again. An error in a printed ad (I have had my share) meant a make-good which went from the agency’s pocket. Checking copy word-for-word against an original or through someone else was common. So prevention is better than cure was practiced. What else would you add if you had your advertising basics from back then? #advertising

Came across this on X. Was reminded of the familiar scenario when in advertising. Someone from the client side would question the need for advertising with arguments like 'did Google build the brand through advertising?' not realizing that not all companies have Google-like products. Similarly with a ground-breaking product and cult following this brand can afford to go light on the bells & whistles. Not your regular floor cleaner or a regular service brand - they need to create assets that break the clutter. OpenAi has a product that does that.
