One of the most common mistakes of early career content marketers is “one-of-everything” content. You get a list of user types or uses cases from your sales and product team, and then give one piece of content for each item on the list. This seems like a logical approach. It gives you good coverage, it creates lots of sales support material, and helps internal politics because you don’t have to say no to anything. It also makes it easy to pick content topics - whatever is next on the list However, you are not going to break through with anyone. Each audience will get a thin introductory-level blog post. That will not build fame or affinity. One note to add that’s not in the video: this is also an SEO sin. Your domain will be unlikely to develop topical authority. These days, you need a critical mass related content to really rank in search results on any competitive topic. Instead of one-of-everything strategy, focus on making great content for one group. Some may be thinking about mass marketing - shouldn’t we be maximizing reach? Yes, but you don’t achieve mass marketing by creating one piece of content for each segment. This is especially true for small content teams - you will never generate enough content to build fame across every segment one-by-one. You achieve broad fame by creating content that is compelling to a wide group. That's not easy to do of course, but that's the truth.

The old vs the new way to content-led growth. A decade ago, the content was all about one thing; driving as much traffic to the blog. Every content marketing revolved around SEO and blog distribution. On a session at Demand Curve, Amanda from SparkToro and Jimmy from Superpath hopped on a call with Ian, MD, Bell Curve to share; - The new way to content-led growth - In-house content marketer skills - How to think about product-led content - Content metrics to track - Morden content strategy First, owning a blog is a given, distributing its content is surface level. Content-led growth has evolved beyond text; - PR - podcast - digital events (video) - communication ( internal, & external) When Elon mentioned plans to acquire X, there were discussions on fake accounts. Amanda and the team from SparkToro delved into their audience and found that nearly 20% of their account followers were fake. Even Elon highlighted their research. This PR, ( trendjacking efforts) resulted in over 500 mentions and SparkToro ranked 1-3 on audience research. Second, leveling up as a content marketer from a specialist per se to a generalist will come in handy. The era of outsourcing content production will skills like vendor management & experiences in the following; -- Hosting and growing a podcast - video production ( digital events motions) - interviewing teams for thought leadership content Third, the path to product-led content has to come from a Job-to-done angle. And should involve a couple of these teams; - sales team - content team - product teams The goal is to stay close to the product.
