The Indian Gen AI prosumer, consumer landscape still remains early – Companies have hit power users but are subscale OR have low % of paying users  • Companies do not have enough cohort level data to indicate product love  • Most cos who have managed to cross few hundred thousand users (MAU) are building their US GTM machine  • They have a rudimentary hallucination check AND a rudimentary RLHF in place We at Chiratae ventures are keen to look at – 1) Vernacular AI assistants - Sarvam, Krutrim are foundational model (Sarvam – OpenHathi) based general intelligence assistants very similar to Anthromorphic or Poe, but contextualized to India. They have raised significant capital, but the space remains open still. 2) Vernacular AI search – We do not have a Perplexity, Liner for the Indian vernacular. This is a potential whitespace. We will look for a solid team, with a solid product roadmap. AI-powered blue-collar recruitment platform Vahan.ai has raised $10 Mn (INR 83.7 Cr) in a Series B funding round led by existing backer Khosla Ventures.  The round also saw participation from Y Combinator, Gaingels and Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma among others 👇 The latest round takes the startup’s cumulative funding to $18 Mn till date, including $8 Mn and an undisclosed amount raised in 2021 and 2019, respectively. Vahan seeks to use the fresh money to develop its AI recruitment technology, which will support eight major Indian languages, including Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Marathi, Bangla and Gujarati. This article is telling. Indian investors and startups have always prioritised money over genuine innovation via R&D. No wonder we lag far behind in original technology and business ideas despite having one of the largest startup ecosystem. In AI, focus and investment on innovation via R&D will bring much better financial rewards in the long run. We have to get over the jugaad and ‘quick buck’ mindset to make India truly a force in technology. Many countries in ME, SEA and EU, apart from USA, China, Japan and Korea, are investing heavily in development of AI solutions and infrastructure. Unless we change now, we will be left far behind. As friend Kshitij Sharma says, if investors in India don’t have apetite for R&D, invest in the stock market. 130k Startups are registered under DPIIT in India. But how many get on to a growth/hyper scale path? A startup status doesn't mean anything to a VC until there is a Massive growth potential. Does 100x growth in valuation sound difficult to imagine? Not really. T0 - invest X T1 - next round at 5x T2 - next round at 5x T3 - next round at 5x Your investment now would have become 100+x adjusted for dilution. shorter time intervals would fetch an amazing IRR. If the founder does the spreadsheet and he never gets the possibility to make such growth in the next round, you are out of a VCs sweet spot. That doesn't mean what you are building is bad. It's just not enough for inorganic growth. When you build the spreadsheet, remember that the best capital is always the customer's capital and never compromise it for VC money. #venturecapital #vc #angleinvesting #startups

Another notable thing from the new Budget: Space sector gets 1000 cr ($120M) VC Fund allocation. This is a very important signal, even though the numbers are small in the context of capital requirement by the sector. I am a big believer of India owning the space sector worldwide over time in a manner similar to how we have owned the Technology services market. The talent pool and infrastructure (thanks to ISRO), emerging technologies around miniaturization, and evolving supply chain makes it one of the few spaces where India has a ‘right to win’. Strongly recommend more Entrepreneurs to participate in this area. Given the high capital requirements in the initial days (before monetization), it is a hard place for VCs to play but we will see innovation in capital structure over time (the Government allocation being one such evolution). And I am not only saying this, I actually brought a company to our Investment Committee (where I am also a member) making a case for Investment. Enterprise tech startup Clueso (YC W23) has raised $1.4 Mn (about Rs 11.6 Cr) in its seed funding round, led by f7 Ventures. The round also saw participation from existing backer Y Combinator. Clueso leverages generative AI (GenAI) to help companies create instructional videos and documentation for employee training and customers. Clueso claims that its AI auto-removes fumbling and rewrites the transcript to cover the same content 60% of the time and replaces the audio track with a “professional, natural-sounding AI voiceover”. Besides, it also creates a written article for every video with screenshots and GIFs. Clueso was also selected in the winter cohort of Y Combinator’s early-stage startup accelerator program in April 2023. With its participation in the three-month-long initiative, the startup netted an investment of $500K. The fundraise comes at a time when the Indian GenAI market is heating up in terms of investments.
