Authored Chapters and as contributors to all chapters (text and cases) across the Handbook. Specific focus was on "Finding the right price" and "Managing and accessing Sustainable Inputs". Released the book in Himachal Pradesh valedicted by the Chief Minister of the state for implementing Sustainable Food Systems for Natural Farming (SuSPNF).

    Excerpt Abstract -
Sustainable food systems are fundamental to ensuring that future generations are food
secure and eat healthy diets. To transition towards sustainability, many food system
activities must be reconstructed, and myriad actors around the world are starting to act
locally. While some changes are easier than others, knowing how to navigate through
them to promote sustainable consumption and production practices requires complex
skill sets. This handbook is written for “sustainable food systems innovators” by a group
of innovators from Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe who are leading initiatives to
grow, share, sell and consume more sustainable foods in their local contexts. It includes
experiences that are changing the organizational structures of local food systems
to make them more sustainable. The handbook is organized as a “choose your own
adventure” story where each reader – individually or in a facilitated group – can develop
their own personalized learning and action journeys according to their priorities. The
topics included in this handbook are arranged into three categories of organizational
innovations: engaging consumers, producing sustainably, and getting products to market.

  • Reform the standards for organic livestock farming for small & marginal farmers – a critique of current standard norms for animal based organic foods in India

    IFOAM-OI, Organic World Congress, India

Presented Paper at IFOAM - World Organic Congress 2017

The present standard for animal based organic foods in India appears to have been written with the premise that it has to be in harmony with the organic standards in the European Union and United States of America, where livestock farming systems are entirely different from that of India. The Agriculture Census 2010-11 of India reported that about 67% of the total farmers were marginal with average 0.4 hectare of farm land and 18%…

The present standard for animal based organic foods in India appears to have been written with the premise that it has to be in harmony with the organic standards in the European Union and United States of America, where livestock farming systems are entirely different from that of India. The Agriculture Census 2010-11 of India reported that about 67% of the total farmers were marginal with average 0.4 hectare of farm land and 18% were small farmers with average land of 1.4 hectares. The milch animal holding is also small with 1-3 animals. This paper presents a critique of the organic standards under National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) that is required to be conformed to in India for Organic Livestock Farming. Thus, there is no commercially known certified organic dairy brand in India. This policy analysis, discusses the different issues in the standards and necessary changes are suggested based on the localized situations, cultural conditions and traditional practices.

Presented Paper at - IFOAM World Organic Congress 2017 - India

To ensure the long term welfare of all stakeholders (producers, intermediaries and
consumers) in food systems it is also important to consider the financial sustainability of
these systems. This paper addresses the specific financial aspect of managing prices and
considers if prices can capture all aspects of financial sustainability, through concepts like
‘true cost accounting’, ‘natural capital protocol’ etc. We discuss current research available is
this domain and explore various innovative mechanisms present in certain cases around the
world where sustainable food system actors challenge the current price determination
mechanism to find prices that represent the ‘true value’ of sustainable products. It then goes
into the principles which should be followed when managing prices, namely, that the
processes for managing prices should be both transparent and participatory. Different theories
such as ‘Disruptive Supply Demand method’ and ‘Energy Reduction to Pricing’ are proposed
as possible examples to enhance discussions in this field. Finally, challenges in developing
such pricing systems are examined with examples, which elucidate how these principles are
put into practice, and give possible opportunities to be considered as the way forward.

    Excerpt from Abstract -

'private sector and civil society actors are leading partnerships with
the public sector to build market infrastructure, integrate sustainable agriculture
into private and public education and extension programmes, and ensure the
exchange of transparent information about market opportunities. The results are:
    (i) system innovations that allow new rules for marketing and assuring the sustainable
qualities of products; (ii) new forms of organization that permit actors to play
multiple roles in the food system (e.g. farmer and auditor, farmer and researcher,
consumer and auditor, consumer and intermediary); (iii) new forms of market
exchange, such as box schemes, university kiosks, public procurement or systems of
seed exchanges; and (iv) new technologies for sustainable agriculture (e.g. effective
micro-organisms, biopesticides and soil analysis techniques). The public sector plays
a key role in providing legitimate political and physical spaces for multiple actors to
jointly create and share sustainable agricultural knowledge, practices and products'
