The #Budget FY 25 has been presented, and while it's encouraging to see the Indian government prioritizing #productivity and #climateresilience in #agriculture and #alliedsectors, it's disappointing to note the absence of any mention of #livestock. Livestock contributes approximately 25% of the total agricultural #GDP in low and middle-income countries (#LMICs), providing a vital livelihood source for hundreds of millions of poor people. However, livestock production faces significant threats from climate change, with rising temperatures and unpredictable #weather patterns drastically impacting how livestock feed, produce, and reproduce. In #India, the need for climate-resilient #dairying is urgent. As temperatures rise and weather becomes more erratic, traditional livestock management practices are increasingly challenged. Adaptation and resilience strategies are essential to ensure the sustainability of livestock farming, a cornerstone of rural livelihoods and the agricultural economy. The visualization on the screen is a joint production of SEBI Livestock, University of Edinburgh, The Centre for Tropical Livestock Genetics and Health (CTLGH), the @The Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Systems GAAFS at the University of Edinburgh, and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi, Kenya. These organizations are members of the Livestock Data for Decisions (#LD4D) Community. This comprehensive map highlights the adaptive measures livestock keepers globally are employing to build resilience against climate change. These initiatives highlight the need for continued government support for livestock, even though it was not addressed in the Budget FY 25. 

Extreme events take an enormous toll on Africa’s primary industries, including crop and animal agriculture, with the livestock sector alone losing $2 billion from drought. It would be preposterous to hold humanitarian sectors accountable for curbing climate change – let alone those that provide food and livelihoods for hundreds of millions amidst growing climate risks. By 2050, a quarter of the global population will be African, while the region already suffers from the highest prevalence of hunger and malnutrition in the world. "Changing Agricultural Systems Due to Climate Change" Climate change is one of the most discussed and debated issues in the world today. Due to the impact of climate change, radical changes are being observed in the environment, society, water, people's socio-social conditions as well as in the agricultural system. The sector most affected by climate change is agriculture. Rural small farmers today are disoriented. Cropland The land that once produced large amounts of food grains is now not producing crops. When we ask the farmers, why is there no crop in the land? Then their answers were, 1) Salinity 2) Flood 3) The amount of sand in the land is increasing day by day 4) Various insects, diseases. (which was not there before) 5) Climate change (such as no or excessive winters, no or excessive rains in monsoons, excessive heating in summers or lack of water needed for irrigation or lower ground water levels) Farmers are completely disoriented due to various diseases in the cropland, and small farmers today are free to use unnecessary and excessive pesticides without getting any income. At one time the land where paddy and jute were produced, today the farmers are not cultivating paddy and jute. The farmer who is cultivating rice in the land cannot guarantee that the farmer will be able to harvest the rice at home. Because the ripe rice in the field is burnt within 24 hours due to the attack of insects at any time in the paddy field. The farmer had never heard of this insect before and had never seen it. Did you know that cows and other livestock animals are responsible for about 40% of methane emissions? In digesting their high fiber diet, cows emit methane as a byproduct, making them one of the least climate friendly sources of food on the planet. Basically their fart is a huge contributor to global warming. Swiss startup Mootral found a way to tackle this issue: They created a feed supplement for the cattles. Mootral Ruminant, a natural feed supplement, enables the reduction of methane production in the digestive processes of cattle. This product is based on active compounds from garlic and flavonoids from citrus to inhibit the methanogen bacteria inside the rumen. Lab and farm testing results show a significant decrease in methane production without any compromise on cattle welfare and productivity.
