# Is sustainability an issue in Backyard Poultry rearing in central India? (plain)   # It is time to think, about changing the definition, strategy, and design for rearing backyard poultry Why: 🏠 Lack of Backyard Land: Before 90’s backyard Poultry was a deep-rooted enterprise on rural food security as well as income for rural communities. The major role of flourishing backyard birds in back to the ’90s was the plenty of backyard land. Backyard land is one of the major needs of these birds for minimizing feed costs and filling behavior desires.           But gradually we have lost our backyard because of high population growth and urbanization. One family backyard breaks into many very small pieces of yard (now can’t say backyard). These small pieces of yard are used by his personal works. This small piece of land is not sufficient for backyard poultry. 🏭 Expanded Opportunity Horizon: Globalization and advancement have opened the door and expanded the income opportunities for every segment of society, that’s improved food security and income of backyard poultry-rearing communities also. Slowly- slowly backyard birds -rearing communities have shrinked and the remaining people/communities are not taking backyard poultry-rearing seriously because they have other opportunities to earn and secure their food security.  👨‍👧‍👧 Changing Attitude/ Generation Gap: High-pace urbanization/advancement/ global connectivity/ income opportunities have changed the living attitude of every single person, especially the youth even in urban as well as rural areas. In Rural areas, youths are disconnecting from backyard bird rearing, and he is connecting this intervention to his family's prestige.  Youths are ready to work in the factory and other salesman jobs but not ready for rear backyard poultry.              🥞🍕 Changing Food Habits/ Ara of Readymade Food:        There would be no hesitation in saying that this is the era of fast food/ ready-made food. Now human life is going very fast and parallelly human food habits have changed so fastly. Fast food/ frozen food/ ready-to-eat/minimum time consumed food has replaced the traditional natural/ fresh/well-cooked food. Backyard- poultry rearing is a slow and time-consuming activity; these things has covered the quality of backyard birds. The current mentality of humans is to get everything just like ready-to-eat food. He has no patience for following backyard-rearing patterns ( growing to production -4/5 months) 🐓 No Matching: Backyard Breed Vs Current Situation:  As it is said change is the mother of invention but it has not happened in the case of backyard birds compared to the broiler industry. As per the situational demand (limited backyard land, society demand, time), the backyard poultry breed has not been developed. No doubt many backyard poultry breeds have been developed but need to things how we can address and balance the current situation.

In light of the recent emphasis on Natural Farming/Agroecology in the 2024-25 budget, NITI Aayog is advancing the scaling up of Natural Farming across India through the approach of collaboration among different stakeholders that support different and successful models. To enable this, NITI Aayog has requested a comprehensive national-level database of key actors in the ecosystem to build visibility and support successful models across different regions. GIZ India and the Consortium for Agroecological Transformation (CAT) are working together in response to create a detailed database of stakeholders involved in Agroecology and Natural Farming. This database will map initiatives across states, districts, and blocks, helping NITI Aayog identify priority districts and potential partners for engagement. We are inviting CSOs, donors, market participants, and financial entities to contribute to this effort by completing a short Google Form, which will take approximately 5 minutes. The information they provide will be consolidated and presented to NITI Aayog. Agricultural Extension Education has experienced significant changes over time. Emerging academic perspectives and innovative applied approaches are driving its swift evolution. While these changes are positive, students must equip themselves with new skills and competencies to be prepared for the competitive job market. They need to stay informed about the latest innovations in the field of agricultural extension education. Recognizing these needs, the Department of Agriculture Extension & Communication of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), Arunachal Pradesh, organized a national webinar on April 30, 2024, called ‘New Frontiers and Competencies in Agricultural Extension Education’. The purpose of the event was to brainstorm on the various competencies and recent developments in the field of agricultural extension education. The webinar was segmented into three distinct sections: the inaugural session, the technical session, and the valedictory session.  The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority have collaborated and have come up with “Unified India Organic” logo. This initiative marks a significant step towards standardizing and streamlining organic certification processes in India. Previously, organic products certified under the National Programme for Organic Products (NPOP) used the India Organic logo, while those certified by FSSAI sported the Jaivik Bharat logo. Now, the Unified India Organic logo will replace both, ensuring clarity and consistency across all organic products in the Indian market.
