India exported 2,63,050 tonnes of organic food worth $447.73 million as of November 25, FY24, according to Union Minister Navneet Singh Bittu. Over the past five years, exports peaked in 2020-21 with 8,88,180 tonnes valued at $1,040.95 million but declined to 2,61,029 tonnes for $494.80 million in 2023-24.  Exports are certified under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP), managed by The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). NPOP ensures standards for organic production, processing, and trade. This is the proposed 8th edition of the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) which holds the Standard for Organic Production, Value Chains, Transportation and Marketing under the India Organic Label. While section to section reading from previous Standards will reveal the differences, as they have not been published by the Nodal Authority, here are a few interesting aspects which are available for the first time (my interpretation) - 1. #PGS Participatory Guarantee System - PGS-India - has now been ingrained in the standard and recognized for reduction of conversion period - See Section 3.1.4.a 2. FSSAI has been indicated as a nodal body which regulates the "Jaivik Bharat" logo for Organic Food Products 3. Wild production is also included in this standard as before, however, local (state/panchayat) government laws are now recognized as enforceable for sustainable collection 4. It is unclear if the new standards and procedures shall increase cost and complexity of certification or reduce it. Given the inflationary pressures, the costs and complexity are bound to go up, but it is not clear if the procedure causes this increase or not. Given that India has faced increasing restriction on its Organic Food Export with regulation getting stringent in other countries, this standard update is a logical step to coherence with global changing situation. In Europe the farmers were up in arms against these strict standards, so much so that the EU had to withdraw the Green Deal even. What happens as a result of this standard to Indian farmers is yet to be understood, especially those who are reliant on exports for Incomes. 🚫 𝗘𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀: 𝗔 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶-𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 🌾 In a recent development, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (𝗔𝗣𝗘𝗗𝗔) 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀. The organic segment, particularly in the context of agricultural exports, has gained significant traction in recent years. As consumers become more health-conscious and discerning about the quality and origin of their food, 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁. Compliance failures by a few can lead to increased scrutiny for all, impacting market access and leading to potential financial losses. ➡️𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗩𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: APEDA’s proactive stance indicates a robust regulatory framework and a commitment to maintaining the integrity of India’s organic exports. However, this incident also underscores the need for continuous monitoring, stringent checks, and regular audits of certification bodies and exporters. 💡 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁? To prevent such lapses in the future, it is essential for the industry to strengthen the 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀. ✅ FSSAI has asserted that controlling chemical contamination in agricultural raw materials is essential for advancing the food industry. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India executive director Inoshi Sharma said: 1) enforcing Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) in crops, fruits, and spices presents a sigt challenge. 2) she stressed the need for regular audits and the rejection of non-compliant produce at farm gates. 4) also highlighted the importance of educating buyers about the detrimental effects of excessive pesticide use, which can lead to contamination in raw materials. 5) She announced plans to form a committee with representatives from various ministries and departments to address this issue. 6) Furthermore, she emphasised the necessity for accurate labeling and the avoidance of misleading claims by FBOs. 7) She advocated for a culture of 'Self-Compliance' among FBOs. Bharat Chamber senior vice-president Naresh Pachisia pointed out that the detection of chemical residues used during crop production often leads to penalties for food processors.
