Let’s talk about learner-centered assessment! On November 20th, we had the privilege of learning alongside Jay McTighe and Starr Sackstein, diving into what it really means to design assessments that empower learners. 💎 from Jay McTighe: “Deep learning is below the surface. It takes time for students to truly understand abstract ideas or processes—but once they do, it endures.” This reminds us why enduring understandings and transfer goals are the ultimate signs of impactful learning. 💎 from Starr Sackstein: “You don’t have to change everything at once. Start small, with big-yield shifts.” Her advice? Begin with a small group, anchor your work in the why, and involve teachers in the journey to reduce resistance. Simple, practical, and game-changing. A special moment during Starr’s session was her conversation with Tahare Campbell, TLIS from the Gilman School! In July, I had a great conversation about AI in schools with Cindy Blackburn for the Toddle - Your Teaching Partner video podcast. With that principle in mind, we’re excited to announce the launch of the first series of the Academic Leaders Forum! In our opening discussion, led by Michael Matthews, we unpacked what truly "defines" an academic leader. Key takeaways included: 🌱 The shared experience of wearing multiple hats as academic leaders, particularly in independent schools. 🌱 The importance of aligning on core values before diving into specific curriculum areas. 🌱 The power of celebrating small wins and tapping into the enthusiasm of teachers to drive change. We also explored what makes an effective curriculum and the emerging themes included: - Clarity and cross-curricular collaboration - Well-defined competencies and real-world projects - Alignment with student outcomes, autonomy, and relevance to their lives.
