Can Mental Health be truly inclusive without justice? This question set the tone for an incredible #MentalHealthandGroundRealities workshop on #MentalJustice I attended this weekend. Organised by Anubhuti Trust in collaboration with HSNC University, Mumbai and KC College Department of Psychology, the workshop was a powerful reminder for the rising professionals in the Mental Health sector of the systematic barriers that persist. The workshop was an experience filled with leading through activities, games, and thought provoking movie screenings followed by deep conversations on justice in mental health. A significant milestone of the event was the launch of their new book, ‘Mann Boli’. This workshop reignited my commitment to making mental health not just accessible but equitable. Here’s to reimagining future where justice is at the heart of mental health. #MentalHealthMatters #MentalJustice

#Thangalaan film released in August 2024 but it received among the loudest cheers at a screening in Miraj Cinemas in Ambernath, about 50km from Mumbai, when a group of women from nomadic and denotified tribes watched what they believed was the reclaiming of a past forgotten, a film that held a mirror to the lives many felt they continued to live. Our latest story by Subha J Rao looks at the migration theme in Tamil and Kannada films in recent years and what led filmmakers to explore the subject. *Mental Health Ground Realities: A Call to Action* I recently had the privilege of attending a comprehensive conference on mental health ground realities which was conducted by Anubhuti Trust and KC College Colaba Campus, with a focus on marginalized communities. As someone from a marginalized caste community, I was deeply moved by the discussions and insights shared. The conference highlighted the intersectionality of caste, poverty, and real-life challenges faced by marginalized populations, and how these factors impact their mental health. Two panel discussions stood out to me: The first panelist, Meet Tara Dhyaneshwar, emphasized the need to bridge the gap between our educational syllabus and the ground-level realities of trauma and mental health. He challenged us as educators to rethink our approach and make our curriculum more inclusive and relevant. The second panelist, Meghana Jadhav, made a profound point that resonated with me. She asked if we had ever considered the importance of expressing psychological issues in regional languages. This struck a chord, as I realized that marginalized populations often struggle to articulate their emotions and experiences due to the lack of linguistic representation. I want to express my gratitude to the organizers and panelists for shedding light on these critical issues. This conference was a game-changer for me, and I look forward to attending more such events that spark meaningful conversations and inspire action. Let's continue to amplify the voices of marginalized communities and work towards creating a more inclusive and compassionate society. #MentalHealthMatters #MarginalizedCommunities #InclusiveEducation #RegionalLanguages #CompassionateSociety

  • With private health care oppressively unaffordable, government public health institutions are not only the only, but the best option in India. Health emergencies are the one of the most common factors of loans and debts.. This health camp, organized in collaboration with doctors of the JJ Hospital in Mumbai, was an effort to bridge the gap between #NTDNT communities- especially women, and government healthcare, an effort towards reducing the awkwardness and fear about healthcare (based on very real negative experiences) among indigenous communities, and an opportunity for doctors to sensitively work with them. With free blood, thyroid, pap smear and other tests, as well as consultations with senior doctors of this prime government hospital in Mumbai, women and girls from Adivasi Padas an tent communities came in throughout the day. We thank Rewat Kaninde for bringing together the group of doctors and lab technicians.

  • In this year of the 75th year of the #IndianConstitution , it is more important than ever to continue to engage with Constitutional values, practices, stands, actions, participation and leadership. At the grassroots, #Democratic and #Constitutional engagement has always been high and yet, other influences keep pushing in by manipulating economic and social vulnerabilities. Several organizations and groups across the country are taking this opportunity to discuss about the #ConstitutionOfIndia and relevance and Anubhuti too is a small part of this wave.. Throughout the past weeks, through public talks, movement-songs, focus group discussions, cultural expressions, youth-led on ground campaigns have reached hundreds in #Adivasi padas, #NomadicDenotifiedTribe tent communities.. the campaign shall go into the next month, bringing together aspects of #16daysofactivism and #HumanRights , with the public engagements including #ConstitutionAndWomensRights #ConstitutionAndHumanRights #ConstitutionAndMinorityRights and so on.. feeling positive to see that the #Constitution stays alive on the ground, with people taking time out from their very busy lives of struggle, survival and aspirations to come together for our #Republic With friends like Saher , Sangharsh Apte who come on just one call sharing their expertise

  • Yesterday, we had a day long interaction with almost 100 students of Psychology and Social Work from almost 15 colleges in Mumbai and Thane District. As aspiring mental health professionals, they spent the day in delving deep into how the education sector as well as the MH field , like the rest of society, suffers from the same caste, gender, colonial, majoritarian prejudices. It was really encouraging to see so many students not only turn up but be very open and receptive to changing their viewpoint. "Why are we not taught about ground realities more, we wish to understand and contribute. Please tell us what we can do to be inclusive and sensitive.." as one student emphatically stated. The highlight of the Conference was the cultural expression by the expert folk artists from Nathpanthi Davri Gosavi community, who are experts in the secret sign language of Shivaji Maharaj's times. There was a standing ovation to their presentation and the audience could connect how the ground has expertise and knowledge in mental relied and release through art and music and dance. Panelists Meet Tara Dnyaneshwar, Assistant professor with PN Doshi Women's College SNDT and Meghana , a Counselor with experience with trauma survivors and minority communities, started off the day with critical insights into the subject of the day: #MentalHealthandGroundRealities. The youth led Badlache Parv Kala Manch added very important social and political insights with their movement songs. They also led focus group discussions using games from our #MannMela module. Last but not least, our #MannBoli book- about the Empowering side of Mental Health was was launched by the hands of the Dean of Humanities, HSNC University, Mumbai and the panelists. We appreciate the #Psychology Department of Kishinchand Chellaram (KC) College, Mumbai for collaborating and being so open about critical discussions and debate #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness

  • This is tomorrow! Looking at #MentalHealth with intersections of #Caste, #Gender and #Sexuality, as well as myriad of ground realities due to which it becomes very important to approach mental health going beyond the health sector - as a Justice issue, requiring multi-sectoral, holistic and Constitutional responses. While in-person registrations are closed, do join in hybrid mode. • Today on #IndianConstitutionDay, re-asserting our commitment and stand with the #Constitution of #India With an ever growing caravan of youth - from #NTDNT, #Adivasi communities in the Anubhuti mentored youth #cultural forum #BadlacheParvKalaManch, efforts to imbue Constitutional values shall never stop. It is a challenging but equally rewarding process , and the young women and men constantly exposed to bitterness around them, are also trying to hold on to democratic and republican ideas and practices.. In our recent two days residential camp with over 50 young men, it was a privilege to have experts from their own communities as the trainers and resource persons. From #Bahurupi and #Gondhali communities, they shared their expertise of #SecretSignLanguage from Shivaji Maharaj's times that have been nurtured only in memory. The young leader from the Gondhali community taught the youth how to perform #Gondhal, after which they wrote Gondhali on social subjects such as civic rights and education issues. Holding strong to Constitutional roots , which are embedded deep in our land.. #HumSanvidhanvadi #SanvidhanDin #SamvidhanDivas #BhartiyaSamvidhan #IndianConstitution

  • #BadlacheParvKalaManch - a mixed youth cultural group, that began in 2018 spanning members from 3 districts, today may be a unique group with over a hundred members from #NTDNT, #Adivasi #Indigenous #rural communities. With multiple ranks of leadership- the oldest now taking leading roles in outside campaigns and initiatives, as well as mentoring the next line of youth leaders, who are in turn mentoring the adolescent wing. We are also incredibly proud to see the organic way in which young women and girls' leadership has emerged in the group. Taking ahead opportunities for learning, this was a two days residential camp with women members of the group. While they are a young, and only growing up group now, they come from over 15 rural and tent communities, representing hundreds of peers, their families, elders and so on. This is a small way of watering the seeds of cultural movements in the grassroot, keeping alive their inherent richness of music, dance and artistic expressions. We are humbled to thus try to take ahead our small responsibility, of the legacy of #culturalmovements that we have inherited in Maharashtra and which is in the land of India. Much love to Dhamma and Pravin who gave their time during this camp.
