Take a look at this picture. It was taken today at our Salesforce offices in Tel-Aviv. It shows a few dozens of Salesforce Israel employees in one of our regular all-hands meetings. What's so special about that? Well, that picture was taken exactly 36 hours after Iran launched a massive aerial strike against Israel with 100s of UCAVs, ballistic and cruise missiles carrying about 60 tons(!) of explosives. Thanks to the Israeli Air force, the air forces of the US, UK, France, Jordan and others *and* Israeli innovation and engineering talent who developed the most advanced multi-layered air defense systems in the world - luckily that attack ended up with relatively low impact. It was a sleepless night for all us in Israel who got an advanced notice of the attack and basically spent that night bracing for impact. Now take another look at this picture. 36 hours later - People showing up at the office, talking to each other, having a few laughs, having meetings, discussing deadlines, solving business problems, discussing engineering problems, doing demos, having coffee and lunch together, having an all-hands meeting together. 36 hours ago we were bracing for impact of 60 tons of explosives that were about to fall out of the sky. Top Israeli Applications that I should use, but I hate them. In this article, I want to address a simple improvement that could be made to mobile phone applications that are commonly used in Israel but aren't very user-friendly. Many applications, such as those for banking, parking, government services, medicine, and discounts, should have translations available, at least in English. Since there are many expatriates in Israel and Hebrew is not widely spoken globally, it can be very difficult for non-Hebrew speakers to use these apps. The solution is to use variables in the app instead of hardcoding the text and to provide a table with translations for desired languages. There should be a disclaimer stating that the translations are automated and may not be perfect, but it would be 10000% more useful than trying to use endless screenshots in Google Translate. 1. BIT Bit - it is an application for transferring money from your bank account (card account) to other people. In Russia, I can make this type of transfer directly from my bank application to any other bank. Here, everyone needs to install a special app and add a credit card there. But this is beyond the scope, also a language problem which are present too. Okay, installed. What is the most popular pattern of use? Sending money regularly! For example, every month I need to send payment for electricity to my landlord. But I can't find my previous payment and press "repeat operation," instead of this I should find his mobile phone number in the phone and arrange payment like a new one. Not good practice. 2. PANGO Pango is a parking payment program that has added a lot of extra functions, but focusing on these additional features has taken away from the main feature - paying for parking. The app doesn't automatically detect the user's location or city, so whenever I travel to a new city, I have to manually search for it in the list of about 25 cities. Then, I must choose the type of parking for my car, which requires knowledge of the city's geography, street names, etc. After using the app for 3 years, I still don't know what happens if I choose the wrong type of parking. In addition to parking, Pango offers the ability to pay for gas and transport and shows ads and alerts when starting, even when I need to start it quickly. Continue in comments.....

According to a source familiar with the negotiations, Noname Security, a #cybersecurity business that safeguards APIs, is in advanced talks to be acquired by Akamai Technologies for $500 million. Noname is based in Palo Alto but has Israeli roots. It was co-founded in 2020 by Oz Golan and Shay Levi. The firm recently had a valuation of $1 billion, having raised $220 million from venture capitalists and $135 million in a Series C round led by Lightspeed and Georgian in December 2021. The acquisition would be for cash as it stands, the individual added, even if the sale price represents a substantial markdown from that valuation. The #agreement is not binding and may be altered or not proceed at all. The Syndicate Group, Cyberstarts, ForgePoint, Next47, and Insight Partners are among the other investors that have supported Noname. Even if Noname's prospective selling price is just half of its previous private valuation, early investors will still #benefit significantly from the sale. In the meanwhile, the agreement should enable later-stage investors, especially those who contributed after the previous round, to receive a complete return on their #investment, if not the profit they had anticipated during the prosperous days of 2021 when capital was pouring and values were high. According to the source, the acquisition values the business at about 15X its recurring yearly sales. If the deal goes through, Noname's 200+ workers should transfer to Akamai. Akamai declined to respond. According to a Noname Security representative, "We generally refrain from commenting on rumors or speculation," was told. According to a January article from The Information, Noname was attempting to obtain capital at a #significantly lower valuation in a second funding round. Calcalist, an Israeli news site, said in February that Noname was in talks with other possible purchasers, including Akamai. When the U.S. Federal Reserve hiked interest rates, the values of many venture capital-backed firms that had raised money during the height of the #IT boom plummeted. Many are now in what's known in the financial sector as a dual-track process searching for buyers and a fresh round of capital at the same time. After the IPO market was shut down for more than a year, many later-stage venture #capitalists are now searching for liquidity. 𝐃𝐨 𝐕𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐄𝐚𝐭 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐨𝐧? 🥓 Google invests billions in 🇮🇱 Israeli technologies and companies. Some of Google's (or Alphabet Inc.'s) largest acquisitions have been Israeli innovations, from Waze ($1.3Bn acquisition in 2013) to Wiz ($23Bn acquisition discussions in 2024). Yet, the 𝑩𝑫𝑺 𝒎𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕, which promotes boycotting 🇮🇱 Israeli products, happily uses Google services to spread their message. For instance, the 𝐍𝐨 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐬 𝐚𝐩𝐩, which helps consumers avoid Israeli products in supermarkets, has over 1 million downloads. Ironically, these users are consuming ads and paying Google for the privilege, all while using the 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐎𝐒, another Alphabet Inc. product. This contradiction reveals a lack of a moral compass guiding the BDS movement. It's all about convenience. They boycott Israeli canned goods, fresh produce, and other small items but rely on Israeli technology to identify products to boycott! As a carnivore, I used to love cheese and crackers, couldn't resist the smell of bacon, and enjoyed all kinds of cakes. But as a vegan, none of those appeal to me anymore because I refrain from eating animal products. I commend people who devote themselves to a specific way of life they believe in. However, I think a lot less of those, like BDS supporters, who make noise but don't follow through with their convictions. FUN FACT - Israel's 🍉 Watermelon harvest is greater than any other Middle Eastern (Arab) country and 6X Palestinian production (89M tons). 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐈𝐬𝐫𝐚𝐞𝐥, or don't. Love Jews, or don't. I don't care either way. Just make up your mind and follow through. If you're a vegan, don't eat bacon. 🌱

Israel is a giant playground if you can perceive it as such. One of my adventures in the corridors of Israeli academia (it’s a comedy. They all are) involved an esoteric investigation into a new class of numbers. There was a notion that there is a negative zero and a positive zero, and that it is somehow useful. I came in to the lab, understood what is required, and wrote the code that produces negative and positive zeros, and queries that perform statistical analysis on the outputs, etc, etc, etc. Negative zeros, positive zeros, perhaps useless in any case aside from slippage calculation in zero-ish trade thresholds. I did not invest in Firefly. In fact, the first time I heard of this venture was probably after learning about their CTO/ Co-Founder, Sefi Genis, who tragically lost his life at the Nova music festival on October 7th. Later, I got acquainted with Ido Neeman, the CEO/ Co-Founder, and discovered that Firefly had an ongoing business relationship with one of our portfolio companies. Sefi’s and Firefly’s story touched me deeply on a personal level. As an early-stage investor, when evaluating new teams, we often consider many risks—most of which are difficult to even hypostatize. We think of risks, such as lack of PMF, challenges to achieve traction, etc. However, it's unimaginable to think that a startup founder/ CTO might meet such a tragic fate as Sefi did. I followed Firefly’s journey from afar, occasionally exchanging messages with Ido. The interview Ido gave to Moshe Zilberstein from Next47 was incredibly moving, highlighting not only outstanding personal resilience but also extraordinary business resilience—exactly the kind of strength early-stage investors look for in their portfolio founders. The way Ido explained how they coped after realizing Sefi was gone, and how he and the entire Firefly team grew from such a profound moment of grief, speaks volumes about the essence of the Israeli tech industry.
