10 years ago, this unpretentious building housed a company called Brookfield Aviation International. It wasn’t just any hiring firm. Brookfield played a key role in Ryanair’s controversial hiring scheme: Pilots weren’t hired directly by Ryanair – instead, they were routed through Brookfield, set up with small companies by accountants, and contracted back to Ryanair through layers of agreements. Confused? You’re not alone. These “fake self-employment” schemes stripped pilots of job security and crucial rights, leaving regulators grappling with questions about labor, taxes, and safety. Fast forward to today: the Ghent University team that first exposed this in 2015 is launching a new study – bigger and broader – to explore employment, wellbeing, and safety in aviation. Are you a pilot or aircrew member with Wizz, Buzz, Ryanair, or another European airline? Your voice is critical! Share this with colleagues, especially those not in unions, and help uncover the full picture. Link to survey in the comments!
