ByteDance (Douyin in China and TikTok in the rest of the world) has become a major rival in China to the established order of the three Chinese giants Alibaba, JD, and PinDuoDuo (Temu). Douyin's mid-year GMV growth of 46% year-over-year follows a previous year of 80% growth. This is in stark contrast to Taobao and Tmall, which only achieved a combined GMV growth of 5%. ByteDance has also launched Douyin Search, a standalone application with an interface as simple as Google's, allowing users to explore Douyin's content. There are 50 million content creators worldwide, a number that has doubled in just two years. They generate revenue of $100 billion in the West and $400 billion in Asia. This is the creator economy, and it's the driving force behind this phenomenon. This is why we have already assisted dozens of leading companies in the beauty, luxury, and pet food industries in their social commerce transformation. Social commerce brings two key attributes: greater salience, especially among those under 35 who will constitute the bulk of tomorrow's consumer pool, and greater resilience, which is a business's ability to organically develop its sales. Today, the main driver of salience can be summed up in one sentence: how does the creator economy talk about a brand, and how can we orchestrate a shared value creation with it? A new e-commerce player enters the Thai market. The entry of Chinese e-commerce giant Temu into Thailand is set to intensify competition and potentially disrupt local retailers like Lazada, Shopee, and TikTok. Temu's aggressive pricing strategies and rapid delivery services are expected to attract many consumers but may lead to the shuttering of local factories and increased economic strain on SMEs. What's cookin' in the digital kitchen? 🌏 Issue 02 – Aug. 11-18👇 🇨🇳 “Tech giants are seeing the biggest gains from GenAI by integrating LLMs into apps and services that already had large user bases, according to QuestMobile” (SCMP News) – What does it mean? AI has more to gain and offer from large databases already available, like social media, fintech, education, and office collaborations. Feeding the AI beast is key to getting proper use of the technology, and Alibaba made the best use of it with its investment bot (or intelligent financial assistant) Zhixiabao. So expect AI to be a lot more part of your daily lives and investments. Good news or bad news? You decide. 🤔 Why does it matter? China's tech advancement and AI advancement are found in most products shipped worldwide, like smart vacuum robots that clean your place and scare your cat. Data collected helps fuel back the companies that are producing them in the first place to ultimately improve their products. 🇨🇦A year ago, Meta pulled out all media from their platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Threads) in response to a government bill forcing social media companies to pay news outlets linking to their content. How did that go so far? Well a report that came out this month by Media Ecosystem Observatory found that nearly half of online news media engagement is down the drain, including 85% on Facebook and Instagram. A loss that “a loss that “has not been compensated by increases on other social media platforms.” So if you are wondering why there is less work in media in Canada, now you know. 🤔 Why does it matter? The news and media world is highly dependant on engagement, even if that is not rewarded with direct revenue from social media posts. Losing access to an audience as massive as what Meta has ultimately hurts viewership and the ability of news media companies to generate revenue. *In my opinion, asking for money from social media platforms for the content you share on them is a testimonial to the lack of confidence of media companies in their ability to convert their users once they land on their website. So, I would revisit their marketing and web strategy to provide a seamless experience for the users with content that makes them say, "This is cool, yes, I WILL subscribe." 📈 How brands impact share price in Asia: the case of Best Korean Brands. Interbrand's main driver is to help brands boost the value and return on their businesses. The 12th edition of the report on the 50 most valuable brands in Korea demonstrates the importance of the brand and its impact on the share price. Specifically, companies listed among Interbrand's 2024 Best Korean Brands show a 41% higher stock price increase vs the KOSPI average, reflecting the growing significance of brand assets in corporate value. Brands now influence not only consumers but also investors. The line between these audiences becomes increasingly blurred, pushing us to consider ‘public investors’ rather than general consumers targeted through marketing and promotion.
