In this case, if you are in the medical profession, you're selling plastic bottles, you are now in the tech company. And if you're a tech company, that means you're vulnerable to cybersecurity attacks and threats.” Healthcare, which includes a sprawling number of companies, organizations, suppliers, vendors, contractors and more, not only have the vulnerability of all tech companies, but have the added responsibility to safeguard patient records. In this podcast we look at the surge in cybersecurity attacks targeting the U.S. healthcare sector, evidenced by a significant increase in data breaches compromising millions of patient records in recent years. Specific incidents like the cyberattack on Change Healthcare underscore the severity of these breaches. Healthcare data breaches continue to be the most financially damaging across industries, costing millions per incident. Vulnerabilities in outdated medical devices further exacerbate risks, enabling remote manipulation by hackers. The healthcare sector's unique challenges, including reliance on closed-off technology and limited integration with external partners, amplify vulnerability to cyber threats. To address these issues, healthcare entities must adopt comprehensive cybersecurity strategies involving critical functions and stakeholders. However, the industry faces a significant shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals, emphasizing the need for upskilling and training efforts. Effective cybersecurity practices rely not only on technologies but also on skilled individuals for successful implementation and management, underscoring the urgent need for improved cybersecurity measures in healthcare. Serene Sia, Ben King, and, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong as well as representatives from Enterprise Singapore pushing #levers to kick off and accelerate Singapore’s accelerated #AI growth! Earlier, Serene Sia shared a wonderful keynote about Google‘s new offerings to the industry: Google has launched two new initiatives to support the adoption of AI among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and startups in Singapore. The Google for Startups Accelerator: Southeast Asia program aims to help 100 AI-focused startups grow over the next three years. The first cohort of 25 startups has already graduated, presenting innovative AI solutions. Through this program, startups will gain access to Google Cloud services, AI tools, and funding support to accelerate their growth and development. Additionally, Google introduced the Gemini for Google Workspace program to simplify AI integration for SMEs, making AI more accessible and useful for small businesses. In partnership with Enterprise Singapore, Google Cloud is also offering training and upskilling programs to support SMEs. Eligible SMEs can benefit from a 12-month license for AI tools, with up to half of the cost covered. Early adopters, including BigTiny and Hikari Services, have reported enhanced efficiency and improved business outcomes from these initiatives.

Eclipse Thailand Meetup#1: A Missed Opportunity for Engagement The inaugural Eclipse Thailand Meetup had all the hallmarks of a promising event, bringing together key players like Eclipse, Symmetry, and Band Protocol to explore Eclipse’s innovative Layer 2 solution. With the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) at its core, Eclipse aims to address Ethereum’s scalability issues—a topic that is increasingly drawing interest within the blockchain community. However, despite the event’s potential, the execution left much to be desired. From the outset, it was clear that basic event logistics had been overlooked. The sound system was poorly calibrated—rendering the host barely audible while amplifying the speakers to an uncomfortable level. The session itself started late, which might have been a reaction to the modest turnout of about two dozen attendees. Additionally, the early delivery of the catering seemed out of sync with the schedule, leaving pizzas to sit out for hours before they were intended to be served, cold. For those who made the effort to attend — some traveling significant distances — the event fell short of expectations. With many attendees disengaged and more focused on their phones than the discussions at hand, the opportunity for meaningful interaction was largely missed. In reflecting on this experience, it’s clear that even the most promising content can be undermined by poor execution. As the weekend approaches, I’ll be considering a checklist of best practices for hosting successful events — an essential guide for ensuring that future meetups resonate more effectively with their audience. #fail #events #eclipse #solana #SVM #ethereum

Day 14 of #USvGoogle started with Google Finance Director, Jessica Mok. Google tried to minimize the financial importance of its adtech business, showing that it operated at a loss from 2015-2017, to downplay the role of display in generating revenue, and land an out-of-context soundbite about how much they pay publishers. On cross, DOJ highlighted that Google tracks revenue separately for display, video and app inventory, and for direct vs. indirect-sold inventory supporting their market definition argument. DOJ also pointed out that Google decides whether to classify revenue as principal or agent, which informs whether Traffic Acquisition Costs (”TAC”), money paid to publishers, is included in their figures. Obviously, without TAC, booked revenue will appear lower, and margin will appear higher. Google then called Dr. Mark Israel to play some more number games. He is an economics expert, and his analysis is central to Google’s case. While I expected something at least somewhat compelling, instead we got analysis that appears completely detached from reality. Google seems to want to pretend their publisher customers simply do not exist. While DOJ’s case focuses primarily on harm to publishers, there was a 30 minute stretch of time at the beginning of Israel’s testimony where his only mention of anything publisher-adjacent was to explain the origin of the “cellophane fallacy” as the theory that prices for cellophane might go up so much that people resort to wrapping their sandwiches in newspaper. He starts by refuting the DOJ’s definition of 3 distinct markets, proposing instead that adtech is a single two-sided market. He says that DOJ excludes other places advertisers find impressions, other ways “connections” to audiences are made, and the other types of adtech that exist. No mention of publishers. He talks about shifting media consumption trends, highlighting growth of apps and mobile environments, as well as the growth of ad spend on social, and the rise of retail media. Still, no mention of publishers. He talks about how social and retail media companies act as competitive restraints on Google and serve as reasonable substitutes…again, with respect to advertisers. Google even pulls up a deck to make their point that compares Google and Amazon, and explicitly references the fact that Amazon does not offer a publisher ad server, while Google has DFP. Finally he mentions publishers, to say that if ROI for advertisers were to fall, both advertisers and publishers might switch. For example, he says, publishers might move to a different exchange, move more of their content to apps, or adopt a subscription model. Soon after, he explains publishers can move more of their inventory from indirect to direct sales. It’s about “how hard sales people work” to sell direct. A few minutes later, he suggests that if Google’s publisher ad server isn’t good, advertisers might switch to Facebook. I literally wrote “What??” in my notes. (more in comments)
