ICAO Annex 14 Vol 1 provides a recommendation to instal simple touchdown zone lights with the intention to "to provide pilots with enhanced situational awareness in all visibility conditions and to help enable pilots to decide whether to commence a go-around if the aircraft has not landed by a certain point on the runway." Para 5.3.14.1 "Recommendation - Except where TDZ lights are provided in accordance with paragraph 5.3.13, at an aerodrome where the approach angle is greater than 3.5 degrees and/or the Landing Distance Available combined with other factors increases the risk of an overrun, simple touchdown zone lights should be provided." The specifications for simple TDZ lights are then mandatory standards, if the lights are installed. My recent post on simple TDZs is at https://lnkd.in/eeKZpCfe Many readers of Annex 14 can mistakenly read this recommendation as not applying to their aerodrome because it has a normal 3 degree approach. However, this clause from Annex, like many others, has more than one condition that is equally applicable. If, as an aerodrome operator, you read a recommendation: if the Landing Distance Available combined with other factors increases the risk of an overrun, simple touchdown zone lights should be provided. Then I suggest that it is likely that you would consider such an installation. What factors should be considered under the foregoing statement: 1. less than full recommended runway end safety area dimensions; 2. runway rubber contamination regularly causes runway friction to approach the State friction minimum; 3. the approach is difficult or non-standard; 4. a combination of factors regularly cause aeroplanes to land long or fast. This is just one example of how State CAA's should consider how they word their State regulations and guidance rather than just copy the ICAO Annexes. Very interesting topic to study about in aviation. PAPI lights. (Precision Approach Path Indicator). It tells the pilot in command about their glide slope path and how low or how high or are they on the correct glide slope. 2 red and 2 white is the glide slope every landing requires.

No excuse for showing no respect for passengers property, supervision is a must to prevent this behaviour and determine the cause of these actions, and if necessary to terminate employment on the spot. I also believe that cabin/overhead luggage needs to be strictly controlled to maximum dimensions. We've all seen individuals trying to force huge pieces of luggage into the overheads, waisting time,holding up other passsngers boarding, and quite often using the first available overhead locker on entry to the cabin, which may be quite a distance from their allocated seat. Such disrespect for those who can't use their own overhead locker directly above their seat. Another point, those idiots that decide once the seatbelt sign extinguishes, that they desperately need something from their huge bag, causing more disruption. Just think and use your head before boarding, don't be a frustrating moron onboard, lets all enjoy our flights. But airlines, please reduce the size of cabin luggage, it will make boarding much quicker !!!!

Cathay Pacific Increases Flight Frequency to Colombo for Winter 2024-2025 Cathay Pacific has announced an updated winter schedule for 2024-2025, increasing its flight frequency between Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport and Hong Kong. Starting from 2 January 2025 to 1 March 2025, the airline will operate four return flights per week, up from the current three. Furthermore, the frequency will increase to five weekly return flights between 2 March 2025 and 30 March 2025. The flights will be serviced by Cathay Pacific's Airbus A330 aircraft, featuring flatbeds in Business Class, along with Premium Economy and Economy cabins. Passengers will also have the convenience of connecting to onward destinations via the airline’s Hong Kong hub. Rakesh Raicar, Regional General Manager for South Asia, Middle East, and Africa, emphasized the airline’s focus on enhancing connectivity: "As we continue to strengthen our network, we are excited to boost connectivity between Colombo, Hong Kong, and beyond, providing our customers with greater flexibility and choice." In addition to passenger services, the increased flight frequency brings added cargo capacity, particularly benefiting time-sensitive shipments like perishables, mail, and courier services. This expanded belly capacity will help meet the growing demand for reliable and efficient cargo solutions in the Colombo market. Source: Daily News

General Approach to WFD ·     To ensure the continued structural airworthiness of ageing aircraft: - The operators are required to undertake a program of modification or replacement of structure susceptible to MSD/MED, before the LDC (Large Damage Capability) of the structure is compromised - A series of directed inspections of the susceptible structure may be introduced into the operator’s maintenance schedule - This program of special inspections for MSD/MED must end at the Structural Modification Point (SMP), beyond which no aircraft may be operated unless the structure has been modified or replaced. ·     It is extremely difficult to analyze WFD using the standard methods based on the first principles of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM). Therefore, more advanced methods have been explored and developed over the past few decades with the support and sponsorship of the FAA and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) ·     Since fatigue cracks at multiple locations may interact, leading to subsequent crack initiation and growth, the analysis becomes more complex than the evaluation of a single isolated fatigue crack undertaken in a conventional damage tolerance assessment The challenge lies with the above methodologies is experimental validation of the proposed tools and criterion in developing a WFD assessment approach. The methodology developed must be verified and validated using experimental data to ensure its successful application to industry with ease.

Understanding CPL Training: Hours & Subjects.  Certainly! When it comes to understanding CPL (Commercial Pilot License) training, the hours and subjects covered are essential aspects. Hours of Training: 1. Total Flight Hours: CPL training typically requires a minimum number of flight hours, often around 150-200 hours. 2. Dual Instruction: A significant portion of these flight hours involves dual instruction, where you're flying with an instructor. 3. Solo Flight: You'll also need a certain number of solo flight hours, gaining experience without an instructor present.                                           Subjects Covered: 1. Navigation: Learning how to navigate using instruments and charts, understanding airspace regulations. 2. Meteorology: Studying weather patterns and their impact on flight operations. 3. Aircraft Systems: Understanding the mechanics and systems of the aircraft you'll be flying. 4. Aura FFF - 01 Nov 24 5N-BQG Timeline time …….. Aura is continuing to gather evidence for the Eastwind Aviation Fatal Investigation. I do try to keep our FFFs ‘light’ in tone; however, this investigation is beyond seriousness and sadness for us and EA. What I can tell you is that, as yet, despite some lines of enquiry; we don’t have anything like a working or credible hypothesis. Hopefully the CVR/FDR can bring clarity on the ‘what’ 🙏🏻 The ‘light’ note today is on timelines. I have always favoured a large whiteboard and several Post-It note pads - old man right 🤪 …… time for this old dog to learn a new trick. We have already collated so much technical data, the white board can’t cope…… about to build a big, big, MS Excel timeline - do wish us well.

The aviation industry should pay closer attention to runway safety, as Singapore’s air traffic approaches full recovery from pre-pandemic levels in 2024, urges the CAAS Chief. “Changi Airport Group announced that 16.5 million passengers passed through the airport in Q1 2024, exceeding pre-pandemic levels. CAAS is developing a new national aviation safety plan to deal with post-pandemic challenges, targeted to be published in Q1 of 2025.” Runway safety is crucial in an airport to prevent accidents and to ensure the efficient, coordinated movement of aircraft during takeoffs, landings, and taxiing operations. There are always lessons to be learnt for aerodrome operators when these incidents of aeroplanes departing from a closed runway occur. This is a short read that includes some salient points. An excess of NOTAMS for one airport; No markings, signs or barriers to indicate the closed runway; ATC closed at the time of departure. One question I have is did the airport operations staff monitor the radio frequency that the pilots used to announce their intentions. RNAV vs. RNP… Confusing? RNAV stands for A(R)ea (NAV)igation. Traditional Navigation involves flying between ground based radio aids like VORs and NDBs. RNAV involves feeding those signals into a computer to triangulate your actual position and allow you to fly to arbitrary waypoints. The best known form of RNAV is GNSS/GPS using satellites for triangulation. GPS is the primary source in most modern airliners, but if you lose that you still have DME/DME updating, VOR/DME etc... RNP is a required navigation performance which is a requirement to operate under performance based navigation - PBN. It’s basically RNAV with the addition of an on board alerting and monitoring capability. RNP is also a statement of required navigational ability when operating within a certain airspace. RNP1 being accurate to within 1 NM at least 95% of the time, with the ability to alert the crew when the Actual Navigation Preformance ANP does not meet thr RNP.

LCC dominated APAC is visibly struggling to achieve pre-covid RASK ( Revenue per Available Seat KM ) levels while others are showing good recovery . There is a high probability that airfares will continue to rise to meet the CASK (Cost of Available Seat KM).#Aviation #Airline

Keep in mind that VNAV button has only one plan in mind and rarely aligns with ATC vectors. Energy Management is a critical skill for aviators and has less margin for error when moving up to transport category aircraft. Embracing "old school" techniques will make you more consistent and adaptable to an array of approach scenarios.
