Crew Guidance 👨✈️👩✈️ for GPS Spoofing mitigation has been published today by the GPS Spoofing Workgroup. This contains: - Best practices for spoofing regions - Actions before, during and after spoofing - Typical spoofing flight profile - One-page Checklist style summary - Diagrams: Typical Flight Profile, GPS during Jamming & Spoofing The Workgroup is close to wrapping up. The complete report will be published on September 6th, 2024. This is an extract from the complete report, next up is a Technical Guide (How/Why/Where), Safety Concerns, Impacts, and Recommendations. Not all of these are public, but will be available in the OPSGROUP Members Dashboard.

An INCREDIBLE work carried out by OPSGROUP, lead by Mark Zee, and an admirable collaborative effort between amazingly smart people from the wide spectrum of the aviation industry. I'm happy to have been able to contribute, even slightly, to this project, on behalf of the European Business Aviation Association (EBAA) , and in close cooperation with my fellow colleague Stéphane De Wolf from IBAC. The outcome of this working group is what happens when people collaborate and communicate effectively. Probably one of the most striking lessons learned during this whole GPS Spoofing Project. When you put hundreds of brains together, with a common objective and a common mindset, you get efficient, useful, practical and usable results. GPS spoofing is indeed a growing concern for aviation safety. By sending false GPS signals, attackers can potentially mislead aircraft navigation systems, leading to incorrect positioning and trajectory information. This could have serious implications for flight safety, potentially causing navigational errors or even accidents. To mitigate these risks, aviation authorities and organizations needs to focus more on enhancing signal integrity, developing anti-spoofing technologies, and employing multiple layers of redundancy in navigation systems (e:g INS , IRS etc). Regular updates to security protocols and advanced monitoring systems are also crucial to address this emerging threat effectively.

An interesting and in-depth explanation of how #GPSspoofing works, which poses a potential #threat to #aviation, and suitable measures must be found to ensure safe operations.

GPS Spoofing WorkGroup announced - Register below. GPS Spoofing is starting to get out of hand. At first, very few aircraft were being affected – now, it’s hundreds every day. Today we learned of a second fake location over the Black Sea. We are starting to get used to ignoring EGPWS warnings, that we once ALWAYS followed. Navigation is degraded, EICAS messages are confusing, clarity on GPS systems and how they actually work is missing. A single, full slice of the Swiss Cheese has been removed. It’s likely we are heading for an accident directly caused by this issue. This is why we are organizing a GPS Spoofing WorkGroup, starting end of next week. Our aim is to collaborate with as many experts, OEM’s, operators, flight crew, ATC, agencies, and industry organizations as possible to discuss all aspects of this issue, and find solutions. We will present a community report on impact, safety, security, and our recommendations together with crew guidance. If you’d like to participate, register now. Port And Starboard of a Ship: In maritime terminology, "port" and "starboard" are essential for navigation and communication aboard a ship. Port refers to the left side of the vessel when facing forward, while starboard denotes the right side. These terms originated from the need to avoid confusion, as "left" and "right" can vary depending on the observer's orientation. Understanding these sides is crucial for safe maneuvering, as many ships have their controls and equipment oriented according to these designations. For instance, when giving directions or coordinating with crew members, using "port" and "starboard" ensures clarity. Additionally, navigational lights differ, with red lights indicating port and green lights indicating starboard, further aiding in nighttime identification of vessels.
