Project Gaia has leveraged generative artificial intelligence (AI) to facilitate climate risk analysis in the financial system. Today, the BIS published the concluding report of Gaia Phase I, which showcases a proof of concept and presents insights on global climate-related financial risk analysis enabled by the new approach. Climate-related risks represent a new challenge for financial institutions and for overall financial stability. Central banks and supervisors need to perform climate risk analysis to assess the financial system’s vulnerabilities to climate change. Corporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosures represent a rich source of information for climate risk analysis, but extracting data from long text documents is difficult and time consuming. Project Gaia has developed a groundbreaking solution embedding generative AI, in particular large language models, into an IT application to automate this task. The application enables comprehensive analysis of climate-related financial indicators. The project’s success paves the way for further AI-enabled applications for central banks and the financial sector, for example regulatory and supervisory use cases. Project Gaia is a collaboration between the BIS Innovation Hub Eurosystem Centre, the Bank of Spain, the Deutsche Bundesbank and the European Central Bank.
