Open Radio Access Network: Is a concept that revolves around the interoperability and standardization of RAN components, encompassing a uniform connectivity standard for white-box hardware as well as open-source software elements provided by various suppliers. The Open RAN design combines a customizable base station software stack with readily available hardware, enabling baseband and radio unit elements from various vendors to work harmoniously. The Open RAN architecture defined by the O-RAN Alliance and supported by 3GPP can be virtualized and containerized by breaking down traditional remote radio head RRH and baseband units BBUs into open radio units O-RUs, open distributed units O-DUs, and open centralized units O-CUs, all while using open and interoperable components. Open RAN sets efficient 5G RAN goals by focusing on efficiency, intelligence, and versatility. Implementing Open RAN at the edge of the network facilitates 5G functionalities like self-driving vehicles, which depend on fast response times and strong dependability, all the while efficiently catering to various network slicing scenarios. On the #security front, issue #8 of 3GPP newsletter contains an article on the Security Assurance (#SCAS) specifications developed by SA WG3. Thanks to my colleagues in SA3, we have been prolific in creating Security Assurance specifications for all major EPC nodes, eNB (4G) and almost all 5G core network nodes. Theses specifications define the basic fundamental test cases which are are used in the GSMA NESAS certification program which are mandatory for the EU and many other regional #cyber-certification and compliance programs.

One of the exciting demos at the 2024 P4 Workshop was “P4 IDE: An Integrated Development Environment for P4-based Data Plane Development” presented by Namrata Limaye, Intel Corporation. Overview: Software development relies on Integrated Development Environment (IDE) to efficiently develop code, debug and test. Currently, there is no IDE available for P4 development which adds additional time and steps for developers. Performing this setup manually is time consuming, error prone and requires domain expertise. The proposed solution enables a GUI based single-executable which when installed in user-space handles installation of all required P4 tools along with VS Code P4 IDE extension which eases the invocation of these tools in single click. This environment includes interfaces for data collection and control, as well as ML capabilities for model training, deployment, and inference. The O-RAN specifications offer detailed descriptions of ES use cases, including message flows between involved entities and the ML framework. Building on this foundation, we have developed an ES-rApp that performs RCR using Deep Q-Learning to optimize EE. By leveraging RL, the ES-rApp can intelligently recognize hidden dependencies between O-RU configuration, power consumption, throughput, PRB utilization, and user distribution across beams, allowing it to dynamically adjust the number of active RF channels. This enables efficient reconfiguration of the O-RU, achieving energy savings during low-traffic periods while maintaining high QoS during peak times. This blog post provides an overview of the EE framework based on use cases defined by the O-RAN ALLIANCE, followed by the ES-rApp implementation. STMicroelectronics to Build €5 Billion Plant in #Italy with #EU Chips Act Aid STMicroelectronics NV said it plans to spend €5 billion ($5.4 billion) on a #manufacturing plant for #chips and packaging in #Catania, #Italy in a multi-year project that’s being partly funded by the #EuropeanUnion's #ChipsAct. The Italian government, within the Chips Act framework, will give STMicro €2 billion in #subsidies, the company said in a statementon Friday. The plant, which will specialize in silicon-carbide manufacturing as well as testing and packaging, will start production in 2026 and targets hitting full capacity by 2033, it said. Each year, the government compensated them for exactly the amount of that loss. The government did this because they - like many other people in Europe - thought that semiconductors would always lose money. You must do them because they support critical things like nuclear weapons and other strategic industries. But don't expect to make money from it. In an atomic bomb, who cares if a transistor costs one dollar or a thousand dollars? So just make the best darn transistor you can make, and forget about the cost. So volumes cratered, product lines expanded, and costs rose. This arrangement made sure that everyone stayed employed - not unimportant in Italy those days with its leftist bent - and some high quality products got made. But it also left the company in limbo. They were perfectly satisfied to sell small numbers of chips solely into Europe - itself a declining semiconductor market. .... In 1979, the company hired a new CEO - Pasquale Pistorio. .... Over many years, he worked his way up to be vice president of Motorola's international semiconductor division and the most senior non-American in the world's second largest semiconductor company. The SGS job offered a 40% pay cut and required him to take an armored car thanks to terrorists. But Pistorio embraced the professional challenge of turning around what he called a "basically broken" company that still held national importance to his home country.
