ZF's Exit from $3B Wolfspeed Project Highlights Challenges in EU Chip Manufacturing ZF Friedrichshafen AG has announced plans to exit its $3 billion joint project with Wolfspeed, initially aimed at creating the world’s largest 8-inch silicon carbide (SiC) chip plant in Germany. Industry sources attribute ZF’s decision to Wolfspeed's financial hurdles, ongoing construction delays, and the absence of expected subsidies from the EU. In early 2023, Wolfspeed and ZF unveiled plans to co-invest in a cutting-edge SiC facility in Saarland, with ZF initially pledging $185 million. However, construction has been pushed to mid-2025, two years behind schedule. Wolfspeed cited the sluggish EV market in both Europe and the U.S. as a factor for reprioritizing funds towards its U.S. facilities. While the U.S. CHIPS Act has provided Wolfspeed with up to $750 million for domestic expansions, the EU Chips Act has yet to deliver promised funding. Other companies, like Intel, Infineon, and onsemi, are facing similar delays in subsidy approvals for their European projects.
