Welcome to England! 😬 I recently came across a map illustrating Europe’s wine production landscape by 2050, and the outlook is grim. Iconic regions like Bordeaux, Douro, and Chianti may cease to exist as we know them due to global warming. 🍷🍷🍷 According to a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (https://lnkd.in/ewtHQkAK), temperatures in these regions could increase by 2°C to 6°C by 2050, making them unsuitable for traditional wine grapes. ☀️ Using the IRO (Impact, Risk, Opportunities) framework established by the European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), here’s a quick analysis of global warming's effects on wine production: 🔥Impact: Higher temperatures mean increased water requirements and weather instability, leading to intense rain periods alternating with drought. In France, agriculture accounts for 80% of total water demand during the summer. Consequently, water restrictions may prioritize residential use over agriculture, as seen in recent years. 🔥Risk: From a wine producer's perspective, risks include: 🧨Higher insurance premiums (source: https://lnkd.in/e3ABMjzH) 🧨Increased water costs 🧨Phased-out production 🧨Decreasing property values 🔥Opportunities: While it's challenging to find positive outcomes, some larger wine groups are already investing in new vineyards in Northern Europe, including England. Can money buy happiness ? I don’t think so, but it can help big time… 🙄   As some of you following Koaloo.Fi may have noticed, we are convinced that Finance will play a major role in supporting companies AND their suppliers in achieving their ESG goals. 💪 Here’s a quick update of the first movers: ·      Asda: The UK food group has implemented a programme to collect emissions data from suppliers and incentivize them to reduce emissions. This initiative is part of their broader ESG strategy, aiming to improve their Scope 3 emissions. ·      Cemex: The Mexican multinational cement group has rolled out a sustainable-linked financing programme. By 2030, Cemex aims to link 85% of its debt to sustainability. The programme allows certified suppliers to access discounted financing, supporting their ESG goals. ·      Mr Price Group: The South African retailer launched a supply chain finance programme in 2021, covering 1,047 suppliers in 29 countries. This programme is facilitated by Addendum, Africa's largest supply chain finance provider, and is part of their effort to enhance ESG performance in their supply chain. ·      Dowlais Group plc: The UK auto engineering group has transformed its financial processes by introducing supply chain finance alongside new cash management and treasury management solutions. This transformation supports their ESG objectives by improving supplier relationships and sustainability. ·      Allegro: Poland's online retailer has implemented embedded receivable finance, which has driven sales growth by offering extended terms to thousands of customers. 🌍 Sustainability: Are CFOs ready? 🌍 The latest EY Global Corporate Reporting Survey reveals significant challenges in sustainability reporting. Let’s see what numbers (and EY) are telling us…   What’s the core concern for investors and CFOs? 🤔 Simply put: a lack of data integrity. A staggering 96% of finance leaders report issues with nonfinancial data accuracy, i.e. inconsistent, incomplete, and unclear data. Nevertheless, sustainability continues to become a key driver of corporate value. If a company cannot credibly demonstrate its ability to anticipate/manage near-term and future challenges & opportunities, how can investors trust that the company will survive? Quite simply, in the eyes of investors, by failing to prepare, companies are preparing to fail.  Nearly 70% of CFOs admit that investors are asking way more questions about ESG. 🌳 Soutenir nos agriculteurs : un enjeu crucial & ESG🌳 J’ai eu le plaisir de corédiger avec Jean-Claude Beaujour un article mettant en avant pourquoi et comment nous pouvons aider nos agriculteurs. Ce secteur représente 42 000 emplois au sein de ma région, l'Auvergne. Cela peut sembler peu (1,2% de notre PIB régional), mais est au cœur de la vie de notre région. Ce n'est pas un simple secteur : nous comptons tous un agriculteur au sein de notre famille. Et pourtant, leur travail, dévouement et défis sont souvent mal compris. Les agriculteurs français sont en effet au cœur de notre souveraineté alimentaire, mais ils font face à des défis majeurs. 🌍 Are US elections heralding ESG's decline? 📈 Guess what: ESG disclosure is not only holding steady but growing in the US! 🫠 A recent Thomson Reuters article highlights that companies are boosting their social and climate reporting, bucking the trend of ESG backlash. This is a testament to the power of collective determination and the business case for sustainability. 🎃 Morgan Stanley updates its Financed Emissions Targets: good news for the planet? 🎃 🤔 Morgan Stanley has introduced a new range-based approach to its financed emissions reduction targets, reflecting the current global misalignment with the 1.5°C climate goal. Essentially, that means that they are abandoning their previous targets for being too ambitious, considering the slower progress made by some of their own clients. 🙄   Is it good for the planet❓ The above announcement may unfortunately herald many other similar announcements from banks and some of the key corporate sectors mentioned hereabove. 95% of banks’ GHG emissions come from their clients indeed. Their decision simply confirms that we are not progressing fast enough, hence this is bad news for the planet and ourselves. According to Swiss Re, without adaptation, global GDP at risk from climate change could reach $23.5 trillion by 2050. 🫢 The immediate questions are then: ·      Who is to pay? Insurance companies are already increasing their premiums by 30% in some high-risk regions. States are contributing to the fixes. Bottom-line: we shall all pay more through taxes and other contributions. ·      Who is coordinating everyone's efforts? No one. COPs are a great initiative, but their decisions are non-binding. Free-rider States, companies and individuals are still legion as a result, while consequences are global. ·      How can we do better? The first step to making sure there are no free riders. It is also the first step to establish individual/collective plans to address climate change and our social impact. There is also the question of the key role of finance in nudging clients towards net-zero through a carrot/stick approach. ·      Who needs help? Supply chains account for 90% of our total corporate impact. Allocating materially cheaper financing to them to support their own ESG transformation/investments is all the more important as their access to funding remains limited and expensive. Funding premiums can be as large as 4% in Europe indeed, whether you’re well rated or not. 😬   Ensuring data transparency across supply chains and “fueling” SMEs/suppliers ESG investments is our mission at Koaloo.Fi.
