What a great experience speaking at the Nordic Data Science and Machine Learning Summit 2024! 🙌 I had the opportunity to present on “Data Platforms - Generating Value from Analytical Data at Scale”, diving into how an opinionated data platform can help organizations build and operate data flywheels to unlock real business value. 🔄 The questions and discussions—both during the Q&A and later during the break—were insightful and showed how much we all care about tackling data engineering challenges together. 💡If you were there and didn’t get the chance to ask questions or discuss the topic, don’t hesitate to connect and DM. Have you realised that some of the least trusted media are some of the most consumed ones? Trust in media brands does not correlate with usage but this new study from Schibsted shows how trust can be leveraged as a key asset by media companies. For example, as a key trigger to pay a subscription. The study unveiled credibiility of the process as one of the key drivers of trust. This is the aspect journalists tend to focus. However, from the audience-centric perspective of the study, other three key drivers emerged: - Credibility of the content in itself. - The perceived personal relevance and usefulness of the content. - Selectivity, i.e., what facts, events, and topics that are covered and what is left out. Having worked on this topic in the past, I believe this study helps to advance our knowledge on the topic so 👏 .

Finnish #gameindustry is at its worst economical point, and we need to have a reality check on the causes that has driven us here - this is important if we would want to achieve the vision Ilkka Paananen called out along with Suomen startup-yhteisö. 1. Lack of commercial sentiment & #leadership - after 2016-2018, the industry were left behind vs. how foreign businesses evolved: - Studios have been too creative-driven & relaxed. - IP & brand syndromes, e.g., many haven't created new hits since their 1st nor been able to create new IPs / brands. - Missed completely #hypercasual wave & its learnings; and, because of this, came late to #hybridcasual. - Many don't know how to publish & distribute games. Many early stage studios leaned on publishers, whilst after #IDFA there's a clear gap between how foreign studios distribute games vs. our studios approach it. - Finland had #F2P is 'bad' sentiment within devs., showcasing immaturity, which was a thing during the golden era of F2P. - Not evolving when it was necessary or following shifts on best practices on e.g., #monetization on scale (if you look at e.g., Scopely, they really were heavy-lifting to became great on where they are today, whilst our biggest f2p player had to catch up years after on this). - #AAA, #PC & #Console releases with misses lately; with additional layers of having budgets getting out of control, QA done poorly, etc. 2. Not knowing how to own companies + issues with buyers after exits: - We have had #founders who knew how to build companies, whilst they exited early. Unfortunately, on many cases, the buyers have shut down the studios they bought. - Additionally, buyers & foreign studios who are still operating tend to let studios optimize comfort over #commercialization (correlating with 1). - #Games #millionaires not starting new companies. 3. Funding landscape: - #VCs shifting to invest abroad, resulting to gates for cash inflow to #Finland. - Games millionaires not participating on circulating cash back to the industry (e.g. security wins over games). If they have stakes on #funds, the problem stays same as long as above is valid. - Evergreen Finnish funds have shifted away from games. This includes successful funds who made it, but don't believe they will see new Supercell; thus they have shifted away as well. - Government #financing entities investing in wrong trends and shifts, on top of moving slowly around them. 4. #Politics, #education and #economical issues: - Highest taxation in the world, resulting also game millionaires moving out (correlates with 3). - Some education programs have been shut down. Some don't teach commercial side the right way. Some produce talent to wrong positions, resulting unemployment. - Work-based immigration regulation. - Etc. While I love working here, I'm calling out a reality check that everyone needs to do to uplift our industry. I'm doing my best to improve the industry & sentiment here, but we need everyone on this cause.

Impressions from MeasureCamp Copenhagen. Serverside tag management wasn't such a huge topic it was in MeasureCamp Helsinki. Maybe Finland is an even more engineering-oriented market than the rest of Europe. Many analytics people don't yet see AI and LLMs as useful for more than writing javascript and SQL. I think they are valuable tools for qualitative analysis and classifying historical data (Neil Callanan had an interesting talk about this topic). It also seems that people talk more about "alternative" analytics tools than actually use them. People are alt-curious but in practice, very few people have even tested tools like Piwik PRO or Matomo Analytics. On Friday, Brand Leadership Community and IIH Nordic organized a side event, which included an interesting discussion about how to lose one's credibility and influence as an analyst. Excellent tips!

THOUGHTS ON THE AI ACT PT. 1/2 🇪🇺|🚀 It’s become trendy to criticize EU’s AI Act. I almost daily see posts with memes comparing the EU’s infamous fixed bottle caps to SpaceX rockets, humanoid robots, or AI models delaying their EU launches. I get where the criticism comes from, but I believe: 1️⃣ The simplistic “regulation vs. innovation” dichotomy is misleading and hide our bigger underlying issues. 2️⃣ The theoretical argumentation ignore the very real consequences of AI. Here’s a summary of my first point from my recent Impact Loop column (warmly welcome additional views in comments): 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼 1️⃣Framing the AI debate as regulation vs. innovation is misleading: 📉That Europe has lost competitiveness in AI is undeniable. The popular explanation is that we’re losing the AI race because we love regulation more than we love innovation. But this framing only hides our deeper tech problems. A recent analysis of the AI value chain shows that the EU lacks leadership in almost all its critical parts. (McKinsey & Company: https://lnkd.in/dS-W3J5y) We have no substantial cloud or supercomputer provider, no critical chip design or manufacturing IP or components company(except our NL lithography wonder child ASML) and the list goes on. Believing that less regulation would solve these underlying technological challenges is naive. We have systematically underinvested for decades in the fundamental research and development that drives today’s AI revolution. While the U.S. invested $67 billion in private AI development last year, Europe only reached $11 billion. For generative AI, the gap is even larger. (Stanford University: https://lnkd.in/dcGWut3v) ⚠️Yes, the AI Act introduces real barriers—it will become harder to innovate in *high-risk* areas and increase the requirements for *foundation models*. With fines roughly 2x those of GDPR, developers of AI systems are demanding less ambiguity. American tech giants are already pausing and delaying their services in response. 👉🏼However, these represent only a very small fraction of all AI systems: the vast majority of our use cases are (and will be) *low-risk* and will NOT be hindered in any way by the new regulations. 🇪🇺Europe may not catch up in foundational AI infrastructure. But we can lead in human-centric AI—not despite our high standards, but because of them.
