Ensimmäisen kehittämishankkeen jälkeen yrityksen liikevaihto kaksinkertaistui. April 16th is Day of the Mushroom! Helsieni is a small mushroom farm and webstore in southern Finland. They grow primarily oyster mushrooms and sell do-it-yourself growkits to home growers and gardeners. The company was founded in 2016 in Helsinki and their name comes from this birthplace combined with the word ‘sieni’ which means mushroom in Finnish. They hope to inspire other people to start growing mushrooms for their local markets, so they share their knowledge through consulting and publish their own research on their website. They would like to see the consumption of mushrooms in Finland reach the levels of Asia, because the fungal kingdom is rich in species just as the plant and animal kingdoms are. Helsieni’s story and recipes are featured in my new book Islands in a Common Sea in a 288-page hardback and retails at £35. Greetings from the Southwest coast of Finland! This year we have harvested reed during wintertime: dryer winter reed works well e.g. for building roofs and for making straws. 🌾 Last week the harvest took place at Raasepori municipality, and was organized in co-operation with John Nurmisen Säätiö and the landowner. The harvested reed goes to the nearest farmer for soil improvement. The company Helsieni will also test it as a carbon friendly substrate for growing edible mushrooms. 🤝 Harvesting and utilizing reed is a shared benefit for landowners, harvesters, companies and the Baltic Sea: we get the nutrients bound to reedbeds recycled from eutrophicated coastal areas to beneficial use on land. 🌊 In Finland, our project's harvesting continues at the end of the summer. 📽 : Sonja Jaari #BalticReed #BalticSea #Itämeri #Östersjön #CircularEconomy #CentralBaltic

Their work in lab-grown coffee offers a sustainable and ethical alternative to traditional farming methods. - Preloved Coffee steps into the bioproduct sphere with their coffee oil, touting benefits for skin and hair care, marking its potential in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. - Nakup na Dobro offers on their e-shop durable cups made out of coffee grounds (produced by Kaffeeform). Pouring my morning coffee into a travel cup made from recycled grounds has been a small, yet profound, daily joy of mine. And there's more you can do right at home: - Use coffee grounds as natural fertilizer for your plants, enriching your garden with nutrients. - Coffee grounds can potentially deter slugs, keeping your greens safe without chemicals. - Create homemade peels or soaps, tapping into coffee's natural exfoliating properties. Why does this matter? Sustainability isn't just about the big gestures; it's in the everyday choices and the leftovers we find new uses for. Each of these projects represents a step towards a more sustainable lifestyle, driven by creativity and innovation.
