German company to build world's largest heat pump in Helsinki, in the city's next big move towards climate neutrality by 2030⚡️🔥 Starting in 2026, Helen Oy will use the world’s largest air-to-water heat pump from MAN Energy Solutions to decarbonise our heating infrastructure. Key highlights: 💡 The heat pump uses CO2 as a refrigerant – a more climate-friendly option than others currently being phased out by the EU. 💡 Paired with two 50 MW boilers, the system will ensure reliable heating in even the coldest temperatures (as low as -20°C) and cut 56 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. 💡We’re moving away from wood-burning, making our city’s energy cleaner and more sustainable. Finland has long been a leader in adopting heat pumps – nearly 1.5 million homes are already equipped with them. Now, with this massive investment, we’re setting a new standard for sustainable urban living. 🌱 Helsinki is showing the world what’s possible when innovation and sustainability come together. It feels weird, doesn't it? A week without daily 90 Day Finn events. As the intensive immersion of the program came to an end last Friday, we can't help but wish it could last forever. What an incredible final week filled with innovation, learning, and heartfelt moments we had. Here's a look back: 🚀 The week started at Nokia, a company that's been at the forefront of innovation for over 160 years. From rubber to telecommunications to drones, Nokia continues to reinvent itself, powering 35% of global internet connectivity and serving 6 billion users worldwide. We learned how they’re driving sustainability, building smart cities, and fostering ecosystem collaboration through strategic partnerships. As a long-time employee, shared, “29 years ago, I didn’t know I’d be selling drones!”. 👓 Next, we immersed ourselves in the world of extended reality with Varjo, whose cutting-edge XR products are helping train astronauts, pilots, nuclear power plant operators, and more. Their tech pushes boundaries with human-vision XR systems and industry-leading security. It was fascinating to see how companies are reducing physical infrastructure costs and moving design and training into virtual spaces. 🏛 With a 400-year legacy, the University of Helsinki ranks in the top 1% globally. We delved into the university's research and its Helsinki Incubators Program, which has raised €10M in just two years, turning groundbreaking research into real-world solutions. From AI and data sciences to climate sustainability, the university is shaping the future through innovation. 🎮 A day of hands-on XR experiences! The Helsinki XR Center is a vibrant hub connecting startups, industries, and investors. We explored how emerging technologies are fostering sustainable communities and had the chance to dive into various XR headsets and applications. Damon Hernandez, a 90 Day Finn alumni, shared his inspiring journey in Helsinki’s unique XR ecosystem. 🥂 We ended the week on a high note with breakfast at Helsingin kaupunki – Helsingfors stad – City of Helsinki alongside the mayor of Helsinki, who presented the 90 Day Finn certificates to the participants. The day culminated in a traditional crayfish party, filled with laughter, emotion, and grateful farewells. Hey, the program isn't over yet! A few participants are staying the full 90 days, to deepen new connections and further explore new business opportunities. And for some participants it only took 32 days to decide they want to stay in Helsinki for good 🎉 Stay tuned for the wrap-up video and first results of 90 Day Finn 2024. What a journey it’s been Chloe Straw, Diego Vazquez Lozano, Hiromi Yamada, Marina Barboza, Megumi Umeda, Parthvee Jain, Rajul Garg, Rodolphe Célestin, Sagar T., Staci LaToison, Thines Rao R., Veronika Marsland, Vincent Marsland, MBA 💫 #90DayFinn #WhyHelsinki #XR #Innovation #InnovationInHelsinki #HelsinkiPartners #BusinessExpansion 📸 Sakari Röyskö
