Welcome to the #BalticReed project page! 🌾 The project aims to improve the state of the Baltic Sea by long-term nutrient reductions from coastal waters with reed harvesting, and complements land-based measures by restoring coastal ecosystems. In collaboration with commercial stakeholders, the BalticReed project will analyze the main bottlenecks and opportunities for commercialization of reed-based value chains and products. The partners in the project are John Nurmisen Säätiö, ELY-keskus - Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment, Arcada University of Applied Sciences, Ålands Landskapsregering, Länsstyrelsen Östergötland and Race For The Baltic. The project is funded by the EU’s INTERREG Central Baltic programme, which finances cross-border cooperation projects to improve the state of coastal and marine environment. One month ago, our project manager Sonja Jaari from John Nurmisen Säätiö had the privilege of presenting the #BalticReed project at the inspiring APelago Initiative 2024 event in Kasnäs. 💡 The event brought together over 160 participants, all united by a shared mission: restoring the Baltic Sea. Attendees represented a diverse range of sectors, including public policymakers, innovators, startups, large corporations, research institutions, foundations, and investors — all eager to discuss how innovation and business can contribute to this important cause. 💡 We were thrilled to learn last week that out of the four promising startups supported by the A’pelago accelerator, two are utilizing reed as a raw material. It is exciting to note that the core philosophy of the BalticReed project aligns perfectly with the A'pelago Initiative: fostering collaboration between experts from various fields and providing a platform for knowledge exchange, open dialogue, and the development of sustainable business models. By doing so, we can drive meaningful change to help save the Baltic Sea. #APELAGOinitiative2024 #APelago #JohnNurminenFoundation #BalticReed Pictures by Aarón Blanco Tejedor | Ubuntu Productions

How to make nature conservation actions profitable, so that nature and companies can benefit from them? 🤔 That was one of the themes our project manager Maija Salmiovirta from John Nurmisen Säätiö and project coordinator Michelle Kozlova from Varsinais-Suomen ELY-keskus discussed about with a journalist from the local newspaper Satakunnan kansa at the city of Pori. Harvesting reed at Pori helps local coastal waters, and local bird populations benefit from it as well. Harvested reed goes to Biolan, a company that makes soil products from this sustainable material. 🌾 You can find the article here (in Finnish): https://lnkd.in/dvpby-wu 📸 : Sami Kivistö #BalticReed #CentralBalticProgramme #BalticSea

Thank you Sjöutsikt Sverige AB for highlighting the #BalticSeaDay by arranging a day full of innovation, creativity and positive energy. A mix of companies, municipalities, researchers, industry specialists, farmers and locals got to experience the entire production process of reed fodder - from cutting to baling. Reed is a versatile material and has many applications - horse fodder is one of them. Race For The Baltic is exploring all opportunities in this area in the #BalticReed project, parallell to the important research of SLU - Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. If you didn't have time to go yesterday, there is another chance on Sunday, September 1st, in Rydboholm.

Baltic Sea Day is coming - join the celebration on the 29th August 2024! 🌊 The Baltic Sea Day is an annual day of celebration in honour of the sea. The objective of the day is to encourage people to enjoy the unique sea that belongs to us all, and to take concrete actions that benefit the sea. In addition to the celebrations, the purpose of the Baltic Sea Day is to provide information on the versatile nature, culture, and history of the Sea. The day was launched by John Nurminen Foundation. 🌾 The Baltic Reed project is part of the celebration of the Baltic Sea! During the Baltic Sea Day, you can hear more about the Baltic Reed project at the ELY Centre for Southwest Finland's tent, near the Forum Marinum Maritime Centre in Turku. Phosworks 💚 BalticReed On #BalticSeaDay Phosworks will dedicate their kick-off to focus on something they're particularly passionate about – the climate. Their whole team will gather for a full day of brainstorming to come up with different communication ideas for the #BalticReed project. We are very exited to see the results! 💚

BalticReed reposted this
After thorough planning and preparations, we have finally begun this summer's reed harvest in the Roslagen and Stockholm archipelago! 🌾 👏 🌤 We have partnered with the Danish company STUBOGGREN.DK to carry out the harvest in Harg-Östhammar, Bogesund-Vaxholm, and Riddersholm-Norrtälje. Thanks to the engagement of landowners in the areas; HARGS BRUK AB, Statens fastighetsverk, and Skärgårdsstiftelsen, we have been able to identify coastal sites with abundant land-based reed. We aim to harvest 11-13 hectares in total, which removes approximately 5-10 kg of phosphorus and 50-100 kg of nitrogen per hectare. The harvest is conducted using a Softrack machine, renowned for its low ground impact and efficiency in wetland restoration projects. This machine simultaneously cuts and collects the reed, making the process cost-effective as it eliminates the need for a second pass to collect the cut reeds. The reed harvested in Harg, Bogesund and Riddersholm will be sent to Hasselfors Garden for evaluating reed as a sustainable alternative for soil improvement, potentially replacing peat in soil production. Meanwhile, as a continuation of last year's harvest, together with SLU - Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and Sjöutsikt Sverige AB we've harvest water-based reed in Harg for SLU's ongoing research on its use as animal feed. Stay tuned for more updates on our progress and the exciting developments in the EU Interreg BalticReed project and sustainable reed harvesting!
