Our Good Complaints Handling course is aimed at staff handling complaints at stage 1 of the Model Complaints Handling Procedure (MCHP) but would be useful for anyone involved in complaints handling looking to develop their knowledge. This is a is self-guided course online with interactive opportunities to test your knowledge throughout. It can be completed online in your own time and takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. PULSE CHECK !!🚨: In response to a shocking incident where two Filipino nurses were attacked during unrest in Sunderland, the Health Secretary has issued a firm warning: anyone who exhibits racism towards NHS staff will be turned away. The nurses, who were on their way to provide emergency cover, were understandably "terrified" by the attack. Wes Streeting has strongly condemned the "mindless thuggery" that has been spreading across Britain, especially following the recent Southport stabbings. Many of these hardworking individuals have fled poverty, female genital mutilation (FGM), and violence, seeking a safer life through legal immigration routes. Unfortunately, the promise of stable, hourly contracts has often turned into a nightmare, leaving them living in poverty. The care sector's reliance on migrant workers, compounded by ongoing recruitment challenges, has subjected these individuals to substandard working conditions. This not only jeopardises their welfare but also impacts the quality of care provided, raising serious concerns about potential modern slavery within the industry. A recent Guardian article shed light on the troubling fact that many unverified care providers have been rapidly granted licenses to sponsor migrant workers without thorough inspections by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). This has led to widespread criticism of the CQC for registering too many providers without adequately assessing local demand for additional services rather than just staff. This oversight has resulted in an oversaturated market, causing staff to frequently move between providers, increasing operational costs, and forcing some care facilities to close their doors. Additionally, recent government policy changes preventing the partners of sponsored workers from entering the UK have further exacerbated the staffing crisis. Established care providers with strong CQC ratings are now finding it increasingly difficult to secure the necessary sponsorship licenses to meet demand. These providers struggle to compete with others offering higher wages, often funded by the questionable practice of charging overseas workers for their visas, undermining the sector's integrity. Our company is committed to supporting these exploited migrant workers by offering fair employment opportunities and ensuring they receive the respect and compensation they deserve. We urge regulatory bodies to implement more stringent checks and balances to protect vulnerable workers and maintain high standards within the care industry.

Improving the support and guidance offered to victims of crime and major incidents was on the agenda this week as members continued further check and change of the Victims and Prisoners Bill. During report stage, the government accepted Lords proposals to require the compensation scheme for victims of the infected blood scandal to be established within three months of the bill becoming law.   Members also voted to agree changes on:    🟥 requiring a duty of candour for those operating across all public services during major incidents 🟥 ensuring that the personal data of a victim of crime is not used for immigration control purposes without their consent. Do we need to include agency/supply staff on the SCR? Yes. Schools are required to include agency and supply staff in the SCR. The agency/organisation providing the staff should supply the necessary information, but the school must record the vetting details in their own SCR.

The CQC have now moved onto a risk-based Single Assessment Framework. This means that the CQC are conducting inspections based on how risky a service is deemed to be. CQC determines the risk level for services in a variety of ways, including monitoring call activities. The CQC does not publicly share information regarding provider risk levels making it difficult for providers to plan for an inspection. Furthermore, all inspections are now unannounced, so providers are not given any time beforehand to prepare. We are sure you will agree that a CQC inspection has a huge effect on a healthcare business with a poor rating or enforcement action having serious detrimental consequences on patient and insurer confidence alike. “We were completely surprised by our CQC inspection. With no time to plan we were deeply hurt to receive our ‘inadequate’ rating with special measures applied to our service. We were losing £100,000 pcm of revenue until we met COMI. Within three months, we were re-inspected and our rating improved - we were able to re-commence surgical services thanks to COMI’s expert knowledge. 🚑 After fourteen years of Conservative rule, the #NHS is in serious trouble. Waiting lists are at an all-time high, public satisfaction at an all-time low, and life expectancy is falling. But Labour’s two flagship policies for restoring the NHS – increasing the number of medical appointments 🏥 and doubling the amount of CT and MRI scanners 🔍 – aren’t enough to bring it back to health, argued Professor Andrew Street. 🛠️ As well as sorting out the workforce crisis, the new government will also need to develop the NHS estate and infrastructure.
